The year 2015 witnessed the first direct observations of a transient gravitational-wave (GW) signal from binary black hole mergers by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (aLIGO) Collaboration with the Virgo Collaboration. The MAGIC two 17m diameter Cherenkov telescopes system joined since 2014 the vast collaboration of electromagnetic facilities for follow-up of gravitational wave alerts. During the 2015 LIGO-Virgo science run we set up the procedure for GW alerts follow-up and took data following the last GW alert. MAGIC results on the data analysis and prospects for the forthcoming run are presented.

To understand how complete our surveys of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars can be with the current generation of telescopes, we study images of M33, a galaxy with a nearly complete WR catalogue, and degrade them to investigate the detectability of WRs out to 30Mpc. We lose almost half of our sample at 4.2Mpc, and at 30Mpc we detect only those WRs in bright regions.

High-resolution, long-slit spectroscopic observations of two planetary nebulae, M1-32 and M3-15 are presented. The observations were obtained with the 2.1-m telescope at the OAN-SPM, and MES spectrograph. M1-32 shows wide wings on the base of its emission lines and M3-15 has two very faint high-velocity knots. To model both PNe we built a 3D model consisting in a jet interacting with an equatorially concentrated slow wind, emulating the presence of a dense torus, by using the hydrodynamical code Yguazú. The synthetic position-velocity (PV) diagrams obtained from our models reproduce well the observed PV diagrams.

A number of scenarios have been put forward to explain the origin of the chemical anomalies (and resulting complex colour-magnitude diagrams) observed in globular clusters (GCs), namely the AGB, Fast Rotating Massive Star, Very Massive Star, and Early Disc Accretion scenarios. We compare the predictions of these scenarios with a range of observations (including young massive clusters (YMCs), chemical patterns, and GC population properties) and find that all models are inconsistent with observations. In particular, YMCs do not show evidence for multiple epochs of star-formation and appear to be gas free by an age of ~ 3 Myr. Also, the chemical patterns displayed in GCs vary from one to the next in such a way that cannot be reproduced by standard nucleosynthetic yields. Finally, we show that the “mass budget problem” for the scenarios cannot be solved by invoking heavy cluster mass loss (i.e. that clusters were 10-100 times more massive at birth) as this solution makes basic predictions about the GC population that are inconsistent with observations. We conclude that none of the proposed scenarios can explain the multiple population phenomenon, hence alternative theories are needed.

Hyperaccreting disks around black holes are the engines that drive outflows and jets in gamma ray bursts (GRBs). The torus formed after the core collapse or a compact binary merger is composed of free nucleons, Helium, electron-positron pairs, and is cooled by neutrinos rather than photon emission. Hyperaccretion powers the ultra-relativistic jets, where the GRB prompt emission originates. The neutrons produced in the disk and also in the outflowing material are necessary for the production of heavier nuclei. We discuss here the observable consequences of nucleosynthesis and we also apply the scenario of hyperaccretion to the gravitational wave source, GW150914. Temporal coincidence reported by the Fermi satellite suggested that the black hole merger might be accompanied with a GRB. We propose that a collapsing massive star and a black hole in a close binary could lead to such event. Gravitational wave emission due to the merger of collapsed core and the companion black hole might then coincide with a weak GRB.

The physical processes taking place in massive stars during their life and death are highly dependent on the metallicity (Z) of their parent cloud. Observations of these stars in low-Z nearby galaxies are crucial to understand these processes. IC1613 is the nearest Local Group galaxy with ongoing star formation and O-abundance lower than the SMC, although UV spectroscopy suggests it is not so metal poor. We performed a spectral analysis of early B-type stars in the galaxy, obtaining physical parameters and abundances. Our results confirm the low O-abundance of IC1613.

Proper motions (PMs) are required to calculate accurate orbits of globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way (MW) halo. We present our HST program to create a PM database for 20 GCs at distances of RGC = 10–100 kpc. Targets are discussed along with PM measurement methods. We also describe how our PM results can be used for Gaia as an external check, and discuss the synergy between HST and Gaia as astrometric instruments in the coming years.

