The total number of true, likely and possible planetary nebulae (PN) now known in the Milky Way is about 3000, approximately twice the number known a decade ago. The new discoveries are a legacy of the recent availability of wide-field, narrowband imaging surveys, primarily in the light of Hα. The two most important are the AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS Hα survey SHS and the Isaac Newton photometric Hα survey IPHAS, which are responsible for most of the new discoveries. A serious problem with previous PN catalogs is that several different kinds of astrophysical objects are able to mimic PN in some of their observed properties leading to significant contamination. These objects include H~II regions and Strömgren zones around young O/B stars, reflection nebulae, Wolf-Rayet ejecta, supernova remnants, Herbig-Haro objects, young stellar objects, B[e] stars, symbiotic stars and outflows, late-type stars, cataclysmic variables, low redshift emission-line galaxies, and even image/detector flaws. PN catalogs such as the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα Planetary Nebula catalog (MASH) have been carefully vetted to remove these mimics using the wealth of new wide-field multi-wavelength data and our 100% follow-up spectroscopy to produce a compilation of new PN discoveries of high purity. During this process significant numbers of PN mimics have been identified. The aim of this project is to compile these MASH rejects into a catalog of Miscellaneous Emission Nebulae (MEN) and to highlight the most unusual and interesting examples. A new global analysis of these MEN objects is underway before publishing the MEN catalog online categorizing objects by type together with their spectra and multi-wavelength images.

We present new determinations of integrated Hα flux for ~1100 Galactic planetary nebulae measured from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) and its northern counterpart, the Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey (VTSS). This catalogue is the largest homogeneous database of its kind, tripling the number of currently available measurements.

We present results from systematic Herschel/HIFI observations of molecular lines in the FIR/sub-mm from young planetary nebulae. The high spectral resolution provided by the hetorodyne spectrometer HIFI allows properly studying the line profiles, whose structure corresponds to the various kinematics of the most massive nebular components, including fast bipolar outflows and slow shells. In particular, we have studied the excitation properties of the high-velocity (dense) flows. In some cases we find typical temperatures of the fast gas over 100-200 K, though in others it remains cool, ≲30K. We argue that the thermodynamics of the molecule-rich bipolar outflows is driven by fast radiative cooling, after the passage of the shock that accelerated it.

After very dense and slow winds erode the outer layer of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star down to a thin H-rich layer (≃10−3 M⊙) the star becomes a post-AGB star and evolves at constant luminosity towards hotter temperatures. It may then becomes a planetary nebula nucleus (PNN) at the centre of a planetary nebula (PN). During these phases, the thin H-rich surface layer of the star is eroded by winds. Stardust oxide and silicate grains are recovered from meteorites. The origin of the “Group II grains” that show enrichments in 17O and depletions in 18O is currently explained by invoking the occurrence of some kind of extra-mixing process in AGB stars. We suggest instead that these grains originated from the winds of post-AGB stars and PNN. These winds show the signature of H-burning. We will do this by comparing our predictions from stellar models to the compositions observed in Group II stardust oxide and silicate grains. We find that the composition of the thin H-rich layer lost in the post-AGB and PNN winds is close to that of Group II grains, however the match with the Al ratios needs to be improved. Considering the uncertainities in the 25Mg and 26Al proton capture rates may be helped in this respect.

Fullerenes, the carbon molecules with 60 and 70 atoms, were recently detected in a series of planetary nebulae, in protoplanetary nebulae and in other astrophysical objects. The detection and the quantitative determination of these molecules was made possible by the measurement of their reference infrared spectra and the relative molar extinction coefficients and integrated molar absorptivity on laboratory scale. It is expected that also fulleranes the hydrogenated derivatives of C60 and C70 may be present in the same objects where fullerenes were detected. This prompted us to synthesize the hydrogenated fullerenes, to record their infrared spectra and the measure the molar extinction coefficients and integrated molar absorptivity on laboratory scale to have a reference in the search of these fullerene derivatives in space

In view of their nature, planetary nebulae have very short lifetimes, and the chemical abundances derived so far have a natural bias favoring younger objects. In this work, we report physical parameters and abundances for a sample of old PNe located in the galactic bulge, based on low dispersion spectroscopy secured at the SOAR telescope using the Goodman Spectrograph. The new data allow us to extend our database including older, weaker objects that are at the faint end of the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). The results show that the abundances of our sample are lower than those from our previous work. Additionally, the average abundances of the galactic bulge do not follow the observed trend of the radial abundance gradient in the disk. These results are in agreement with a chemical evolution model for the Galaxy recently developed by our group.

