The nearby (d = 19.7 Mpc) Seyfert galaxy NGC 3079 exhibits a prominent bubble emerging from the nucleus. In order to investigate the nuclear power source, we carried out ammonia observations toward the center of NGC 3079 with the Tsukuba 32-m telescope and the JVLA. The NH3 (J,K) = (1, 1) through (6, 6) lines were detected in absorption at the center of NGC 3079 with the JVLA, although the profile of NH3 (3, 3) was in emission in contrast to the other transitions. All ammonia absorption lines have two distinct velocity components: one is at the systemic velocity (Vsys ~ 1116 km s−1) and the other is blueshifted (Vsys ~ 1020 km s−1), and both components are aligned along the nuclear jets. The blueshifted NH3 (3, 3) emission can be regarded as ammonia masers associated with shocks by strong winds probably from newly formed massive stars or supernova explosions in the nuclear megamaser disk. The derived rotational temperature, Trot = 120 ± 12 K for the systemic component and Trot = 157 ± 19 K for the blueshifted component, and fractional abundance of NH3 relative to molecular hydrogen H2 are higher than those in other galaxies reported. The high temperature environment at the center may be mainly attributed to heating by the nuclear jets.

We studied molecular gas properties in a sample of 98 Hi - flux selected spiral galaxies within ~ 25 Mpc using the CO J = 3 − 2 line, observed with the JCMT, and subdivided into isolated, group, and Virgo subsamples. We find a larger mean H2 mass in the Virgo galaxies compared to group galaxies, despite their lower mean Hi mass. Combining our data with complementary Hα star formation rate measurements, Virgo galaxies have a longer molecular gas depletion times compared to group galaxies, perhaps due to heating processes in the cluster environment or differences in the turbulent pressure.

The host galaxies of nearby (z<0.3) core-collapse supernovae and long-duration gamma-ray bursts offer an excellent means of probing the environments and populations that produce these events' varied massive progenitors. These same young stellar progenitors make LGRBs and SNe valuable and potentially powerful tracers of star formation, metallicity, the IMF, and the end phases of stellar evolution. However, properly utilizing these progenitors as tools requires a thorough understanding of their formation and, consequently, the physical properties of their parent host environments. In this talk I will review some of the recent work on LGRB and SN hosts with resolved environments that allows us to probe the precise explosion sites and surrounding environments of these events in incredible detail.

The current photometric datasets, that span decades, allow for studying long-term cycles on active stars. Complementary Ca H&K observations give information also on the cycles of normal solar-like stars, which have significantly smaller, and less easily detectable, spots. In the recent years, high precision space-based observations, for example from the Kepler satellite, have allowed also to study the sunspot-like spot sizes in other stars. Here I review what is known about the properties of the cyclic stellar activity in other stars than our Sun.

Understanding the internal structure and spatial distribution of cosmic voids is crucial when considering them as probes of cosmology. We present recent advances in modeling void density- and velocity-profiles in real space, as well as void two-point statistics in redshift space, by examining voids identified via the watershed transform in state-of-the-art ΛCDM n-body simulations and mock galaxy catalogs. The simple and universal characteristics that emerge from these statistics indicate the self-similarity of large-scale structure and suggest cosmic voids to be among the most pristine objects to consider for future studies on the nature of dark energy, dark matter and modified gravity.

The origin of thick disks is still a matter of debate. To explore such structures in unprecedented detail, we have developed a technique to reach a surface brightness limit of 28.5-29 mag/arcsec2 with the combined g, r, i bands images from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project (Fliri & Trujillo, 2016). We present the characterisation of the thick disk in the edge-on galaxy UGC 01040. We carefully analyse the background subtraction and masking process. The effects of the PSF are considered through galaxy modelling. We present the study of radial and vertical surface brightness profiles, making a comparison between our data, the convolved and deconvolved models and its galactic components. We find that PSF effects are important, but can be accounted for. Our technique will allow us to model thick disks in external galaxies and elucidate their formation and evolutionary history.

