Abundance considerations suggest that comets are likely to be the most pristine minor bodies in the solar system. In proportion to solar abundances, the present scanty data suggest that cometary oxygen is not depleted, whereas carbon is by a factor of 4 and hydrogen, by a factor of 2000. This implies that comets are less depleted in H, C, N, O than CI chondrites, namely 10:1 in hydrogen, 4:1 in carbon and 3:1 in oxygen. These results have been obtained by using dust-to-gas ratios in comets, to measure the relative abundance of silicon and metals to volatile material, and the spectra of atomic lines, mainly from the vacuum ultraviolet, to determine the H/O and C/O ratios of the mixture of volatile molecules.

The recent VIIth Catalogue of Galactic Wolf-Rayet Stars (van der Hucht 2001), lists 227 Population I WR stars, comprising 127 WN, 87 WC, 10 WN/WC and 3 WO stars. Additional discoveries since then bring the census to ≳ 253 WR stars, including ≳ 27 WNL and 13 WCL stars within 50 pc of the Galactic Center. A re-determination of the optical photometric distances and the galactic distribution of WR stars shows in the solar neighbourhood (d < 3 kpc) a projected surface density of 2.7 WR stars per kpc2, a NWC/NWN number ratio of 1.3, and a WR binary frequency of 40%. Compared with other Local Group galaxies, the NWC/NWN number ratio in the solar neighborhood is a factor ~2 above the observed metallicity-dependent trend. This could imply that some 30 galactic WN stars in the d < 3 kpc volume are still hiding. Preliminary results of infrared photometric distance determinations are shown. The galactocentric distance (RWR) distribution per subtype shows RWN and RWC decreasing with later WN and WC subtypes. The observed trend is more indicative of WNE → WCE and WNL → WCL subtype evolution than of WNL → WNE and WCL → WCE subtype evolution.

The analysis of 66 years of concurrent latitude observations of the ILS shows that the mean pole has a secular motion which consists of a progressive component of about 0′′.0035/yr (10 cm/yr) along the meridian 65°W and a librational component (oscillation) of 24-year period along the meridian 122°W (or 58°E). Crustal displacements in latitude are not found within the errors of observation, about 1 cm/yr.

Comparable, concurrent observations for time (longitude) have not been made but programs are being organized. From 30 to 50 years will be needed for detection of continental drift with PZT's and astrolabes if relative drifts in longitude of 3 cm/yr are occurring.

Performance of the cross-correlation function (CCF) is compared with the linear, algebraic equations, least-squares deconvolution directly giving the broadening function (BF). The many disadvantages of the CCF do not outweigh its simplicity so that the BF approach is strongly advocated.

The Milky Way is the only galaxy for which we can resolve individual stars at all evolutionary phases, from the Galactic center to the outskirt. The last decade, thanks to the advent of near IR detectors and 8 meter class telescopes, has seen a great progress in the understanding of the Milky Way central region: the bulge. Here we review the most recent results regarding the bulge structure, age, kinematics and chemical composition. These results have profound implications for the formation and evolution of the Milky Way and of galaxies in general. This paper provides a summary on our current understanding of the Milky Way bulge, intended mainly for workers on other fields.

The existence of Maia variables has been in dispute since 1955. They are supposed to be located between the blue edge of the classical instability strip and the red border of the slowly pulsating B stars, hence in a domain of the HRD where no excitation mechanism for pulsation is yet known. But luminosity variations were discovered in time series of $\alpha$ Draconis, an A0III Maia candidate star, with a period of about 53 minutes and an amplitude of less than 0.002 mag. Spectroscopic time series indicate radial velocity variations with the same period and an amplitude of about $40{\rm m\,s}^{-1}$. Alpha Dra is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 51.4 days and a distance between the components of about 0.46 AU. Tidal interaction may therefore be responsible for pulsation. Machine-learning methods may be used to perform many tasks required in the analysis of astronomical data, including: data description and interpretation, pattern recognition, prediction, classification, compression, inference and many more. An intuitive and well-established approach to machine learning is the use of artificial neural networks (NNs), which consist of a group of interconnected nodes, each of which processes information that it receives and then passes this product on to other nodes via weighted connections. In particular, I discuss the first public release of the generic neural network training algorithm, called SkyNet, and demonstrate its application to astronomical problems focusing on its use in the BAMBI package for accelerated Bayesian inference in cosmology, and the identification of gamma-ray bursters. The SkyNet and BAMBI packages, which are fully parallelised using MPI, are available at http://www.mrao.cam.ac.uk/software/.

