Constructive type theory is an expressive programming language in which both algorithms and proofs can be represented. A limitation of constructive type theory as a programming language is that only terminating programs can be defined in it. Hence, general recursive algorithms have no direct formalisation in type theory since they contain recursive calls that satisfy no syntactic condition guaranteeing termination. In this work, we present a method to formalise general recursive algorithms in type theory. Given a general recursive algorithm, our method is to define an inductive special-purpose accessibility predicate that characterises the inputs on which the algorithm terminates. The type-theoretic version of the algorithm is then defined by structural recursion on the proof that the input values satisfy this predicate. The method separates the computational and logical parts of the definitions and thus the resulting type-theoretic algorithms are clear, compact and easy to understand. They are as simple as their equivalents in a functional programming language, where there is no restriction on recursive calls. Here, we give a formal definition of the method and discuss its power and its limitations.

We present a new model of classical linear logic based on the notion of strong stability that was introduced recently in a work about sequentiality written jointly with Antonio Bucciarelli.

Motivated by recent work on the derivation of labelled transitions and bisimulation congruences from unlabelled reaction rules, we show how to address this problem in the DPO (double-pushout) approach to graph rewriting. Unlike the case with previous approaches, we consider graphs as objects, rather than arrows, of the category under consideration. This allows us to present a very simple way of deriving labelled transitions (called rewriting steps with borrowed context), which integrates smoothly with the DPO approach, has a very constructive nature and requires only a minimum of category theory. The core part of this paper is the proof that the bisimilarity based on graph rewriting with borrowed contexts is a congruence relation. We will also introduce some proof techniques and compare our approach with the derivation of labelled transitions via relative pushouts.

We present a category of locally convex topological vector spaces that is a model of propositional classical linear logic and is based on the standard concept of Köthe sequence spaces. In this setting, the ‘of course’ connective of linear logic has a quite simple structure of a commutative Hopf algebra. The co-Kleisli category of this linear category is a cartesian closed category of entire mappings. This work provides a simple setting in which typed λ-calculus and differential calculus can be combined; we give a few examples of computations.

We introduce an extension of the pure lambda calculus by endowing the set of terms with the structure of a vector space, or, more generally, of a module, over a fixed set of scalars. Moreover, terms are subject to identities similar to the usual pointwise definition of linear combinations of functions with values in a vector space. We then study a natural extension of beta reduction in this setting: we prove it is confluent, then discuss consistency and conservativity over the ordinary lambda calculus. We also provide normalisation results for a simple type system.

This paper tackles the problem of constructing a compact, point-free proof of the associativity of demonic composition of binary relations and its distributivity through demonic choice. In order to achieve this goal, a definition of demonic composition is proposed in which angelic composition is restricted by means of a so-called ‘monotype factor’. Monotype factors are characterised by a Galois connection similar to the Galois connection between composition and factorisation of binary relations. The identification of such a connection is argued to be highly conducive to the desired compactness of calculation.

We consider the problem of mechanically constructing abstract machines from operational semantics, producing intermediate-level specifications of evaluators guaranteed to be correct with respect to the operational semantics. We construct these machines by repeatedly applying correctness-preserving transformations to operational semantics until the resulting specifications have the form of abstract machines. Though not automatable in general, this approach to constructing machine implementations can be mechanized, providing machine-verified correctness proofs. As examples, we present the transformation of specifications for both call-by-name and call-by-value evaluation of the untyped λ-calculus into abstract machines that implement such evaluation strategies. We also present extensions to the call-by-value machine for a language containing constructs for recursion, conditionals, concrete data types, and built-in functions. In all cases, the correctness of the derived abstract machines follows from the (generally transparent) correctness of the initial operational semantic specification and the correctness of the transformations applied.

In order to model the behaviour of open concurrent systems by means of Petri nets, we introduce open Petri nets, a generalisation of the ordinary model where some places, designated as open, represent an interface between the system and the environment. Besides generalising the token game to reflect this extension, we define a truly concurrent semantics for open nets by extending the Goltz–Reisig process semantics of Petri nets. We introduce a composition operation over open nets, characterised as a pushout in the corresponding category, suitable for modelling both interaction through open places and synchronisation of transitions. The deterministic process semantics is shown to be compositional with respect to such a composition operation. If a net $Z_3$ results as the composition of two nets $Z_1$ and $Z_2$, having a common subnet $Z_0$, then any two deterministic processes of $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ that ‘agree’ on the common part, can be ‘amalgamated’ to produce a deterministic process of $Z_3$. Conversely, any deterministic process of $Z_3$ can be decomposed into processes of the component nets. The amalgamation and decomposition operations are shown to be inverse to each other, leading to a bijective correspondence between the deterministic processes of $Z_3$ and the pair of deterministic processes of $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ that agree on the common subnet $Z_0$. Technically, our result is similar to the amalgamation theorem for data-types in the framework of algebraic specification. A possible application field of the proposed constructions and results is the modelling of interorganisational workflows, recently studied in the literature. This is illustrated by a running example.