Since its discovery, the feature at 21 μm has been detected in all C-rich proto-PNe of intermediate spectral type (A–G) and – weakly – in a few PNe and AGB stars, but the nature of its carriers remains unknown. In this paper, we show the detection of this feature in the spectra of three new stars obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. In the attempt to relate the unidentified feature to other dust features, we retrieved mid-IR spectra of all the 21 μm sources currently known from ISO and Spitzer archives and noticed a correlation between the flux emitted in the 21 μm feature and that emitted at 7 and 11 μm (PAH bands and HAC broad emission). Such a correlation may point to a common nature of the carriers.

We report trigonometric parallx measurements for H2O masers around the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2 carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array. Based on astrometric monitoring for 1 year, we measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.89 ± 0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.12+0.05−0.05 kpc. This is the most accurate distance to OH 231.8+4.2, and the first one based on an annual parallax measurement. The distribution and internal motions of the H2O masers are consistent with the bipolar outflow suggested in literatures.

We present the most extensive, long-slit, high-resolution coverage of the complex planetary nebula (PN), NGC 7026. Ten spectra were acquired using the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer at San Pedro Martir Observatory in Baja California, Mexico, and each shows exquisite detail, revealing the intricate structure of this object. Incorporating these spectra into the 3-dimensional visualization and kinematic program, Shape, and using HST images of NGC 7026, we have produced a detailed structural and kinematic model of this PN. Knowledge of the 3-D structure of this nebula is relevant to understand the physics behind the extended X-ray emission in this object.

We present preliminary results of our deep Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio-continuum survey of the Magellanic Clouds Planetary Nebulae.

Bipolar nebulae constitute a large subset of the planetary nebulae population. We present the first results of a project aimed to map physical parameters and chemical abundances across extended planetary nebulae with bipolar structure. These results can be used as input and constraints into numerical simulations in order to reproduce their properties in the visual band of the spectrum. This provides a way to examine the non-homogeneity present in this kind of object, as well as a tool to derive their intrinsic properties, like tridimensional geometry and matter distribution, central star properties, distance, and other properties in a self-consistent way. Here we show our results for two of these objects: IC 4406 and NGC 6572.

NGC 2438 is a classical multiple shell or halo planetary nebula (PN). Its central star and the main nebula are well studied. Also it was target of various hydrodynamic simulations (Corradi et al. 2000). This initiated a discussion whether the haloes are mainly containing recombined gas (Schönberner et al. 2002), or if they are still ionized (Armsdorfer et al. 2003). An analysis of narrow-band images and long slit spectra at multiple slit positions was done to obtain a deeper look on morphological details and the properties of the outer shell and halo. For this work there was data available from ESO (direct imaging and long slit spectroscopy) and from SAAO (spectroscopic observations using a small slit, scanning over the whole nebula). Using temperature measurements from emission lines resulted in an electron temperature which clearly indicates a fully ionized stage. Additionally measurements of the electron density suggest a variation of the filling factor.

We estimate distances to the spherical planetary nebula Abell 39 and the bipolar planetary nebula NGC 7027 by interpolating from a wide grid of photoionization models using the 3-D code, MOCASSIN. We find preliminary distances of 1.5 kpc and 0.9 kpc respectively, with uncertainties of about 30%.

