The CHIME telescope (the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment) recently built in Penticton, Canada, is currently being commissioned. Originally designed as a cosmology experiment, it was soon recognized that CHIME has the potential to simultaneously serve as an incredibly useful radio telescope for pulsar science. CHIME operates across a wide bandwidth of 400–800 MHz and will have a collecting area and sensitivity comparable to that of the 100-m class radio telescopes. CHIME has a huge field of view of ~250 square degrees. It will be capable of observing 10 pulsars simultaneously, 24-hours per day, every day, while still accomplishing its missions to study Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Fast Radio Bursts. It will carry out daily monitoring of roughly half of all pulsars in the northern hemisphere, including all NANOGrav pulsars employed in the Pulsar Timing Array project. It will cycle through all pulsars in the northern hemisphere with a range of cadence of no more than 10 days.

The upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) with its unprecedented sensitivity and high figure of merit, is expected to result in the discovery of a large population of pulsars including pulsars of previously unknown type. In the phase-2 of the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey with the uGMRT we will reach 1/4th of sensitivity of the SKA Phase-1. In this paper we highlight the salient features of the survey of pulsars and fast transients with the uGMRT highlighting its discovery potential. The extended GMRT (eGMRT) equipped with wide field-of-view, increased collecting area will have unprecedented sensitivity in time-domain astronomy, reaching close to SKA-Phase1. Many fold increase in the number of elements, increase in the baseline length and addition of phased array feed will make eGMRT an excellent instrument for the survey of pulsars and transients with a promise of detecting large variety of pulsars and fast radio bursts.

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) presents an exciting new capability for exploring the modulation properties of X-ray emitting neutron stars, including large area, low background, extremely precise absolute event time stamps, superb low-energy response and flexible scheduling. The Pulsation Searches and Multiwavelength Coordination working group has designed a 2.5 Ms observing program to search for emission and characterize the modulation properties of about 30 known or suspected neutron star sources across a number of source categories. A key early goal will be to search for pulsations from millisecond pulsars that might exhibit thermal pulsations from the surface suitable for pulse profile modeling to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In addition, we will search for pulsations from transitional millisecond pulsars, isolated neutron stars, low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, central compact objects and other sources. We present our science plan and initial results from the first months of the NICER mission, including the discovery of pulsations from the millisecond pulsar J1231–1411.

Despite the early optical detection of the Crab pulsar in 1969, optical pulsars have become the poor cousin of the neutron star family. Only five normal pulsars have been observed to pulse in the optical waveband. A further three magnetars/SGRs have been detected in the optical/near IR. Optical pulsars are intrinsically faint with a first order luminosity, predicted by Pacini, to be proportional to P−10, where P is the pulsar’s period. Consequently they require both large telescopes, generally over-subscribed, and long exposure times, generally difficult to get. However optical observations have the benefit that polarisation and spectral observations are possible compared to X-ray and gamma-ray observations where polarisation measurements are limited. Over the next decade the number of optical pulsars should increase as optical detectors approach 100% quantum efficiency and as we move into the era of extremely large telescopes where limiting fluxes will be 30 to 100 times fainter compared to existing optical telescopes.

The first known pulsar glitch was discovered in the Vela pulsar at both Parkes and Goldstone in March 1969. Since then the number of known glitches has grown enormously, with more than 520 glitches now known in more than 180 pulsars. Details of glitch parameters and post-glitch recoveries are described and some implications for the physics of neutron stars are discussed.

Pulsar glitches are thought to be probes of the superfluid interior of neutron stars. These sudden jumps in frequency observed in many pulsars are generally assumed to be the macroscopic manifestation of superfluid vortex motion on a microscopic scale. Resolving and modelling such phenomena on the scale of a neutron star is, however, a challenging problem which still remains open, fifty years after the discovery of pulsars. In this article I will review recent theoretical progress, both on the microscopic level and on the macroscopic level, and discuss which constraints on the models can be provided by observations.

Matter in neutron star cores reaches extremely high densities, forming states of matter that cannot be generated in the laboratory. The Equation of State (EOS) of the matter links to macroscopic observables, such as mass M and radius R, via the stellar structure equations. A promising technique for measuring M and R exploits hotspots (burst oscillations) that form on the stellar surface when material accreted from a companion star undergoes a thermonuclear explosion. As the star rotates, the hotspot gives rise to a pulsation, and relativistic effects encode information about M and R into the pulse profile. However the burst oscillation mechanism remains unknown, introducing uncertainty when inferring the EOS. I review the progress that we are making towards cracking this long-standing problem, and establishing burst oscillations as a robust tool for measuring M and R. This is a major goal for future large area X-ray telescopes.

