Two topics concerning A-type stars are discussed: starspots associated with the strong magnetic fields and the prospects for asteroseismology. Considering starspots as analogous to sunspots is misleading. The photosphere of starspots of a magnetic A-star is higher than the normal photosphere, contrary to sunspots. As for the prospects of asteroseismology, it is demonstrated how well (or poorly) we can probe the internal structure of the distant stars using a limited number of p-mode frequencies. We performed a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the fullerene C60-containing planetary nebula (PN) Lin49 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Lin49 is a C-rich and metal-deficient PN (Z~0.0006) and its nebular abundances are in agreement with the AGB model for the initially 1.25 M⊙ stars with the metallicity Z = 0.001. By stellar absorption fitting with TLUSTY, we derived stellar abundances, effective temperature, and surface gravity. We constructed the photoionization model with CLOUDY in order to investigate physical conditions of Lin49. The model with the 0.005-0.1 μm radius graphite and a constant hydrogen density shell could not fit the ~1-5 μm spectral energy distribution (SED) owing to the strong near-IR excess. We propose that the near-IR excess indicates (1) the presence of extremely small carbon molecules or (2) the presence of high-density structure surrounding the central star.

SOLARNET is a medium size high resolution solar physics mission proposed to CNES and ESA for a new start in 2007 and a possible launch in 2012 (CNES) or later (ESA Cosmic Vision framework: 2015–2016). Partnerships with India and China are under discussion, and several European contributions are considered. At the center of the SOLARNET mission is a 3-telescope interferometer of 1 meter baseline capable to provide 40 times the best ever spatial resolution achieved in Space with previous, current or even planned solar missions: 20 mas - 20 km on the Sun in the FUV. The interferometer is associated to an on-axis Subtractive Double Monochromator coupled to an Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer capable of high spectral (0.01 nm) and high temporal resolutions (50 ms) on a field of view of 40 arcsec and covering the FUV and UV spectral domains (from 117.5 to 400 nm). This will allow to access process scales of magnetic reconnection, dissipation, emerging flux and much more, from the chromosphere to the low corona with emphasis on the transition zone where the magnetic confinement is expected to be maximum. A whole new chapter of the physics of solar magnetic field structuring, evolution and mapping from the photosphere to the high atmosphere will be opened. The interferometer is completed by instruments providing larger field of view and higher temperature (EUV-XUV coronal imaging & spectroscopy) to define the context and extension of the solar phenomena. The 3-telescope interferometer design results of an extensive laboratory demonstration program of interferometric imaging of extended objects. We will review the scientific program of SOLARNET, describe the interferometer concept and design, present the results of the breadboard and give a short overview of the mission aspects. In a different category, LAIME, the Lyman Alpha Imaging-Monitor Experiment, is a remarkably simple (no mechanisms) and compact full Sun imager to be flown with TESIS on the CORONAS-PHOTON mission in 2008. It could be the only chromospheric imager to be flown in the next years, supporting Solar-B, STEREO, SDO and the Belgian LYRA Lyman Alpha flux monitor. We will give a short description of this unique 60 mm aperture imaging telescope, dedicated to the investigation of the UV sources of solar variability and of the chromospheric and coronal disruptive events (Moreton waves, prominences, CMEs, etc.).

We report the first detection of OH emission at 1667 MHz from a planetary nebula, IC 4997 (Figure 1). OH emission in satellite line of 1612 MHz was detected already from planetary nebulae not only Vy 2-2 (Davis and Seaquist 1979), but also two IRAS objects which were distinguished from OH/IR stars as planetary nebulae (Pottasch et al 1987). OH observations of IC 4997 have been carried out with the large radio telescope at Nançay, France. Highly resolved optical emission lines were obtained at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Japan.

The advent of Fermi is changing our understanding on the radio and γ-ray emission in active galactic nuclei. Unlike pre-Fermi ideas, BL Lac objects are found to be the most abundant emitters in the γ-ray band. However, since they are relatively weak radio sources, most of their parsec-scale structure and their multifrequency properties are poorly understood and/or have not been investigated in a systematic fashion. Here we are analyzing the radio and γ-ray emission properties of a sample of 42 BL Lacs selected with no constraint on their radio and γ-ray emission. Thanks to new Very Long Baseline Array observations at 8 and 15 GHz for the whole sample, we discuss their parsec-scale structure. Parsec-scale radio emission is observed in the majority of the sources at both frequencies. The comparison between our results in radio and gamma-ray bands points out the presence of a large number of faint BL Lacs showing “non-classical” properties such as low source compactness, low core dominance, no gamma-ray emission.