The INPOP ephemerides have undergone several improvements since the last INPOP10a release (Fienga et al. 2011). Improvements in the asteroid mass determinations have been made and the effect of the solar corona has also been investigated (Verma et al. 2012). Since 2010 and INPOP10a, in anticipation to IAU resolution B2, the au is fixed in the INPOP construction while the mass of the Sun is fitted. Descriptions of tests of general relativity made with INPOP10a are recalled here. Perspectives about Messenger data analysis and new gravity tests are finally introduced.

Organic compounds are ubiquitous in space: they are found in diffuse clouds, in the envelopes of evolved stars, in dense star-forming regions, in protoplanetary disks, in comets, on the surfaces of minor planets, and in meteorites and interplanetary dust particles. This brief overview summarizes the observational evidence for the types of organics found in these regions, with emphasis on recent developments. The Stardust sample-return mission provides the first opportunity to study primitive cometary material with sophisticated equipment on Earth. Similarities and differences between the types of compounds in different regions are discussed in the context of the processes that can modify them. The importance of laboratory astrophysics is emphasized.

Nulling interferometers such as Darwin or TPF will require a rather sophisticated data processing in order to perform a reliable planet detection and characterization. We propose a Bayesian method, which follows the maximum a posteriori (MAP) approach, to solve this problem. Our method accounts for the noise statistics and optimally combines the data from a nulling interferometer at all observed wavelengths to perform reliable planet detection. The problem to be solved is however multi-modal. We show how, in practice, the global optimum of the MAP criterion can be found by our method; the latter also provides the most likely spectral energy distributions of all planets. Additionally, we show that a proper regularization allows us to achieve an improved robustness of the detection and could lead to shorter observation times.

Given the advances in our understanding of the dynamical structure in the Kuiper Belt since 1990, this paper re-examines nomenclature issues regarding dynamical structures in the belt.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations can provide the positions of compact radio sources with an accuracy of order 50 micro-arcseconds. This is sufficient to measure the trigonometric parallax and proper motions of any object within 500 pc of the Sun to better than a few percent. Because they are magnetically active, young stars are often associated with compact radio emission detectable using VLBI techniques. Here we show how VLBI observations have already constrained the distance to the most often studied nearby regions of star formation (Taurus, Ophiuchus, Orion, etc.) and have started to provide information about their internal structure and kinematics. We will then briefly describe a large project, the ‘Gould's Belt Distances Survey,’ which has been designed to provide a detailed view of star formation in the solar neighborhood using VLBI observations.

Asteroids 3200 Phaethon and 196256 (2003 EH1) are connected with two major meteoroid streams, Geminids and Quadrantids, respectively. We have modeled the observed light curves and decelerations of Geminid and Quadrantid meteors and studied their spectra. In both cases, we have found typical bulk densities of about 2600 kg m−3, much larger than in cometary meteoroids. Sodium was partially lost from Geminids and Quadrantids due to solar heating. The Quadrantid material was therefore not hidden deep inside the parent body 1500 years ago, when the perihelion was low enough for sodium loss to occur.

To test General Relativity with the tracking data of the BepiColombo Mercury orbiter we need relativistic models for the orbits of Mercury and of the Earth, for the light-time and for all the spatio-temporal reference frames involved, with accuracy corresponding to the measurements: ≃10 cm in range, ≃2 micron/s in range-rate, over 2 years.

