In the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1566 and quasars 3C 345, 3C 446 long term (∼ 103 days) variations have been observed. We propose to explain them as a limit cycle behaviour, similar to that well studied in the case of dwarf novae outbursts. The key element of our analysis is the relationship between the accretion rate · and the surface density Σ.

What have I learned about jets since the Albuquerque meeting (IAL) Symposium No.97) last summer?

There is where most of the gravitational energy is released, the funnels on the rotation axis of the accretion torus provide the right sort of geometry, and radiation is abundant. But the experts (Sikora & Wilson 1981 and references therein) never can make radiation-driven jets with Lorentz factor γ >> 1. Why? It is because, when an electron moves up through the funnel at a substantial fraction of the speed of light c, it sees as much radiation striking it trom the front as from behind; acceleration then stops. Large γ are attainable only if the source of radiation subtends an angle ≲ 1/γ behind the source.

The large-scale warps of disk galaxies remain a challenge for theorists. Recent speculations about their origins or longevity have tended to focus on the possible benefits of halos. After some remarks about modes, this review will do likewise. It will conclude that any applause even there can as yet be only scattered rather than thunderous.

Spontaneous and triggered star formation in the LMC is discussed with data on star clusters ages and positions. The supershell LMC4 and the stellar arcs in the same region are suggested to be triggered by GRBs, the progenitors of which might have escaped the old elliptical cluster NGC1978, close to which are a number of X-ray binaries and the SGR/SNR N49.

Using own and literature data for a large sample of O stars in the Milky Way, we investigate the correspondence between their spectroscopic and evolutionary masses, and try to put constraints on various parameters that might influence the estimates of these two quantities.

This review covers recent progress in observations of masers in regions of star formation, especially in the years since the reviews by Burke (1975) and Lequeux (1977). Four regions of special interest are described in more detail: Orion, W51, W49 and W3.

The hypothesis that density waves trigger star formation is critically examined. Much of the former evidence in favor of the hypothesis is shown to be inconsistent with modern observations. A comparison between galaxies with and without density waves reveals no significant difference in their star formation rates. A new role for density waves in the context of star formation might be based on four principles: 1. density waves are intrinsically strong, 2. the gas is compressed more than the stars in the wave, 3. star formation follows the gas, with no preferential trigger related to the wave itself, and 4. regions of star formation are larger in the spiral arms than they are between the arms. This new role for density waves is primarily one of organization: the waves place most of the gas in the arms, so most of the star formation is in the arms too. The waves also promote the coagulation of small clouds into large cloud complexes, or superclouds, by what appears to be a combination of collisional agglomeration and large-scale gravitational instabilities. Special regions where density waves do trigger a true excess of star formation are discussed, and possible reasons for the difference between these triggering waves and the more common, organizing, waves are mentioned. Other aspects of large-scale star formation, such as the occurrence of kiloparsec-size regions of activity and kiloparsec-range propagation, are illustrated with numerous examples. The importance of these largest scales to the overall mechanism of star formation in galaxies is emphasized.

We discuss HI and optical evidence for ongoing ICM-ISM interactions in 6 Hi-deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. One of the clearest cases is the highly inclined Virgo galaxy NGC 4522, which has a normal stellar disk but a truncated gas disk, and lots of extraplanar gas right next to the gas truncation radius in the disk. Unusually strong HI, Hα and radio continuum emission are all detected from the extraplanar gas. The radio continuum polarized flux and spectral index peak on the side opposite the extraplanar gas, suggesting ongoing pressure by the ICM. Four other HI-deficient edge-on Virgo spirals show evidence of extraplanar ISM gas or exhibit asymmetries in their disk HI distributions, but contain much less extraplanar HI than NGC 4522. Comparison with recent simulations suggests this difference may be evolutionary, with large surface densities of extraplanar gas observed only in early phases of an ICM-ISM interaction. In NGC 4569, the Hα image shows 2 effects of ICM pressure on the galaxy ISM. An anomalous arm of HII regions, possibly extraplanar, emerges from the edge of a truncated Hα disk. This resembles the arms seen in simulations which are formed by the combined effects of wind pressure plus rotation. An extended nebulosity near the minor axis, also in the NW, is interpreted as a starburst outflow bubble disturbed by ICM wind pressure.