A superconductor of paired protons is thought to form in the core of neutron stars soon after their birth. Minimum energy conditions suggest that magnetic flux is expelled from the superconducting region due to the Meissner effect, such that the neutron star core retains or is largely devoid of magnetic fields for some nuclear equation of state and proton pairing models. We show via neutron star cooling simulations that the superconducting region expands faster than flux is expected to be expelled because cooling timescales are much shorter than timescales of magnetic field diffusion. Thus magnetic fields remain in the bulk of the neutron star core for at least 106 − 107yr. We estimate the size of flux free regions at 107yr to be ≲ 100m for a magnetic field of 1011G and possibly smaller for stronger field strengths.

A statistical study of the glitch population and the behavior of the glitch activity across the known population of neutron stars is presented. A constant ratio between the glitch activity and the spin-down rate $\dot{\nu }_{\rm {g}}$/|$\dot{\nu }$| = 0.010 ± 0.001 is consistent with the behavior of all rotation-powered pulsars and magnetars. This relation is dominated by large glitches (Δν ≳ 10 μ Hz), which occur at a rate directly proportional to |$\dot{\nu }$|. The only exception are the rotation-powered pulsars with the highest values of |$\dot{\nu }$|, such as the Crab pulsar and PSR B0540–69, which exhibit a much smaller glitch activity, intrinsically different from each other and from the rest of the population. Braking indices are used to describe the evolution of pulsars rotation, and can offer insights into the braking mechanism that dominates the slow down. Here we discuss the main difficulties associated with measuring braking indices and the complexity of interpreting these measurements. Considering recent braking index measurements on pulsars with large and regular glitches, we comment on the significant effects that the loosely coupled superfluid inside pulsars might have on their spin evolution.

Simultaneous measurements of the radius and mass of neutron stars (NSs) are expected from the new generation of X-ray telescopes, potentially constraining the NS equation of state (EoS). However using ‘non-unified’ EoSs with the ones for the core and the crust not based on the same nuclear model can introduce an uncertainty on the radius as large as the precision expected from these instruments. I present two solutions to this problem: a large collection of unified EoSs and an approximate and yet precise approach that, with no need of a crust EoS, provides the relation between the NS mass and radius. I discuss correlations between the NS radius and nuclear parameters, possibly allowing to constrain the NS radius with experiments on Earth. Finally, I show that in spite of the observation of massive NSs, one can not exclude that hyperons appear at high densities in NSs due to the scarcity of the available experimental data.

In accreting neutron star X-ray transients, the neutron star crust can be substantially heated out of thermal equilibrium with the core during an accretion outburst. The observed subsequent cooling in quiescence (when accretion has halted) offers a unique opportunity to study the structure and thermal properties of the crust. Initially crust cooling modelling studies focussed on transient X-ray binaries with prolonged accretion outbursts (> 1 year) such that the crust would be significantly heated for the cooling to be detectable. Here we present the results of applying a theoretical model to the observed cooling curve after a short accretion outburst of only ~10 weeks. In our study we use the 2010 outburst of the transiently accreting 11 Hz X-ray pulsar in the globular cluster Terzan 5. Observationally it was found that the crust in this source was still hot more than 4 years after the end of its short accretion outburst. From our modelling we found that such a long-lived hot crust implies some unusual crustal properties such as a very low thermal conductivity (> 10 times lower than determined for the other crust cooling sources). In addition, we present our preliminary results of the modelling of the ongoing cooling of the neutron star in MXB 1659-298. This transient X-ray source went back into quiescence in March 2017 after an accretion phase of ~1.8 years. We compare our predictions for the cooling curve after this outburst with the cooling curve of the same source obtained after its previous outburst which ended in 2001.

PSR B1828–11 is a young pulsar once thought to be undergoing free precession and recently found instead to be switching magnetospheric states in tandem with spin-down changes. Here we show the two extreme states of the mode-changing found for this pulsar and comment briefly on its interpretation.

This talk commented on our progress in understanding high Ė pulsar output, with the photon power dominated by GeV radiation and the total power dominated by the e±/B wind. We are increasingly appreciating the anisotropy in these outflows, with high energy pulsar beaming probed by the distribution of γ-ray pulse profiles and wind anisotropy mapped by synchrotron images of PWNe. Possible hemispheric asymmetry and the prospects for additional probes of pulsar spindown, particularly from compact binaries in the black widow class, are briefly mentioned.