Opacity is a general language-theoretic framework in which several security properties of a system can be expressed. Its parameters are a predicate, given as a subset of runs of the system, and an observation function, from the set of runs into a set of observables. The predicate describes secret information in the system and, in the possibilistic setting, it is opaque if its membership cannot be inferred from observation.

In this paper, we propose several notions of quantitative opacity for probabilistic systems, where the predicate and the observation function are seen as random variables. Our aim is to measure (i) the probability of opacity leakage relative to these random variables and (ii) the level of uncertainty about membership of the predicate inferred from observation. We show how these measures extend possibilistic opacity, we give algorithms to compute them for regular secrets and observations, and we apply these computations on several classical examples. We finally partially investigate the non-deterministic setting.

We describe a homotopical version of the relational and gluing models of type theory, and generalize it to inverse diagrams and oplax limits. Our method uses the Reedy homotopy theory on inverse diagrams, and relies on the fact that Reedy fibrant diagrams correspond to contexts of a certain shape in type theory. This has two main applications. First, by considering inverse diagrams in Voevodsky's univalent model in simplicial sets, we obtain new models of univalence in a number of (∞, 1)-toposes; this answers a question raised at the Oberwolfach workshop on homotopical type theory. Second, by gluing the syntactic category of univalent type theory along its global sections functor to groupoids, we obtain a partial answer to Voevodsky's homotopy-canonicity conjecture: in 1-truncated type theory with one univalent universe of sets, any closed term of natural number type is homotopic to a numeral.

Linear logic has recently been introduced by Girard as a logic of actions that seems well suited for concurrent computation. In this paper, we establish a systematic correspondence between Petri nets, linear logic theories, and linear categories. Such a correspondence sheds new light on the relationships between linear logic and concurrency, and on how both areas are related to category theory. Categories are here viewed as concurrent systems the objects of which are states, and the morphisms of which are transitions. This is an instance of the Lambek-Lawvere correspondence between logic and category theory that cannot be expressed within the more restricted framework of the Curry-Howard correspondence.

Various Theories of Types are introduced, by stressing the analogy ‘propositions-as-types’: from propositional to higher order types (and Logic). In accordance with this, proofs are described as terms of various calculi, in particular of polymorphic (second order) λ-calculus. A semantic explanation is then given by interpreting individual types and the collection of all types in two simple categories built out of the natural numbers (the modest sets and the universe of ω-sets). The first part of this paper (syntax) may be viewed as a short tutorial with a constructive understanding of the deduction theorem and some work on the expressive power of first and second order quantification. Also in the second part (semantics, §§6–7) the presentation is meant to be elementary, even though we introduce some new facts on types as quotient sets in order to interpret ‘explicit polymorphism’. (The experienced reader in Type Theory may directly go, at first reading, to §§6–8).

Bilattices were introduced and applied by Ginsberg and Fitting for a diversity of applications, such as truth maintenance systems, default inferences and logic programming. In this paper we investigate the structure and properties of a particularly important class of bilattices called interlaced bilattices, which were introduced by Fitting. The main results are that every interlaced bilattice is isomorphic to the Ginsberg-Fitting product of two bounded lattices and that the variety of interlaced bilattices is equivalent to the variety of bounded lattices with two distinguishable distributive elements, which are complements of each other. This implies that interlaced bilattices can be characterized using a finite set of equations. Our results generalize to interlaced bilattices some results of Ginsberg, Fitting and Jónsson for distributive bilattices.

The spatial search problem consists of minimising the number of steps required to find a given site in a network under the restriction that only oracle queries or translations to neighbouring sites are allowed. We propose a quantum algorithm for the spatial search problem on a honeycomb lattice with N sites and torus-like boundary conditions. The search algorithm is based on a modified quantum walk on an hexagonal lattice and the general framework proposed by Ambainis, Kempe and Rivosh (Ambainis et al. 2005) is employed to show that the time complexity of this quantum search algorithm is .