After several years of relative quiescence, the flux of BL Lac has increased dramatically at centimeter wavelength, starting about epoch 1979.9 (Fig. 1). We have begun a series of VLBI observations to monitor the milliarcsecond structure at λ6 and λ2.8 cm wavelengths, using a five element VLBI array consisting of telescopes at Bonn, West Germany; Westford, MA; Green Bank, WV; Ft. Davis, TX; and Owens Valley, CA. The first two observations, in 1980 May and September, were at 5 GHz and were not of sufficient resolution to distinguish individual components in the source (Mutel, Phillips and Aller 1981). They did show, however, that the source was highly elongated along position angle ∼ 10° and was expanding that axis with a velocity of ∼4 c. The position angle is the same as several previous VLBI observations of this source, both during quiet periods and during previous flux outbursts (Pearson and Readhead 1981; Shaffer 1978 and references therein).

Observational and theoretical studies of solar and stellar magnetic fields are reviewed. The discussion draws together several themes that emerged during IAU Symposium 102 on “Solar and Stellar Magnetic Fields: Origins and Coronal Effects,” and identifies a number of areas in which research over the next few years is likely to be fruitful.

We report on the abundances of energetic particles from impulsive solar flares, including those from a survey of 228 3 He-rich events, with 3He/4He > 0.1, observed by the ISEE 3 spacecraft from 1978 August through 1991 April. The rate of occurrence of these events corresponds to ~1000 events yr−1 on the solar disk at solar maximum. Thus the resonant plasma processes that enhance 3He and heavy elements are a common occurrence in impulsive solar flares. To supply the observed fluence of 3He in large events, the acceleration must be highly efficient and the source region must be relatively deep in the atmosphere at a density of more than 1010 atoms cm−3 .3He/4He may decrease in very large impulsive events because of depletion of 3He in the source region.

The event-to-event variations in 3He/4He, H/4He, e/p, and Fe/C are uncorrelated in our event sample. Abundances of the elements show a pattern in which, relative to coronal composition, 4He, C, N, and O have normal abundance ratios, while Ne, Mg, and Si are enhanced by a factor ~2.5 and Fe by a factor ~7. This pattern suggests that elements are accelerated from a region of the corona with an electron temperature of ~3-5 MK, where elements in the first group are fully ionized (Q/A = 0.5), those in the second group have two orbital electrons (Q/A ~ 0.43), and Fe has Q/A ~ 0.28. Ions with the same gyrofrequency absorb waves of that frequency and are similarly accelerated and enhanced. Further stripping may occur after acceleration as the ions begin to interact with the streaming electrons that generated the plasma waves.

A previously published model of a detached binary evolving into deep contact, under the assumption that both components fill the same equipotential surface, is tested for self-consistency. Hydrodynamic equations describing the flow between components at their interface indicate an enormous discrepancy in the magnitude and direction of the flow in the evolutionary calculation. This behavior strongly supports the view that binaries reaching contact in this way undergo a cyclic thermal instability as in many models of W Ursae Majoris systems, rather than overflowing an outer Lagrangian point.

In recent years there have been a number of efforts across Africa to develop the field of astronomy as well as to reap benefit from astronomy for African people. This presentation will discuss the case of the SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) Collateral Benefits Programme (SCBP) which was set up to ensure societal benefit from astronomy. With African society as the target, the SCBP has embarked on various projects from school level education to public understanding of science to socio-economic development, the latter mainly being felt in the rural communities surrounding the South African Astronomical Observatory (home to SALT). A development plan for “Astronomy in Africa” will also be discussed. This plan has been drawn up with input from all over Africa and themed “Astronomy for Education”. The Africa case stands as a good example for the IYA cornerstone project “Developing Astronomy Globally” which focuses on developing regions.

