Cubical methods have played an important role in the development of Homotopy Type Theory and Univalent Foundations (HoTT/UF) in recent years. The original motivation behind these developments was to give constructive meaning to Voevodsky’s univalence axiom, but they have since then led to a range of new results. Among the achievements of these methods is the design of new type theories and proof assistants with native support for notions from HoTT/UF, syntactic and semantic consistency results for HoTT/UF, as well as a variety of independence results and establishing that the univalence axiom does not increase the proof theoretic strength of type theory. This paper is based on lecture notes that were written for the 2019 Homotopy Type Theory Summer School at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal of these lectures was to give an introduction to cubical methods and provide sufficient background in order to make the current research in this very active area of HoTT/UF more accessible to newcomers. The focus of these notes is hence on both the syntactic and semantic aspects of these methods, in particular on cubical type theory and the various cubical set categories that give meaning to these theories.

Guided by Tarksi’s fixpoint theorem in order theory, we show how to derive monotone recursive types with constant-time roll and unroll operations within Cedille, an impredicative, constructive, and logically consistent pure typed lambda calculus. This derivation takes place within the preorder on Cedille types induced by type inclusions, a notion which is expressible within the theory itself. As applications, we use monotone recursive types to generically derive two recursive representations of data in lambda calculus, the Parigot and Scott encoding. For both encodings, we prove induction and examine the computational and extensional properties of their destructor, iterator, and primitive recursor in Cedille. For our Scott encoding in particular, we translate into Cedille a construction due to Lepigre and Raffalli (2019) that equips Scott naturals with primitive recursion, then extend this construction to derive a generic induction principle. This allows us to give efficient and provably unique (up to function extensionality) solutions for the iteration and primitive recursion schemes for Scott-encoded data.

We give two geometry of interaction models for a typed λ-calculus with recursion endowed with operators for sampling from a continuous uniform distribution and soft conditioning, namely a paradigmatic calculus for higher-order Bayesian programming. The models are based on the category of measurable spaces and partial measurable functions, and the category of measurable spaces and s-finite kernels, respectively. The former is proved adequate with respect to both a distribution-based and a sampling-based operational semantics, while the latter is proved adequate with respect to a sampling-based operational semantics.

We use a simplified version of the framework of resource monoids, introduced by Dal Lago and Hofmann, to interpret simply typed λ-calculus with constants zero and successor. We then use this model to prove a simple quantitative result about bounding the size of the normal form of λ-terms. While the bound itself is already known, this is to our knowledge the first semantic proof of this fact. Our use of resource monoids differs from the other instances found in the literature, in that it measures the size of λ-terms rather than time complexity.

Finitary monads on Pos are characterized as precisely the free-algebra monads of varieties of algebras. These are classes of ordered algebras specified by inequations in context. Analogously, finitary enriched monads on Pos are characterized: here we work with varieties of coherent algebras which means that their operations are monotone.

The present paper aims at stressing the importance of the Hofmann–Streicher groupoid model for Martin Löf Type Theory as a link with the first-order equality and its semantics via adjunctions. The groupoid model was introduced by Martin Hofmann in his Ph.D. thesis and later analysed in collaboration with Thomas Streicher. In this paper, after describing an algebraic weak factorisation system $$\mathsf {L, R}$$ on the category $${\cal C}-{\cal Gpd}$$ of $${\cal C}$$ -enriched groupoids, we prove that its fibration of algebras is elementary (in the sense of Lawvere) and use this fact to produce the factorisation of diagonals for $$\mathsf {L, R}$$ needed to interpret identity types.

We provide a constructive version of the notion of sheaf models of univalent type theory. We start by relativizing existing constructive models of univalent type theory to presheaves over a base category. Any Grothendieck topology of the base category then gives rise to a family of left-exact modalities, and we recover a model of type theory by localizing the presheaf model with respect to this family of left-exact modalities. We provide then some examples.