We formalize a partial evaluator for Eugenio Moggi's computational metalanguage. This formalization gives an evaluation-order independent view of binding-time analysis and program specialization, including a proper treatment of call unfolding. It also enables us to express the essence of ‘control-based binding-time improvements’ for let expressions. Specifically, we prove that the binding-time improvements given by ‘continuation-based specialization’ can be expressed in the metalanguage via monadic laws.

In this article, we characterise all continuous posets that are partially metrisable in their Scott topology. We present conditions for pmetrisability, which are both necessary and sufficient, in terms of measurements, domain-theoretic bases and, in a more general setting, in terms of radially convex metrics. These conditions, together with their refinements and generalisations, set a natural hierarchy on the class of partially metrised posets. We locate the class of countably-based continuous dcpos within this hierarchy.

Bar recursion arises in constructive mathematics, logic, proof theory and higher-type computability theory. We explain bar recursion in terms of sequential games, and show how it can be naturally understood as a generalisation of the principle of backward induction that arises in game theory. In summary, bar recursion calculates optimal plays and optimal strategies, which, for particular games of interest, amount to equilibria. We consider finite games and continuous countably infinite games, and relate the two. The above development is followed by a conceptual explanation of how the finite version of the main form of bar recursion considered here arises from a strong monad of selections functions that can be defined in any cartesian closed category. Finite bar recursion turns out to be a well-known morphism available in any strong monad, specialised to the selection monad.

Distributive category theory is the study of categories with two monoidal structures, one of which “distributes” over the other in some manner. When these are the product and coproduct, this distribution is taken to be the law

which asserts that the obvious canonical map has an inverse. A distributive category is here taken to mean a category with finite products and binary coproducts such that this law is satisfied.

In any distributive category the coproduct of the final object with itself, 1 + 1, forms a boolean algebra. Thus, maps into 1 + 1 provide a boolean logic: if each such map recognizes a unique subobject, the category is a recognizable distributive category. If, furthermore, the category is such that these recognizers classify detachable subobjects (coproduct embeddings), it is an extensive distributive category.

Extensive distributive categories can be approached in various ways. For example, recognizable distributive categories, in which coproducts are disjoint or all preinitials are isomorphic, are extensive. Also, a category X having finite products and binary coproducts satisfying the slice equation (due to Schanuel and Lawvere) is extensive. This paper describes a series of embedding theorems. Any distributive category has a full faithful embedding into a recognizable distributive category. Any recognizable distributive category can be "solidified" faithfully to produce an extensive distributive category. Any extensive distributive category can be embedded into a topos.

A peculiar source of extensive distributive categories is the coproduct completion of categories with familial finite products. In particular, this includes the coproduct completion of cartesian categories, which is serendipitously, therefore, also the distributive completion. Familial distributive categories can be characterized as distributive categories for which every object has a finite decomposition into indecomposables.

We introduce pairwise Stone spaces as a bitopological generalisation of Stone spaces – the duals of Boolean algebras – and show that they are exactly the bitopological duals of bounded distributive lattices. The category PStone of pairwise Stone spaces is isomorphic to the category Spec of spectral spaces and to the category Pries of Priestley spaces. In fact, the isomorphism of Spec and Pries is most naturally seen through PStone by first establishing that Pries is isomorphic to PStone, and then showing that PStone is isomorphic to Spec. We provide the bitopological and spectral descriptions of many algebraic concepts important in the study of distributive lattices. We also give new bitopological and spectral dualities for Heyting algebras, thereby providing two new alternatives to Esakia's duality.

We introduce the $\lambda-coiteration$ schema for a distributive law $\lambda$ of a functor $\Functor{T}$ over a functor $\Functor{F}$. Parameterised by $\Functor{T}$ and $\lambda$ it generalises the basic coiteration schema uniquely characterising functions into a final $\Functor{F}$-coalgebra. Furthermore, the same parameters are used to generalise the categorical notion of a bisimulation to that of a $\lambda-bisimulation$, while still giving rise to a proof technique for bisimilarity. We first present a theorem showing the validity of the resulting definition and proof principles for categories with countable coproducts.

Our approach gives a unifying categorical presentation and justification of several extensions of the basic coinduction schemata that have been treated separately before, and some only for specific types of system. As examples, the duals of primitive recursion and course-of-value iteration, which are known extensions of coiteration, arise as instances of our framework.

Moreover, we derive schemata involving auxiliary operators definable with GSOS-style specifications such as addition of streams, regular operators on languages, or parallel and sequential composition of processes. The argument is based on a variation of the theory in the setting of monads and copointed functors. The schemata justify guarded recursive definitions and an up-to-context proof technique for operators of the type mentioned. The latter can ease bisimilarity proofs considerably.