We present studies using different observational techniques, along different frequencies, aiming to resolve and investigate jets, outflows, as well as compact and innermost regions of asymmetric planetary nebulae (PNe) and objects in transition to PN. All the information gathered allow us to explore the kinematics and other important properties of the structures that play a crucial role in the shaping of complex PNe morphologies, in particular, we explore the role of disks/tori as collimating engine of extreme axisymmetric PNe.

We discuss constraints on the formation of multiple populations in globular clusters (GCs) imposed by their present-day kinematics (velocity dispersion and anisotropy) and spatial distribution. We argue that the observational evidence collected so far in the outer parts of clusters is generally consistent with an enriched population forming more centrally concentrated compared to the primordial population, in agreement with all the scenarios proposed to date (in some cases by design), but not sufficient to favour a particular scenario. We highlight that the differential rotation of subpopulations is a signature that may provide crucial new constraints and allow us to distinguish between various scenarios. Finally, we discuss the spatial distribution of subpopulations in the central regions of GCs and speculate that mass segregation between subpopulations may be due to a difference in their binary fraction.

HDUST is a 3D, NLTE radiative transfer code based on the Monte Carlo method. We report on recent advancements on the code, which is now capable of handling He and other elements in the NLTE regime and in 3D configurations. In this contribution we show initial comparisons with CMFGEN, made with spherical wind models composed of H + He.

We have investigated the chemo-dynamical evolution of a Milky Way-like disk galaxy, AqC4, produced by a cosmological simulation integrating a sub-resolution ISM model. We evidence a global inside-out and upside-down disk evolution, that is consistent with a scenario where the “thin disk” stars are formed from the accreted gas close to the galactic plane, while the older “thick disk” stars are originated in situ at higher heights. Also, the bar appears the most effective heating mechanism in the inner disk. Finally, no significant metallicity-rotation correlation has been observed, in spite of the presence of a negative [Fe/H] radial gradient.

The first gravitational wave transient GW150914 was observed by Advanced LIGO on September 14th, 2015 at 09:50:45 Universal Time. In addition to follow-up electromagnetic observations, the detection of neutrinos will probe deeply and more on the nature of astrophysical sources, especially in the ultra-high energy regime. Neutrinos in the EeV energy range were searched in data collected at the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory within ± 500 s and 1 day after the GW150914 event. No neutrino candidates were found. Based on this non-observation, we derive the first and only neutrino fluence upper limit at EeV energies for this event at 90% CL, and report constraints on existence of accretion disk around mergers.

EUV and X-ray radiation emitted from wind-embedded shocks can affect the ionization balance in the outer atmospheres of massive stars, and can also be the mechanism responsible for producing highly ionized atoms detected in the wind UV spectra. To investigate these processes, we implemented the emission from wind-embedded shocks and related physics into our atmosphere/spectrum synthesis code FASTWIND. We also account for the high energy absorption of the cool wind, by adding important K-shell opacities. Various tests justfying our approach have been described by Carneiro+(2016, A&A 590, A88).

In particular, we studied the impact of X-ray emission on the ionization balance of important elements. In almost all the cases, the lower ionization stages (O iv, N iv, P v) are depleted and the higher stages (N v, O v, O vi) become enhanced. Moreover, also He lines (in particular He ii 1640 and He ii 4686) can be affected as well.

Finally, we carried out an extensive discussion of the high-energy mass absorption coefficient, κν, regarding its spatial variation and dependence on Teff. We found that (i) the approximation of a radially constant κν can be justified for r ⩾ 1.2R* and λ ⩽ 18 Å, and also for many models at longer wavelengths. (ii) In order to estimate the actual value of this quantity, however, the He ii background needs to be considered from detailed modeling.

Globular clusters (GCs) have multiple stellar populations, which show star-to-star abundance variations and multiple sequences (or spreads) in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. It is explained by multiple generations of star-formation in GCs. However, the observed evidence of ongoing star-formation was not found within any clusters. Here we present a binary interactions scenario for the formation of multiple stellar populations in GCs, where GC stars were born in a single burst of star formation, but some of them are members of binary systems. Binary interactions can produce peculiar stars, e.g. the merged stars and the accretor stars. They are more massive than normal single stars in the same evolutionary stage, and they are rapidly rotating stars at the moment of their formation. Rotationally induced mixing can cause the variations of their surface chemical composition. This results in the single-generation GCs showing abundance anomalies.