For the dynamics we start from the Lagrangian post-Newtonian (PN) formulation, using a relativistic equation for the solar system barycenter to avoid rank deficiency. In the determination of the PN parameters, the difficulty in disentangling the effects of β from the ones of the Sun's oblateness is confirmed. We have found a consistent formulation for the preferred frame effects, although the center of mass is not an integral. For the identification of strong equivalence principle (SEP) violations we use a formulation containing both direct and indirect effects (through the modified position of the Sun in a barycentric frame).

In the light-time equations, the Shapiro effect is modeled to PN order 1 but with an order 2 correction compatible with (Moyer 2003). The 1.5-PN order corrections containing the Sun's velocity are not relevant at the required level of accuracy.

To model the orbit of the probe, we use a mercury-centric reference frame with its own “Mercury Dynamic Time”: this is the largest and the only relativistic correction required, taking into account the major uncertainties introduced by non-gravitational perturbations.

A delicate issue is the compatibility of our solution with the ephemerides for the other planets, and for the Moon, which cannot be improved by the BepiColombo data alone. Conversely, we plan to later export the BepiColombo measurements, as normal points, to contribute with their unprecedented accuracy to the global improvement of the planetary ephemerides.

Stars in various parts of the HR diagram often have atmospheres in which the departure from the simplest kind of plane-parallel model is largely dominated by a single physical effect. For example, massive stars and giants exhibit symptoms of strong winds and lower Main Sequence stars are very strongly influenced by the presence of deep and energetic envelope convection. Main Sequence A stars, in contrast, appear to display the competing effects of several physical effects of comparable magnitude. The effects which can be detected by observation include large and relatively simple magnetic fields, strong surface convection, pulsation (often in multiple modes), diffusion of specific species under the competing influences of gravity and radiative acceleration, and (more indirectly) internal turbulent mixing, weak winds, and non-thermal heating. This situation makes these stars extremely useful as laboratories to explore and to understand the physics of these various phenomena, and how these effects interact with each other. We present and discuss carbon-rich compounds of astrochemical interest such as polyynes, acetylenic carbon chains and the related derivative known as monocyanopolyynes and dicyanopolyynes. Fullerenes are now known to be abundant in space, while fulleranes - the hydrogenated fullerenes - and other carbon-rich compounds such as very large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy petroleum fractions are suspected to be present in space. We review the synthesis, the infrared spectra as well as the electronic absorption spectra of these four classes of carbon-rich molecules. The existence or possible existence in space of the latter molecules is reported and discussed.

The past few years have seen the emergence of new observational approaches to the study of pulsating stars. Massive photometric surveys are discovering new variables by the tens of thousands. For example, the number of Cepheids and RR Lyrae has increased manifold over the past two years – many of these new distant pulsating stars have now better light curves than their well-known nearby counterparts. The new observational breakthrough has opened many theoretical issues. Some of these can be tackled with the set of new opacities (from Lawrence Livermore and from the Opacity Project), others seem to require new theoretical insights.

“Are results from ill-posed problems, like Doppler-imaging, conclusive at all?” and “Could polar spots be simple image-reconstruction artifacts?” are often asked questions. Although I can not definitively answer them, I will present observational evidence for the existence of cool starspots at or very near a stellar rotation pole.

Dynamical theories of the Earth’s rotation like SMART97 (Bretagnon et al., 1998) are to be considered in a DGRS (dynamically nonrotating geocentric reference system) (Brumberg et al., 1996). Such a theory gives the explicit expressions in terms of TCG (Geocentric Coordinate Time) of three Euler angles relating a DGRS to the ITRS (International Terrestrial Reference System). These angular quantities together with their TCG derivatives enable one to get all Earth’s rotation parameters. At the same time, the analysis of observations result in the values for slightly different angles and their TCG derivatives characterizing the relationship between the ITRS and a KGRS (kinematically nonrotating geocentric reference system). The differences between these two sets of six quantities represent kinematical relativistic corrections (due to geodesic precession, geodesic nutation and luni-planetary terms). The paper presents these differences computed by means of the VSOP87 series (Bretagnon and Francou, 1988). In particular, in analysing observations at the microarcsecond level these expressions will permit an experimental check of geodesic precession in a more direct manner than it is done nowadays (Bertotti et al., 1987).
