Low density (LD) steels have shown particular characteristics in terms of mechanical properties and microstructure, since they have high strength, high ductility and density reduction up to 18%. On the other hand, the addition of microalloying elements such as Ti and B generate hardening by solid solution and precipitation, as well as grain refinement effect. LD steels generate nano-sized kappa phase precipitated from the austenite matrix, and these advanced steels can reach strength and elongation up to 780 MPa and 60%, respectively. The main objective of this research work is the metallographic, structural and mechanical characterization of a LD steel microalloyed with Ti/B in as-cast and -homogenized conditions. For this purpose a Fe-27Mn-7Al-1.2C (%wt) LD steel microalloyed with Ti/B was melted in a vacuum-induction furnace and cast in metallic mold. LD-Ti/B steel samples were homogenized at 1100 °C during 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200 minutes followed by water quenching. Metallographic, structural and mechanical characterization was carried out by optical (LOM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microhardness Vickers testing (HV10), respectively. In general, results showed a typical dendritic microstructure with average grain size of 1256 μm in the as-cast condition. On the other hand, the as-homogenized condition showed an austenitic equiaxial microstructure with average grain size from 164 to 940 μm. Austenite, ferrite and kappa phases were detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Also, second-phase particles such as AlN, TiC and MnS were detected by LOM and SEM-EDS analysis. LD steel microalloyed with Ti/B exhibited the highest microhardness Vickers value (235 HV10) in the as-cast condition, whilst in the as-homogenized condition microhardness gradually decreases from 223 to 198 HV10 as holding time increases.

The unique electronic structure of diamond and its excellent thermal properties allow a broad range of possible applications; from electron sources to RF electronics. However, knowledge of the surface energy levels is essential to produce efficient, high-quality devices. We investigate the valence band position and resulting negative electron affinity for hydrogen terminated diamond under ambient, low vacuum and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. There was a -0.5 eV change in valence band position causing a negative electron affinity shift from -1.1 eV under UHV to -0.6 eV in ambient pressure. We compare the photoemission current under each environment to predict the ability of the sample to be used as an electron source. The maximum emission was observed when the sample displayed the largest negative affinity. A scanning photoemission measurement is demonstrated to highlight the superior photoemission yield from the hydrogen terminated diamond surface compared to the stainless steel contact. A scanning Kelvin probe measurement is shown to illustrate a method of analyzing the contact potential difference across the diamond surface. Within high-power RF electronics, devices are likely to be operating at increased temperatures so knowledge of the impact of temperature on the energy levels is important. We study the valence band and Fermi level positions for hydrogen terminated diamond from room temperature (300K) to 425K under low and UHV conditions. The Fermi level moved below the valence band edge at increased temperature, illustrating the effect of the 2D hole gas at the surface. We also analyzed the photoemission characteristics and found an increase in yield with increasing temperature. The measurement techniques used to evaluate the energy levels of diamond: photoemission spectroscopy and Kelvin probe measurements, in ambient and vacuum, allow analysis to be completed in minutes. This offers an initial analysis alternative to elucidate more information and predict performance prior to the more time-consuming full device manufacture and characterization.

Before 2008, it was common knowledge around the world that insulation always saved air conditioning energy in buildings. In 2008 a phenomenon called anti-insulation was brought to light by Masoso & Grobler. They demonstrated that there are instances when insulation materials in a building directly increase building energy use. Researchers around the world then echoed the message. Recent work by some of the authors investigated the anti-insulation phenomenon in summer and winter for both hot climatic regions (Botswana) and cold climatic regions (Canada). Their study concluded that there is still a mystery of exaggerated sources of heat inside the building aggravating the anti-insulation phenomenon. They hypothesized that incident solar radiation through the windows could be one of the causes. This paper therefore focuses on eliminating direct solar radiation through windows by applying external shadings on a previously anti-insulation building. The energy saved is evaluated and the possible reversal of anti-insulation studied. The study is useful to energy policy makers and the building industry as it showcases the existence of a possible silent killer (anti-insulation) and demonstrates that investing large sums of money on insulation in buildings may not be the most economic thing to do in building design decisions.

Low dimensional lead halide perovskite particles are of tremendous interest due to their size-tunable band gaps, low exciton binding energy, high absorption coefficients, outstanding quantum and photovoltaic efficiencies. Herein we report a new solution-based synthesis of stabilized Cs4PbBr6 perovskite particles with high luminescence. This method requires only mild conditions and produces colloidal particles that are ideal for highly efficient solution-based device fabrications. The synthesized microstructures not only display outstanding luminescence quantum yield but also long term stability in atmospheric conditions. Partial halide substitutions were also demonstrated to extend photoluminescence spectra of the perovskite particles. This convenient synthesis and optical tunability of Cs4PbBr6 perovskite particles will be advantageous for future applications of optoelectronic advices.

A polycrystalline Cu foam with sub-micron ligament sizes was formed by creating a non-woven fabric via electrospinning with a homogeneous mixture of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)-and copper acetate(Cu(Ac)2). Thermogravimetric measurement of the electrospun fabric of the precursor solution is reported. Oxidizing the precursor fabric at 773K formed an oxide nano-foam; subsequent heating at 573K with a reducing gas transformed the CuO nano-foam to Cu with a similar ligament and meso-scale pore size morphology. A cross-section prepared by focused ion beam lift-out shows the polycrystalline structure with multi-scale porosity. The mechanical property of the Cu nano-foam is measured by nano-indentation. The load-depth curves and deduced mechanical properties suggest that additional intra-ligament pores lead to unique structure-property relations in this non-conventional form of metal.