The Planck satellite has provided an unprecedented view of the submm sky, allowing us to search for the dust emission of Galactic cold sources. Combining Planck-HFI all-sky maps in the high frequency channels with the IRAS map at 100um, we built the Planck catalogue of Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCC, Planck 2015 results. XXVIII), counting 13188 sources distributed over the whole sky, and following mainly the Galactic structures at low and intermediate latitudes. This is the first all-sky catalogue of Galactic cold sources obtained with a single instrument at this resolution and sensitivity, which opens a new window on star-formation processes in our Galaxy.

In Sun-like stars, magnetic fields are generated in the outer convective layers. They shape the stellar environment, from the photosphere to planetary orbits. Studying the large-scale magnetic field of those stars enlightens our understanding of the field properties and gives us observational constraints for field generation dynamo models. It also sheds light on how “normal” the Sun is among Sun-like stars. In this contribution, I will review the field properties of Sun-like stars, focusing on solar twins and planet hosting stars. I will discuss the observed large-scale magnetic cycles, compare them to stellar activity cycles, and link that to what we know about the Sun. I will also discuss the effect of large-scale stellar fields on exoplanets, exoplanetary emissions (e.g. radio), and habitability.

SITELLE is the new imaging Fourier transform spectrograph of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It produces an impressive 4 million spectra in a single datacube in selected bandpasses from 350 to 900 nm. Its large FOV (11′x11′) and its high spatial sampling (0.32′′/pixel, seeing limited) allow us to study extended objects with an unprecedented view (Drissen et al. 2014). SITELLE’s first observations of nearby galaxies revealed its capabilities to conduct detailed studies of emission line regions.

We discuss the universality and self-similarity of void density profiles, for voids in realistic mock luminous red galaxy (LRG) catalogues from the Jubilee simulation, as well as in void catalogues constructed from the SDSS LRG and Main Galaxy samples. Voids are identified using a modified version of the ZOBOV watershed transform algorithm, with additional selection cuts. We find that voids in simulation are self-similar, meaning that their average rescaled profile does not depend on the void size, or – within the range of the simulated catalogue – on the redshift. Comparison of the profiles obtained from simulated and real voids shows an excellent match. The profiles of real voids also show a universal behaviour over a wide range of galaxy luminosities, number densities and redshifts. This points to a fundamental property of the voids found by the watershed algorithm, which can be exploited in future studies of voids.

Stripped-envelope supernovae (SNe), i.e., those of Type Ib, Ic, and IIb, arise from massive progenitor stars which have had most or all of their outer hydrogen-rich layers removed before explosion by some process, either through a strong stellar wind or through binary mass transfer. The connection between some long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and broad-lined Type Ic SNe makes a broader discussion of stripped-envelope SNe and their environments particularly relevant. If the SN progenitor itself cannot be directly identified, it is possible that examination of its immediate environment can provide some insight into the nature of the progenitor. It is also possible that revisiting the SN site sufficiently late enough after explosion could reveal the presence of a binary companion. I will present high-spatial-resolution observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope of the sites and environments of stripped-envelope supernovae, and I will discuss the implications of the resulting analysis. I will include here, e.g., the environments of the recent SN 2011dh, SN 2012au, SN 2013df, SN 2013dk, and iPTF13bvn.

We present the 12CO J=1–0, 13CO J=1–0, and C18O J=1–0 maps of the M17 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) obtained as a part of the Nobeyama 45m CO Galactic Plane Survey. The observations cover the entire area of M17 SW and M17 N clouds at an angular resolution of ~ 15″ which corresponds to ~ 0.15 pc. We found that the N cloud consists of a couple of twisted filaments, they are extended in parallel toward the Hii region. The typicall width of the filaments is ~0.5 pc in 13CO intensity map. Most of young stellar objects (YSOs) are located on the filaments which have a bright rim structure in 8μm at the filament edge facing the Hii region. Furthermore, the time scale of the YSOs formation on the bright rim is comparable with that of NGC 6618 cluster which provides UV photons for the region. This fact indicates that the cluster triggered to form YSOs in N cloud. We also investigated the geometry of the Hii region and GMCs by comparing spatial distribution of 12CO velocity channel map and infrared dark cloud, and then found that NGC 6618 is possibly formed by the cloud cloud colision.

