In a recent paper Srivastav (2) considered the solution of certain two-dimensional mixed boundary-value problems in a wedge-shaped region. The problems were formulated as dual integral equations involving Mellin transforms and were reduced to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. In this paper it will be shown that a closed form solution to the problems treated in (2) may be obtained by elementary means.

In his celebrated paper [7], Martinet showed the equivalence between the infinitesimal versality and the versality for [Ascr ]- and [Kscr ]-morphisms. By using this theorem, he obtained the following Theorem 1·1 which played one of the key roles for the classification of C∞ stable map-germs ([1, 7]).

We show that the proportion of polynomials of degree n over the finite field with q elements, which have a divisor of every degree below n, is given by c q n −1 + O(n −2). More generally, we give an asymptotic formula for the proportion of polynomials, whose set of degrees of divisors has no gaps of size greater than m. To that end, we first derive an improved estimate for the proportion of polynomials of degree n, all of whose non-constant divisors have degree greater than m. In the limit as q → ∞, these results coincide with corresponding estimates related to the cycle structure of permutations.

In this paper we give for any r, n, 0 [les ] r [les ] n, a Quillen's model structure to the category of simplicial groups where the weak equivalences are those morphisms f[bull] such that πq(f[bull]) is an isomorphism for r [les ] q [les ] n. This is carried out by studying the cases r = 0 and n → ∞ previously and, in each one of them, we make explicit some constructions for the associated homotopy theories, such as the cylinder and path objects and the loop and suspension functors, and we also relate the simplicial homotopy relation to the homotopy relation obtained from these structures.

In a recent paper (1), I considered the summability method (D, α) defined, for α > 0, by the sequence-to-sequence transformation

We note that, as is easily verified (and as was pointed out in (1)) a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of (1), and thus for the applicability of (D, α), is that

should converge. It was proved in (1) that, provided that (2) converges, a sequence summable (C, r) for any r > − 1 is necessarily summable (D, α). We now show that we can strengthen this result by replacing Cesàro by Abel summability. Moreover, we can omit the hypothesis that (2) converges provided that we interpret (1) as an Abel sum.

It has been known for a very long time that, under certain conditions rather difficult to specify, the discharge through an ordinary two-electrode vacuum tube containing gas at a low pressure, even when the potential is maintained by a battery of low resistance Storage cells, is intermittent.

In this paper we study a generalized Kummer surface associated to the Jacobian of those complex algebraic curves of genus two which admit an automorphism of order three. Such a curve can always be written as y2 = x6 + 2kx3 + 1 and k2 ╪ 1 is the modular parameter. The automorphism extends linearly to an automorphism of the Jacobian and we show that this extension has a 94 invariant configuration, i.e. it has 9 fixed points and 9 invariant theta curves, each of these curves contains 4 fixed points and 4 invariant curves pass through each fixed point. The quotient of the Jacobian by this automorphism has 9 singular points of type A2 and the 94 configuration descends to a 94 configuration of points and lines, reminiscent to the well-known 166 configuration on the Kummer surface. Our ‘generalized Kummer surface’ embeds in ℙ4 and is a complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic hypersurface. Equations for these hypersurfaces are computed and take a very symmetric form in well-chosen coordinates. This computation is done by using an integrable system, the ‘even master system’.

We study the cohomology of the space of immersed genus g surfaces in a simply-connected manifold. We compute the rational cohomology of this space in a stable range which goes to infinity with g. In fact, in this stable range we are also able to obtain information about torsion in the cohomology of this space, as long as we localise away from (g-1).

Modifications to the Feynman propagation functions Sp and Dp are suggested in order to deal with field theoretic problems involving the presence in the initial and the final states, of free fermions or bosons, having all values of momentum (and energy) within a certain specified range.

The surfaces considered in this note are Jacobians of four quadric forms (“quadrics”) in [4], where one or more of the quadrics are space-pairs. It is believed that, with one exception, they have not been noticed previously; and so little is known of non-rational surfaces in higher space that it seems worth while putting them on record.

Let be an open Riemann surface with finite genus and finite number of boundary components, and let be a closed Riemann surface. An open continuous function from to is termed a (p, q)-map, 0 < q < p, if it has a finite number of branch points and assumes every point in either p or q times, counting multiplicity, with possibly a finite number of exceptions. These comprise the most general class of all non-trivial functions having two valences between and .

The object of this paper is to study the geometry of (p, q)-maps and establish a generalized embedding theorem which asserts that the image surfaces of (p, q)-maps embed in p-fold closed coverings possibly having branch points off the image surfaces.

In (2), Hall considered the question: for what varieties of soluble groups do all finitely generated groups satisfy max-n (the maximal condition for normal subgroups)? He has shown that the variety M of metabelian groups and more generally the variety of Abelian-by-nilpotent-of-class-c (c ≥ 1) groups has this property; whereas on the contrary, there are finitely generated groups in the variety V of centre-by-metabelian groups (i.e. defined by the law [x, y; u, v; z]) which do not satisfy max-n. One naturally raises the question: for what subvarieties of V do all finitely generated groups satisfy max-n?

The proof of Corollary 4⋅3 in our paper [1] is not correct because there is a mistake in the expression given for ∥X* ∧ Y*∥2 on page 374. In fact, the correct expression for this term is

1. Introduction: Let B be a space and let E be an orthogonal (m + 1)-sphere bundle over B with projection p: E → B. Consider the fibre-preserving map T: E → E which is given by the antipodal transformation in each of the fibres. Following (4) we say that E is homotopy-symmetric if there exists a fibre-preserving homotopy of T into the identity map. Since T maps the fibres with degree (– 1)m this condition requires m to be even.

The essential elements in any application of statistical theory are

(1) the set of hypothetical physical states θ which may give rise to the observed phenomena,

(2) the set of all possible observations or samples x,

(3) the set of actions α which may be taken when x is known.

The whole procedure in the common applications can be divided into two parts:

(A) the estimation of θ from the known observation x,

(B) action on the basis of this estimation.

If five spheres in 3-space are such that each pair is inclined at the same non-zero angle θ, then where b1, …, b5 (the ‘bends’ (1) of the spheres) are the reciprocals of their radii. The problem stated in the title is studied for small values of the diffusivity ratio ε and the magnetic force coefficient N with the aim of finding the effect of rotation and the disc conductivity on the magnetic and velocity fields, currents, shear stresses, etc.

Gross and Siebert developed a program for constructing in arbitrary dimension a mirror family to a log Calabi–Yau pair (X, D), consisting of a smooth projective variety X with a normal-crossing anti-canonical divisor D in X. In this paper, we provide an algorithm to practically compute explicit equations of the mirror family in the case when X is obtained as a blow-up of a toric variety along hypersurfaces in its toric boundary, and D is the strict transform of the toric boundary. The main ingredient is the heart of the canonical wall structure associated to such pairs (X, D), which is constructed purely combinatorially, following our previous work with Mark Gross. In the case when we blow up a single hypersurface we show that our results agree with previous results computed symplectically by Aroux–Abouzaid–Katzarkov. In the situation when the locus of blow-up is formed by more than a single hypersurface, due to infinitely many walls interacting, writing the equations becomes significantly more challenging. We provide the first examples of explicit equations for mirror families in such situations.