The solar-terrestrial energy transfer, due to the total solar irradiance (TSI), solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field, has 11-year modulation during the sunspot cycles. Other oscillations of solar-terrestrial energy transfer are with periods of 22 and 45 year due to the magnetic reversal and equatorial solar asymmetry, which cause corresponding oscillations of all Earth systems, including climate and weather, atmosphere and ocean circulations, geomagnetic field and core processes. A part of this energy variation is transformed to oscillations of the Earth rotation. A model of indirect mechanism of Earth rotation excitation during sunspot cycles is proposed, which is based on global water circulation and periodical mass transfer between oceans and polar ice caps. The oscillations of the mean sea level (MSL) with periods 11, 22 and 45 years are determined by sea level data for the last two centuries from 13 maregraph stations. The necessary energy of water evaporation, corresponding to the observed MSL variations is provided by TSI oscillations with amplitudes between 0.2-0.5W/m2, determined by means of reconstructed time series of the TSI since 1610. The determined mean Universal Time (UT1) amplitudes, corresponding to the 22-year and 45-year cycles of the solar activity are 185ms and 310ms.

The physical state of the intergalactic medium can be probed in great detail with the intervening absorption systems seen in quasar spectra. The properties of the hydrogen absorbers depend on many cosmological parameters, such as the matter power spectrum, reionisation history, ionising background and the nature of the dark matter. The spectra also contain metal lines, which can be used to constrain the star formation history and the feedback processes acting in large and small galaxies. Simulations have been instrumental in investigating to what extent these parameters can be unambiguously constrained with current and future data. This paper is meant as an introduction to this subject, and reviews techniques and methods for simulating the intergalactic medium.

The star formation, mass assembly and chemical enrichment histories of galaxies, and their present distributions of dark matter, remain encoded in their stellar populations. Distinguishing the actual distribution functions of stellar age, metallicity and kinematics at several locations in a range of galaxies, sampling across Hubble types and representative environments, is the information required for a robust description of galaxy histories. Achieving this requires large aperture, to provide the sensitivity to reach a range of environs and Hubble types beyond the Local Group, to provide high spatial resolution, since the fields are crowded, and preferably with optical performance since age-sensitivity is greatest near the main-sequence turn-off, and metallicity-sensitivity for these warm stars is greatest in the optical.

We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength range, from the UV to the IR. For C, Ca, Ti, and Fe, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from the lines of the two ionisation stages. The C I, Ca II, and Fe II emission lines were detected in the near IR spectrum of the late B-type subgiant star HD 160762. They are well reproduced in the classical hydrostatic model atmosphere, when applying our NLTE methods.

In the past decade, several considerable achievements have been reached in the field of Galactic microquasars, especially in light of the extreme variability of their relativistic jets. These jets are now known to exist in at least three different flavours: the self absorbed compact jets in the hard state, the transient and discrete ejection events associated with the state transitions, and the emission associated with the interaction of the jets on the interstellar medium. Although their phenomenology is now starting to be rather well established, their emission and contribution to the total energy budget of microquasars is still the subject of active debate. One way to probe the origin of their emission at various wavelengths is to use the broadband correlations that may exist between different energy domains. Initiated in the radio and X-ray ranges, these broadband flux correlations now include optical and infrared observations of black hole candidates and also neutron star systems. In this review, I also outline the current observational status of the emission of relativistic jets at high energy.

Boxy/peanut bulges in disk galaxies have been associated to stellar bars. In this talk, we discuss the different properties of such bulges and their relation with the corresponding bar, using a very large sample of a few hundred numerical N-body simulations. We present and inter-compare various methods of measuring the boxy/peanut bulge properties, namely its strength, shape and possible asymmetry. Some of these methods can be applied to both simulations and observations. Our final goal is to get correlations that will allow us to obtain information on the boxy/peanut bulge for a galaxy viewed face-on as well as information on the bars of galaxies viewed edge-on.

Large-scale dipolar surface magnetic fields have been detected in a fraction of OB stars, however only few stellar evolution models of massive stars have considered the impact of these fossil fields. We are performing 1D hydrodynamical model calculations taking into account evolutionary consequences of the magnetospheric-wind interactions in a simplified parametric way. Two effects are considered: i) the global mass-loss rates are reduced due to mass-loss quenching, and ii) the surface angular momentum loss is enhanced due to magnetic braking. As a result of the magnetic mass-loss quenching, the mass of magnetic massive stars remains close to their initial masses. Thus magnetic massive stars - even at Galactic metallicity - have the potential to be progenitors of ‘heavy’ stellar mass black holes. Similarly, at Galactic metallicity, the formation of pair instability supernovae is plausible with a magnetic progenitor.