Recently, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has detected the gravitational wave (GW) event, GW150914, as a result of the merger of a ~30 M⊙ black hole (BH) binary. So far, the merger of stellar-mass BHs has been thought to result from the evolution of binary stars. Here, we propose a novel path of the merger stemming from non-binary isolated stars. In our previous studies, we have found that multiple non-binary stellar-mass BHs whose separations are larger than 1000 AU can merge with each other under the gas-rich environments through the gas dynamical friction and three-body interaction. In this case, a considerable amount of gas can accrete onto BHs before the merger, that is, the initial mass of BHs can be lower than 30 M⊙. To explore this possibility, we perform post-Newtonian N-body simulations on mergers of accreting stellar-mass BHs. Based on our simulations, we find that the BH merger in GW150914 from smaller seed BHs is likely to occur in galactic nuclear regions or dense interstellar cloud cores. Furthermore, we roughly estimate event rates to be ~0.4 yr−1 in galactic nuclear regions and ~8 yr−1 in dense interstellar cloud cores.

TW Hydrae is a very young and nearby association with about 30 known members which is an excellent target for studies on stellar evolution since several of its members present a particular interest (planetary system, brown dwarfs, etc.). With the new data from TGAS and the Gaia DR1 eventually combined with others astrometric data we intend to improve our kinematic knowledge of this association.

To understand mass loss history and mass loss and dust formation history of massive AGB stars, we carried out observations of three bipolar planetary nebulae (BPNe) in 30 micron bands from a ground-based telescope. All of our targets have a compact strong emission source in the mid-infrared (MIR) around the position of the central star of planetary nebula (CSPN). These detected emissions can be originated from cool dust. Our results show that the cool dust component is compactly distributed and much more massive than previous studies indicated. These findings suggest that they experienced a strong mass loss into the equatorial direction in past.

Binary black holes as the recently detected sources of gravitational waves can be formed from massive stellar binaries in the field or by dynamical interactions in clusters of high stellar density, if the black holes are the remnants of massive stars that collapsed without natal kicks that would disrupt the binary system or eject the black holes from the cluster before binary black hole formation. Here are summarized and discussed the kinematics in three dimensions of space of five Galactic black hole X-ray binaries. For Cygnus X-1 and GRS 1915+105 it is found that the black holes of ~15 M⊙ and ~10 M⊙ in these sources were formed in situ, without energetic kicks. These observations suggest that binary black holes with components of ~10 M⊙ may have been prolifically produced in the universe.

Nearby galaxies are ideal objects for the study of the mechanisms of galaxy formation and evolution, and massive stars in nearby galaxies are useful sources to investigate the structures and formation of the galaxies. It is important to gather the contents of massive stars for a number of galaxies spanning various metallicities. We focus on the red supergiants (RSGs) in nearby galaxies NGC 4449, NGC 5055, and NGC 5457, and the photometric properties of RSGs of three galaxies were investigated using near-infrared (JHK) imaging data obtained from WFCAM UKIRT. The (J − K, K)0 CMDs are investigated and compared with theoretical isochrones (Figure 1). The majority of RSGs in three galaxies have common age ranges from log(tyr) = 6.9 to log(tyr) = 7.3, and this indicates that these galaxies have experienced recent star formation within 20 Myr. Spatial correlation of RSGs with H II regions and their colour distribution were also investigated. For NGC 4449 and NGC 5457, the RSGs are spatially correlated with the H II regions, which however is not the case for NGC 5055. We found a similar colour distribution and a constant peak magnitude of MK = −11.9 for the RSGs in the three galaxies.

Recent spectroscopic and photometric surveys of Galactic Globular Clusters have shown that these stellar systems host distinct sub-populations of stars characterised by peculiar chemical patterns. In the following we wish to address the issue of how these specific chemical patterns affect both the structural and evolutionary properties of stars as well as their spectral energy distribution. The implications of these effects on the photometric appearance of multiple stellar populations in different photometric planes are also briefly discussed.