We introduce a novel amortised resource analysis couched in a type-and-effect system. Our analysis is formulated in terms of the physicist’s method of amortised analysis and is potentialbased. The type system makes use of logarithmic potential functions and is the first such system to exhibit logarithmic amortised complexity. With our approach, we target the automated analysis of self-adjusting data structures, like splay trees, which so far have only manually been analysed in the literature. In particular, we have implemented a semi-automated prototype, which successfully analyses the zig-zig case of splaying, once the type annotations are fixed.

We give a syntax independent formulation of finitely presented generalized algebraic theories as initial objects in categories of categories with families (cwfs) with extra structure. To this end, we simultaneously define the notion of a presentation Σ of a generalized algebraic theory and the associated category CwFΣ of small cwfs with a Σ-structure and cwf-morphisms that preserve Σ-structure on the nose. Our definition refers to the purely semantic notion of uniform family of contexts, types, and terms in CwFΣ. Furthermore, we show how to syntactically construct an initial cwf with a Σ-structure. This result can be viewed as a generalization of Birkhoff’s completeness theorem for equational logic. It is obtained by extending Castellan, Clairambault, and Dybjer’s construction of an initial cwf. We provide examples of generalized algebraic theories for monoids, categories, categories with families, and categories with families with extra structure for some type formers of Martin-Löf type theory. The models of these are internal monoids, internal categories, and internal categories with families (with extra structure) in a small category with families. Finally, we show how to extend our definition to some generalized algebraic theories that are not finitely presented, such as the theory of contextual cwfs.

Doctrines are categorical structures very apt to study logics of different nature within a unified environment: the 2-category Dtn of doctrines. Modal interior operators are characterised as particular adjoints in the 2-category Dtn. We show that they can be constructed from comonads in Dtn as well as from adjunctions in it, and we compare the two constructions. Finally we show the amount of information lost in the passage from a comonad, or from an adjunction, to the modal interior operator. The basis for the present work is provided by some seminal work of John Power.

We develop universal algebra over an enriched category and relate it to finitary enriched monads over . Using it, we deduce recent results about ordered universal algebra where inequations are used instead of equations. Then we apply it to metric universal algebra where quantitative equations are used instead of equations. This contributes to understanding of finitary monads on the category of metric spaces.

A uniform approach to computing with infinite objects like real numbers, tuples of these, compacts sets and uniformly continuous maps is presented. In the work of Berger, it was shown how to extract certified algorithms working with the signed digit representation from constructive proofs. Berger and the present author generalised this approach to complete metric spaces and showed how to deal with compact sets. Here, we unify this work and lay the foundations for doing a similar thing for the much more comprehensive class of compact Hausdorff spaces occurring in applications. The approach is of the same computational power as Weihrauch’s Type-Two Theory of Effectivity.

We consider two preorder-enriched categories of ordered partial combinatory algebras: OPCA, where the arrows are functional (i.e., projective) morphisms, and OPCA†, where the arrows are applicative morphisms. We show that OPCA has small products and finite biproducts, and that OPCA† has finite coproducts, all in a suitable 2-categorical sense. On the other hand, OPCA† lacks all nontrivial binary products. We deduce from this that the pushout, over Set, of two nontrivial realizability toposes is never a realizability topos. In contrast, we show that nontrivial subtoposes of realizability toposes are closed under pushouts over Set.

We develop the Scott model of the programming language PCF in univalent type theory. Moreover, we work constructively and predicatively. To account for the non-termination in PCF, we use the lifting monad (also known as the partial map classifier monad) from topos theory, which has been extended to univalent type theory by Escardó and Knapp. Our results show that lifting is a viable approach to partiality in univalent type theory. Moreover, we show that the Scott model can be constructed in a predicative and constructive setting. Other approaches to partiality either require some form of choice or quotient inductive-inductive types. We show that one can do without these extensions.