Recent theoretical and observational works claim the existence of galaxies with a characteristic age profile consisting on a negative radial trend followed by a smooth age upturn in its outskirts (“U-shape”). This shape has been generally related to down-bending light distributions; however, the existence of a real link between observed Surface Brightness (SB) profiles and changes in stellar properties such as age is still unclear.

The joint variability of chromospheric emission with the integrated flux in the Kepler visible band for the Sun as a star is examined. No correlation between our Ca II K line parameter and the Kepler passband is seen, suggesting that visible-band variability in solar-like stars is mostly independent of solar-like chromospheric activity. However, the K-line parameter time series and the total solar flux in the infrared K band appear weakly correlated, reflecting the wavelength dependence of the relationship between magnetic activity and broadband variability. We then apply a schematic, three-component model as a framework for the discussion of stellar photometric variability as observed by Kepler. The model confirms that spots tend to dominate stellar photometric variability in the visible though interesting cases do emerge where the facular disk coverage may become important in determining the amplitude of broadband variability.

Dessart et al., demonstrated that type II supernova (SN II) model spectra present increasing metal line strength with increasing progenitor metallicity. To confront these models with observations, we obtained a large sample of SN II host H ii region emission line spectroscopy. We show that inferred SN II host H ii region metallicities have a statistically significant correlation with the strength of SN II metal lines, specifically Fe ii 5018Å.

Modern surveys allow us to access to high quality large scale structure measurements. In this framework, cosmic voids appear as a new potential probe of Cosmology. We discuss the use of cosmic voids as standard spheres and their capacity to constrain new physics, dark energy and cosmological models. We introduce the Alcock-Paczyński test and its use with voids. We discuss the main difficulties in treating with cosmic voids: redshift-space distortions, the sparsity of data, and peculiar velocities. We present a method to reconstruct the spherical density profiles of void stacks in real space, without redshift-space distortions. We show its application to a toy model and a dark matter simulation; as well as a first application to reconstruct real cosmic void stacks density profiles in real space from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

We detected CO line and 1.2-mm continuum emission from the two GRB host galaxies (GRB 020819B and GRB 051022) by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). This is the first case for detecting molecular gas emission in GRB hosts. The ratio of molecular gas to dust mass of the GRB 020819B site is significantly lower than those of the Milky Way and nearby star-forming galaxies, suggesting that the star-forming environment where the GRB occur is different from those in local galaxies. The possible reason is that much of the dense gas is dissipated by a strong interstellar ultraviolet radiation field.

The massive exploitation of cosmic voids for precision cosmology in the upcoming dark energy experiments, requires a robust understanding of their internal structure, particularly of their density profile. We show that the void density profile is insensitive to the void radius both in a catalogue of observed voids and in voids from a large cosmological simulation. However, the observed and simulated voids display remarkably different profile shapes, with the former having much steeper profiles than the latter. We ascribe such difference to the dependence of the observed profiles on the galaxy sample used to trace the matter distribution. Samples including low-mass galaxies lead to shallower profiles with respect to the samples where only massive galaxies are used, as faint galaxies live closer to the void centre. We argue that galaxies are biased tracers when used to probe the matter distribution within voids.

Understanding the influence of solar variability on the Earth's climate requires knowledge of solar variability, solar-terrestrial interactions and observations, as well as mechanisms determining the response of the Earth's climate system. A summary of our current understanding from observational and modeling studies is presented with special focus on the “top-down” stratospheric UV and the “bottom-up” air-sea coupling mechanisms linking solar forcing and natural climate variability.