Laboratory reconnection experiments dedicated to problems of space and astrophysics are briefly reviewed with the purpose of demonstrating that such experiments can provide important insights of considerable value to the development of reconnection theory. Moreover, many of these insights are of a kind not likely to be perceived either when working directly with space observations or while pursuing a course of pure theoretical reasoning without reference to laboratory results.

With relatively small black hole masses and high accretion rates, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies are thought to be young AGNs. About 7% of them are radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s). RLNLS1s allow us to re-address some of the key questions regarding the physics of jet formation. As the first step of the systematic study on the jet properties of RLNLS1s, we present the radio structure of fourteen RLNLS1s from VLBA observations at 5 GHz in 2013. Although all these sources are very radio-loud with R > 100, their jet properties are diverse, in terms of their pc-scale morphology and overall radio spectral shape. The core brightness temperatures of our sources are significantly lower than those of blazars, therefore, the beaming effect is generally not significant, compared to blazars. This implies that the bulk jet speed may likely be low in our sources.

Interpretation of current and future data calls for a continuous improvement in the theoretical modeling of CMB spectrum. We describe the new version of a numerical code, KYPRIX, specifically written to solve the Kompaneets equation in a cosmological context under general assumptions. We report on the equation formalism, and structure and computational aspects of the code. New physical options have been introduced in the current code version: the cosmological constant in the terms controlling the general expansion of the Universe, the relevant chemical abundances, and the ionization history, from recombination to cosmological reionization. We present some of fundamental tests we carried out to verify the accuracy, reliability, and performance of the code. All the tests demonstrate the reliability and versatility of the new code version and its accuracy and applicability to the scientific analysis of current CMB spectrum data and of much more precise measurements that will be available in the future.

In 2012, the International Astronomical Union (IAU), through its Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD), established the three Task Forces which drive global activities using astronomy as a tool to stimulate development. These Task Forces are: (i) Astronomy for Universities and Research; (ii) Astronomy for Children and Schools; and (iii) Astronomy for the Public.

Eastern Polynesian astronomy was practiced by navigators and astronomer-priests who were in charge of adjusting the lunar calendar and their annual ritual cycle of activities known as ‘The Work of the Gods’. The festivity known in Polynesia as Matariki, Matali'i or Matari'i was related to the heliacal and acronical rising and setting of the Pleiades. A study of 75 marae on the island of Raivavae, Austral Islands and of 7 marae in the island of Raiatea, Society Islands shows that there are alignments towards important star positions associated with this ritual cycle. Their use as observatories has not been documented and therefore these alignments could have served solely ritual purposes. On Easter Island all information regarding the Matariki festival coincides with the arrival of a Spanish expedition in 1770.

Since their discovery 50 years ago, neutron stars have continually astonished. From the first-discovered radio pulsars to the powerful “magnetars” that emit sudden bursts of X-rays and γ-rays, from the so-called Isolated Neutron Stars to Central Compact Objects, observational manifestations of neutron stars are surprisingly varied, with most properties totally unpredicted. The challenge is to cement an overarching physical theory of neutron stars and their birth properties that can explain this great diversity. Here I briefly survey the disparate neutron star classes, describe their properties, highlight recent results, and describe efforts at “grand unification” of this wealth of observational phenomena.

We review the interaction in intermediate and high mass stars between their evolution and magnetic and chemical properties. We describe the theory of Ap-star ‘fossil’ fields, before touching on the expected secular diffusive processes which give rise to evolution of the field. We then present recent results from a spectropolarimetric survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars, showing that magnetic fields of the kind seen on the main-sequence already exist during the pre-main sequence phase, in agreement with fossil field theory, and that the origin of the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars also lies early in the pre-main sequence evolution; we also present results confirming a lack of stars with fields below a few hundred gauss. We then seek which macroscopic motions compete with atomic diffusion in determining the surface abundances of AmFm stars. While turbulent transport and mass loss, in competition with atomic diffusion, are both able to explain observed surface abundances, the interior abundance distribution is different enough to potentially lead to a test using asterosismology. Finally we review progress on the turbulence-driving and mixing processes in stellar radiative zones.