The iron depletion factors found in Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) span over two orders of magnitude, suggesting that there are differences in the grain formation and destruction processes from object to object. We explore here the relation between the iron depletions, the infrared dust features, and the C/O abundance ratios in a sample of Galactic PNe. We find that those objects with C/O<1 show a trend of increasing depletions for higher values of C/O, whereas PNe with C/O>1 break the trend and cover all the range of depletions. Most of the PNe with C/O<1 show silicate features, but several PNe with C-rich features have C/O<1, probably reflecting the uncertainties associated with the derivation of C/O. PAHs are distributed over the entire range of iron depletions and C/O values.

The Kepler Observatory offers unprecedented photometric precision (<1 mmag) and cadence for monitoring the central stars of planetary nebulae, allowing the detection of tiny periodic light curve variations, a possible signature of binarity. With this precision free from the observational gaps dictated by weather and lunar cycles, we are able to detect companions at much larger separations and with much smaller radii than ever before. We have been awarded observing time to obtain light-curves of the central stars of the six confirmed and possible planetary nebulae in the Kepler field, including the newly discovered object Kn 61, at cadences of both 30 min and 1 min. Of these six objects, we could confirm for three a periodic variability consistent with binarity. Two others are variables, but the initial data set presents only weak periodicities. For the central star of Kn 61, Kepler data will be available in the near future.

During the past 20 years, the idea that non-spherical planetary nebulae might need a binary or planetary interaction to be shaped was discussed by various authors. It is now generally agreed that the varied morphologies of planetary nebulae cannot be fully explained solely by single star evolution. Observationally, more binary central stars of planetary nebulae have been discovered, opening new possibilities to understand the connections between binarity and morphology. So far, ≃45 binary central stars of planetary nebulae have been detected, most being close systems detected via flux variability. In order to determine the PN binary fraction, one needs a method that can detect wider binaries. We present here recent results concentrating on binary infrared excess observations aimed at detecting binaries of any separation.

We discuss the 3D morphology, ionization structure, and kinematics of NGC 2392, the “Eskimo,” based on new and archival HST imagery and new long-slit echelle spectroscopy. High spatial resolution ionization maps of the nebula were made from HST WFPC2 imagery and compared with their velocity structure in various emission lines from echelle spectra taken with the 4m telescope at Kitt Peak. The imagery and spectra were then compared to map the kinematics of the nebula in several emission lines and decode the 3-dimensional morphology and ionization structure of the nebula, including that of C+2 from C III] 1909 Å for the first time.

We predict intensities of lines of CII, NI, NII, OI and OII and compare them with a deep spectroscopic survey of IC 418 to test the effect of excitation of nebular emission lines by continuum fluorescence of starlight. Our calculations use a nebular model and a synthetic spectrum of its central star to take into account excitation of the lines by continuum fluorescence and recombination. The NII spectrum is mostly produced by fluorescence due to the low excitation conditions of the nebula, but many CII and OII lines have more excitation by fluorescence than recombination. In the neutral envelope, the NI permitted lines are excited by fluorescence, and almost all the OI lines are excited by recombination. Electron excitation produces the forbidden optical lines of OI, but continuum fluorescence excites most of the NI forbidden line intensities. Lines excited by fluorescence of light below the Lyman limit thus suggest a new diagnostic to explore the photodissociation region of a nebula.

We present our analysis of the spectra of NGC 7027 taken with the PACS and SPIRE instruments of the Herschel satellite.

We present very deep spectroscopic observations of the rich optical recombination line (ORL) spectrum of the bright Saturn nebula NGC 7009. Detailed spectral analyses, combined with systematic emission line identifications, in the whole optical range (3040–11 000 Å) give more than 1000 emission lines, over 80% of which are ORLs. New calculations of the N ii effective recombination coefficients in intermediate coupling scheme are carried out. These N ii atomic data, together with the most recent O ii and Ne ii effective recombination coefficients, are utilized in the spectral analyses of NGC 7009. Departure from LS coupling is noticed. Agreement is found between the observed and predicted relative intensities of ORLs. The elemental abundances of C, N, O, and Ne deduced from ORLs are systematically higher than those from collisionally excited lines (CELs) by a factor of 5–7.