We construct a geometry of interaction (GoI: dynamic modelling of Gentzen-style cut elimination) for multiplicative-additive linear logic (MALL) by employing Bucciarelli–Ehrhard indexed linear logic MALL(I) to handle the additives. Our construction is an extension to the additives of the Haghverdi–Scott categorical formulation (a multiplicative GoI situation in a traced monoidal category) for Girard’s original GoI 1. The indices are shown to serve not only in their original denotational level, but also at a finer grained dynamic level so that the peculiarities of additive cut elimination such as superposition, erasure of subproofs, and additive (co-) contraction can be handled with the explicit use of indices. Proofs are interpreted as indexed subsets in the category Rel, but without the explicit relational composition; instead, execution formulas are run pointwise on the interpretation at each index, with respect to symmetries of cuts, in a traced monoidal category with a reflexive object and a zero morphism. The sets of indices diminish overall when an execution formula is run, corresponding to the additive cut-elimination procedure (erasure), and allowing recovery of the relational composition. The main theorem is the invariance of the execution formulas along cut elimination so that the formulas converge to the denotations of (cut-free) proofs.

This paper explores versions of the Yoneda Lemma in settings founded upon FM sets. In particular, we explore the lemma for three base categories: the category of nominal sets and equivariant functions; the category of nominal sets and all finitely supported functions, introduced in this paper; and the category of FM sets and finitely supported functions. We make this exploration in ordinary, enriched and internal settings. We also show that the finite support of Yoneda natural transformations is a theorem for free.

We investigate the injective types and the algebraically injective types in univalent mathematics, both in the absence and in the presence of propositional resizing. Injectivity is defined by the surjectivity of the restriction map along any embedding, and algebraic injectivity is defined by a given section of the restriction map along any embedding. Under propositional resizing axioms, the main results are easy to state: (1) Injectivity is equivalent to the propositional truncation of algebraic injectivity. (2) The algebraically injective types are precisely the retracts of exponential powers of universes. (2a) The algebraically injective sets are precisely the retracts of powersets. (2b) The algebraically injective (n+1)-types are precisely the retracts of exponential powers of universes of n-types. (3) The algebraically injective types are also precisely the retracts of algebras of the partial-map classifier. From (2) it follows that any universe is embedded as a retract of any larger universe. In the absence of propositional resizing, we have similar results that have subtler statements which need to keep track of universe levels rather explicitly, and are applied to get the results that require resizing.

We give a definition of Q-net, a generalization of Petri nets based on a Lawvere theory Q, for which many existing variants of Petri nets are a special case. This definition is functorial with respect to change in Lawvere theory, and we exploit this to explore the relationships between different kinds of Q-nets. To justify our definition of Q-net, we construct a family of adjunctions for each Lawvere theory explicating the way in which Q-nets present free models of Q in Cat. This gives a functorial description of the operational semantics for an arbitrary category of Q-nets. We show how this can be used to construct the semantics for Petri nets, pre-nets, integer nets, and elementary net systems.

Model categories constitute the major context for doing homotopy theory. More recently, homotopy type theory (HoTT) has been introduced as a context for doing syntactic homotopy theory. In this paper, we show that a slight generalization of HoTT, called interval type theory (⫿TT), allows to define a model structure on the universe of all types, which, through the model interpretation, corresponds to defining a model structure on the category of cubical sets. This work generalizes previous works of Gambino, Garner, and Lumsdaine from the universe of fibrant types to the universe of all types. Our definition of ⫿TT comes from the work of Orton and Pitts to define a syntactic approximation of the internal language of the category of cubical sets. In this paper, we extend the work of Orton and Pitts by introducing the notion of degenerate fibrancy, which allows to define a fibrant replacement, at the heart of the model structure on the universe of all types. All our definitions and propositions have been formalized using the Coq proof assistant.

We consider anti-unification for simply typed lambda terms in theories defined by associativity, commutativity, identity (unit element) axioms and their combinations and develop a sound and complete algorithm which takes two lambda terms and computes their equational generalizations in the form of higher-order patterns. The problem is finitary: the minimal complete set of such generalizations contains finitely many elements. We define the notion of optimal solution and investigate special restrictions of the problem for which the optimal solution can be computed in linear or polynomial time.