New methods of local area helioseismology provide three-dimensional maps of sound-speed variations and mass flows in the upper convection zone, giving important insight into the internal structure and dynamics of sunspots and active regions. Most of these results are obtained from SOHO/MDI data using the method of time-distance helioseismology (or acoustic tomography). Robustness of this method has been significantly improved by incorporating most important wave propagation effects and stochastic properties of solar oscillations. Time-distance helioseismology reveals that developed sunspots have a two layer structure: a relatively thin sub-photospheric layer of lower sound speed, and a deeper layer of higher sound speed. The mass flows in the upper layer are typically converging and directed downward, while in the deeper interior the flows are mostly diverging. These results support the cluster model of sunspots suggested by Parker. New observations also provide interesting information about emerging magnetic flux, formation and evolution of active regions and complexes of activity, and allow us to investigate effects of sub-photospheric dynamics of active regions on the global circulation of the Sun and also small-scale rapid shear flows associated with flares and CME.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

The post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase is arguably one of the least understood phases of the evolution of low- and intermediate- mass stars. The recent post-AGB evolutionary sequences computed by Miller Bertolami (2016) are at least three to ten times faster than those previously published by Vassiliadis & Wood (1994) and Blöcker (1995) which have been used in a large number of studies. This is true for the whole mass and metallicity range. The new models are also ~0.1–0.3 dex brighter than the previous models with similar remnant masses. In this short article we comment on the main reasons behind these differences, and discuss possible implications for other studies of post-AGB stars or planetary nebulae.

We report the first systematic study of the supercluster-void network in the $\Lambda$CDM concordance cosmology treating voids and superclusters on an equal footing. We study the dark matter density field in real space smoothed with the $L_s = 5$ h−1Mpc Gaussian window. Superclusters and voids are defined as individual members of over-dense and under-dense excursion sets respectively. We determine the morphological properties of the cosmic web at a large number of dark matter density levels by computing Minkowski functionals for every supercluster and void. At the adopted smoothing scale individual superclusters totally occupy no more than about 5% of the total volume and contain no more than 20% of mass if the largest supercluster is excluded. Likewise, individual voids totally occupy no more than 14% of volume and contain no more than 4% of mass if the largest void is excluded. The genus of individual superclusters can be $\sim 5$ while the genus of individual voids reaches $\sim 55$, implying significant amount of substructure in superclusters and especially in voids. An important effort has been recently made to detect spectroscopically galaxies at z ~ 6 and higher where the cosmic reionization is thought to occur. The drop of the fraction of Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at z>6 is currently interpreted as an effect of the increasing neutral hydrogen density.

We present preliminary results from the latest VLT/FORS2 programs, combined with ESO archival data, to perform a large census of z ~ 6 galaxies. We derive their physical properties as stellar mass and dust attenuation with an SED fitting tool including nebular emission which is of primeval importance because IRAC channels are strongly contaminated by emission lines at those redshifts. We take a special care to derive with precision the redshift of non LAEs to perform a comparison of their properties with the LAE population and derive as accurately as possible the fraction of LAEs. In particular, we compare the UV beta slope with the Lyα equivalent width which are known to correlate at lower redshift.

We also report the detection of few peculiar z ~ 6 galaxies with extremely blue UV β slope (~−3), which can be a signature of unusual stellar populations (e.g., very hot and massive stars).

On the long road from dust to planets there are planetesimals. We review and criticize proposed mechanisms for planetesimal formation, and point out topics for future work.

Observations of radial velocities in the F-corona in the elongation range from 3 to 6 solar radii were carried out on July 11, 1991 (Mexico, La Paz) by means of a Fabry-Perot spectrograph. The Fraunhofer lines in the spectral region of H and K Call were used. The average velocities to the West and to the East of the Sun within 30° of the ecliptic plane are +30 km/s and -27 km/s respectively. This confirms the main results of the F-corona radial velocity observations by Shcheglov et al. (1987), Shestakova (1987) on July 31, 1981 about predominance of prograde Keplerian motion of the dust near the ecliptic plane and the effective radius of dust grains (≈0.4μm)

In HST Cycles 11 and 13 we obtained two epochs of ACS/HRC data for fields in the Magellanic Clouds centered on background quasars. We used these data to determine the proper motions of the LMC and SMC to better than 5% and 15% respectively. The results had a number of unexpected implications for the Milky Way-LMC-SMC system. The implied three-dimensional velocities were larger than previously believed and close to the escape velocity in a standard 1012 M⊙ Milky Way dark halo, implying that the Clouds may be on their first passage. Also, the relative velocity between the LMC and SMC was larger than expected, leaving open the possibility that the Clouds may not be bound to each other. To further verify and refine our results we requested an additional epoch of data in Cycle 16 which is being executed with WFPC2/PC due to the failure of ACS. We present the results of an ongoing analysis of these WFPC2 data which indicate good consistency with the two-epoch results.