Sometimes the explosion of a supernova can generate a pulsar, most of whose rotational energy is carried away by an energetic wind of particles and magnetic fields expanding into its surroundings and eventually forming extended nebulae, i.e. the pulsar wind nebulae. The experimental advances reached in the last decades, from radio frequencies up to the highest gamma-ray energies, with instruments like VLA, VLBA, Chandra, NuStar, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. among the others, led to the discovery of hundreds of this kind of sources allowing for population studies. In addition, this variety of high-precision spectral and morphological measurement provided an unprecedented opportunity to test and push forward the state-of-the-art theoretical models. In this contribution, we will review the latest, and most significant theoretical and experimental results.

PSR B1820–30A is located in the globular cluster NGC 6624 and has the smallest projected distance to the centre of any globular cluster in the sky plane. We observe this millisecond pulsar over more than 25 years and obtain higher-order rotational frequency time derivative measurements through high-precision timing. Modelling these higher-order derivatives as being due to orbital motion, we find that the pulsar is in either a low-eccentricity smaller orbit with a low mass companion or a high-eccentricity larger orbit with a massive companion. The cluster mass properties and the observed properties of other nearby sources indicate that the high-eccentricity solution is more probably. This reveals that the pulsar is orbiting around an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) of mass >7500 M⊙ located at the cluster centre. This contribution is based on previous work published in MNRAS 471, 1258 (2017).

Multi-decade observing campaigns of the globular clusters 47 Tucanae and M15 have led to an outstanding number of discoveries. Here, we report on the latest results of the long-term observations of the pulsars in these two clusters. For most of the pulsars in 47 Tucanae we have measured, among other things, their higher-order spin period derivatives, which have in turn provided stringent constraints on the physical parameters of the cluster, such as its distance and gravitational potential. For M15, we have studied the relativistic spin precession effect in PSR B2127+11C. We have used full-Stokes observations to model the precession effect, and to constrain the system geometry. We find that the visible beam of the pulsar is swiftly moving away from our line of sight and may very soon become undetectable. On the other hand, we expect to see the opposite emission beam sometime between 2041 and 2053.

A wind nebula generating extended X-ray emission was recently detected surrounding Swift 1834.9-0846. This is the first magnetar for which such a (pulsar) wind nebula (PWN) was found. I demonstrate that Swift 1834.9-0846’s nebula can be rotationally-powered if it is being compressed by the environment. The physical reason behind this is the dominance of adiabatic heating over all other cooling and escape processes. This effect can happen only for pulsars of relatively low spin-down power and can make for very efficient nebulae. This contribution is based on previous work published in ApJ 835, article id. 54, 13 pp. (2017).

The standard shock acceleration model of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) does not account for the hard spectrum in radio wavelengths. The origin of the radio-emitting particles is also important to determine the pair production efficiency in the pulsar magnetosphere. Here, we propose a possible resolution for the particle energy distribution in PWNe; the radio-emitting particles are not accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock but are stochastically accelerated by turbulence inside PWNe. We upgrade our past one-zone spectral evolution model including the energy diffusion, i.e., the stochastic acceleration, and apply to the Crab Nebula. For a particle injection to the stochastic acceleration process, we consider the continuous injection from the supernova ejecta or the impulsive injection associated with supernova explosion. The observed broadband spectrum and the decay of the radio flux are reproduced by tuning the amount of the particle injected to the stochastic acceleration process. Our results imply that some unveiled mechanisms, such as back reaction to the turbulence, are required to make the energies of stochastically and shock accelerated particles comparable.

Phased VLA observations of the Galactic center magnetar J1745-2900 over 8-12 GHz reveal rich single pulse behavior. The average profile is comprised of several distinct components and is fairly stable over day timescales and GHz frequencies. The average profile is dominated by the jitter of relatively narrow pulses. The pulses in each of the four profile components are uncorrelated in phase and amplitude, although the occurrence of pulse components 1 and 2 appear to be correlated. Using a collection of the brightest individual pulses, we verify that the index of the dispersion law is consistent with the expected cold plasma value of 2. The scattering time is weakly constrained, but consistent with previous measurements, while the dispersion measure DM = 1763+3−10 pc cm−3 is lower than previous measurements, which could be a result of time variability in the line-of-sight column density or changing pulse profile shape over time or frequency.