Emerging applications require batteries to have both high energy and high power which are not necessarily compatible. The typical inverse relationship between power and energy in batteries is often due to the slow ion diffusion in electrode materials. While the optimization of current battery technology may be sufficient to fully address this issue, we present here that novel chemistry-focused strategies based on new fundamental understanding of materials may be applied to lead to the development of a new generation of batteries that store energy sufficiently and deliver it rapidly.

A multi-scale analysis, ranging from μm → nm → Å-scaie on the influence of thermal treatment on the thermotropic copolyester based on 60 mol% (l,4)-hydroxybenzoic acid (B), 5 mol% (2,6)-hydroxynaphthoic acid (N), 17.5 mol% terephthalic acid (T) and 17.5 mol% biphenol (BP) - COTBP- was carried out. The Å and nm-scale structure was investigated by synchrotron scattering (WAXS and SAXS). Extruded tapes ca. 30 μm thick were annealed at 300 °C under air, without tension. WAXS revealed fibre-like structure with crystalline order, whereas SAXS patterns exhibited diamond-shaped diffuse scattering and discrete meridional scattering elucidating structures along the fibre axis and periodic crystallites. Heat treatment produced roughness reduction, and WAXS patterns showed reflections sharpening indicating an improvement of molecular register and packing (molecular alignment and degree of crystallinity Χ increased). Thermal treatment increased the thermal stability, melting transition and tensile Young’s modulus, E, along extrusion axis, whereas nanoindentation showed decrease of hardness and elastic modulus. Hence, a thermally-induced seif-reinforcing effect was evidenced, with microstructure reorganization correlating with improved thermo-mechanical properties.

Transition metal dichalcogenides are 2D structures with remarkable electronic, chemical, optical and mechanical properties. Monolayer and crystal properties of these structures have been extensively investigated, but a detailed understanding of the properties of their few-layer structures are still missing. In this work we investigated the mechanical differences between monolayer and multilayer WSe2 and MoSe2, through fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations (MD). It was observed that single layer WSe2/MoSe2 deposited on silicon substrates have larger friction coefficients than 2, 3 and 4 layered structures. For all considered cases it is always easier to peel off and/or to fracture MoSe2 structures. These results suggest that the interactions between first layer and substrate are stronger than interlayer interactions themselves. Similar findings have been reported for other nanomaterials and it has been speculated whether this is a universal-like behavior for 2D layered materials. We have also analyzed fracture patterns. Our results show that fracture is chirality dependent with crack propagation preferentially perpendicular to W(Mo)-Se bonds and faster for zig-zag-like defects.

Memristors represent an intriguing two-terminal device strategy potentially able to replace conventional memory devices as well as to support neuromorphic computing architectures. Here, we present the resistive switching behaviour of the sustainable and low-cost biopolymer chitosan, which can be extracted from natural chitin present for instance in crab exoskeletons. The biopolymer films were doped with Ag ions in varying concentrations and sandwiched between a bottom electrode such as fluorinated-tin-oxide and a silver top electrode. Silver-doped devices showed an overall promising resistive switching behaviour for doping concentrations between 0.5 to 1 wt% AgNO3. As bottom electrode fluorinated-tin-oxide, nickel, silver and titanium were studied and multiple write and erase cycles were recorded. However, the overall reproducibility and stability are still insufficient to support broader applicability.

Nanopore tuning via atomic layer deposition (ALD) is promising but its conformality on sub-10nm pores and its homogeneity over the whole porous network is still challenging, primarily due to the slow transport within the porous network. Conventional ALD process oftentimes falls into a dilemma: higher temperature and prolonged exposure/purge time are required to overcome the slow transport issue, but higher temperature will cause the instability of surface –OH groups and prolonged exposure/purge time will result in “over purge” at the surface vicinity, leading to another type of non-homogeneity. To resolve this issue, a new dual-stage exposure/purge ALD process was developed. Each exposure/purge step contains a longer exposure/purge stage and a shorter exposure/purge stage, where the longer stage ensures ideal exposure/purge for inner pores, and the shorter stage makes up the surface depletion for the outer pores. By doing so, we’ve been able to extend the ALD nanopore tuning to sub-10nm pores with excellent coating homogeneity and conformality.

PA6 and PMMA polymers with different MWCNTs addition (5, 7 and 9 wt %) were synthetized through casting solution, resulting in improvement properties in contrast to pristine polymers. SEM images showed the MWCNTs embedded into polymeric matrices. D, G and G´ bands of MWCNTs were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and functional groups observed in both nanocomposites by FTIR demonstrated a strong interaction. A significant increasing in electrical conductivity and microhardness was observed in all the nanocomposites. Major microhardness values were obtained in MWCNTs/PA6 (50 HV) however the MWCNTs/PMMA nanocomposites showed the highest electrical conductivity value (6.4×10-4 S/cm).
