Analysis and design of Information Systems (ISs) is the process of eliciting the system's requirements and transforming them into a model that can be used to develop ISs. Analysis and design of Agent-Oriented Information Systems (AOISs) relates to the very same process using the multi-agent paradigm. A comprehensive and rigorous methodology for developing multi-agent systems is lacking (Elammari & Lalonde, 1999; Odell et al., 2000). Most existing multi-agent systems were developed in an ad-hoc manner, and systems developers paid little attention to requirements specification and the analysis process (Treur, 1999a).

The paper has two goals: (a) to provide an overview and (b) to discuss challenges and future research of the field. To address the first goal, we review different methodologies that are suitable for analysing and designing AOIS. This is done by examining, for each methodology, its suitability in supporting the early phases of the software engineering process (specifically analysis and design) as well as its capabilities for modelling agent-oriented systems. To address the second goal, we analyse the limitations of existing approaches, identify critical issues and point to what we think are possible future directions.

It is now more than ten years since researchers in the US Knowledge Sharing Effort envisaged a future where complex systems could be built by combining knowledge and services from multiple knowledge bases and the first agent communication language, KQML, was proposed (Neches et al., 1991). This model of communication, based on speech acts, a declarative message content representation language and the use of explicit ontologies defining the domains of discourse (Genesereth & Ketchpel, 1994), has become widely recognised as having great benefits for the integration of disparate and distributed information sources to form an open, extensible and loosely coupled system. In particular, this idea has become a key tenet in the multi-agent systems research community.

One of the key factors for the acceptance of expert systems in real-world domains is the ability to explain their reasoning (Buchanan & Shortliffe, 1984; Henrion & Druzdzel, 1990). This paper describes the basic properties that characterise explanation methods and reviews the methods developed to date for explanation in Bayesian networks.

By adopting a structured knowledge-level approach, coordination knowledge can be ascribed to groups (societies) of system components (agents) as a whole, rather than to individuals, in order to effectively rationalise complex patterns of interaction within intelligent (multi-agent) systems. Be it either explicitly represented at the symbol-level or hard-coded within specific coordination algorithms, coordination knowledge is instrumented by a wide and heterogeneous variety of coordination models, abstractions and technologies. Coordination knowledge engineering is then about eliciting, modelling and instrumenting coordination knowledge in a principled and effective manner.

In this introductory article, we briefly review two well-known frameworks to conceptualise coordination, then we discuss different dimensions along which coordination models can be classified, and analyse their impact on the design of coordination mechanisms and their supporting coordination knowledge. Finally, we sketch our view on coordination knowledge engineering and introduce the different contributions to this special issue along this line.

The use of methodologies in software and knowledge engineering is very extensive due to their important advantages. In the case of the development of ontologies, until now, several methodological proposals have been presented for building ontologies. Some of these methodologies are designed for building ontologies from scratch or reusing other ontologies without modifying them, concretely, the following cases can be mentioned: the Cyc methodology, the approach proposed by Uschold and King, Grüninger and Fox's methodology, the KACTUS methodology, METHONTOLOGY and the SENSUS methodology. There is even a proposal for re-engineering ontologies, and several proposals for collaborative construction of ontologies.

In this article, we describe the methodologies and check their degree of maturity, contrasting them with respect to the IEEE standard for software development. Before this, we justify to what extent this standard can be used. A conclusion to this study is that there is no completely mature methodological proposal for building ontologies, since there are some important activities and techniques that are missing in all these methodologies. However, all the methodologies do not have the same degree of maturity. In fact, METHONTOLOGY is a very mature methodology. The other conclusion of this article is that, although work to unify proposals can be interesting, maybe several approaches should coexist.

This paper describes an approach to ontology negotiation between agents supporting intelligent information management. Ontologies are declarative (data-driven) expressions of an agent's “world”: the objects, operations, facts and rules that constitute the logical space within which an agent performs. Ontology negotiation enables agents to cooperate in performing a task, even if they are based on different ontologies.

Our objective is to increase the opportunities for “strange agents” – that is, agents not necessarily developed within the same framework or with the same contextual operating assumptions – to communicate in solving tasks when they encounter each other on the web. In particular, we have focused on information search tasks.

We have developed a protocol that allows agents to discover ontology conflicts and then, through incremental interpretation, clarification and explanation, establish a common basis for communicating with each other. We have implemented this protocol in a set of Java classes that can be added to a variety of agents, irrespective of their underlying ontological assumptions. We have demonstrated the use of the protocol, through this implementation, in a test-bed that includes two large scientific archives: NASA's Global Change Master Directory and NOAA's Wind and Sea Index.

This paper presents an overview of different methods for resolving ontology mismatches and motivates the Ontology Negotiation Protocol (ONP) as a method that addresses some problems with other approaches. Much remains to be done. The protocol must be tested in larger and less familiar contexts (for example, numerous archives that have not been preselected) and it must be extended to accommodate additional forms of clarification and ontology evolution.

In this paper, we provide a review of concepts and developments in operating procedure synthesis (OPS), starting from its early development through to its current state. Operating procedure synthesis is a problem in which a set of equipment manipulations and their orderings must be generated to take the process from an initial state to a goal state. While there has been ongoing research for about 30 years in this area, only a few systems have been reported to be industrially deployed. The approach taken in this paper is, first, to describe the problem in general terms; second, to discuss previous work in this area; and, finally, to present ideas and directions for future work.

A multi-agent system architecture for coordination of just-in-time production and distribution is presented. The problem to solve is twofold: first the right amount of resources at the right time should be produced, then these resources should be distributed to the right consumers. In order to solve the first problem, which is hard when the production and/or distribution time is relatively long, each consumer is equipped with an agent that makes predictions of future needs that it sends to a production agent. The second part of the problem is approached by forming clusters of consumers within which it is possible to redistribute resources fast and at a low cost in order to cope with discrepancies between predicted and actual consumption. Redistribution agents are introduced (one for each cluster) to manage the redistribution of resources. The suggested architecture is evaluated in a case study concerning management of district heating systems. Results from a simulation study show that the suggested approach makes it possible to control the trade-off between quality of service and degree of surplus production. We also compare the suggested approach to a reference control scheme (approximately corresponding to the current approach to district heating management), and conclude that it is possible to reduce the amount of resources produced while maintaining the quality of service. Finally, we describe a simulation experiment where the relation between the size of the clusters and the quality of service was studied.

This paper examines a perceived desire amongst software agent application and platform developers to have the ability to send domain-specific objects within inter-agent messages. If this feature is to be supported without departing from the notion that agents communicate in terms of knowledge, it is important that the meaning of such objects be well defined. Using an object-oriented metamodelling approach, the relationships between ontologies and agent communication and content languages in FIPA-style agent systems are examined. It is argued that for use with distributed multi-agent systems, ontologies should describe the nature of object identity and reference for each defined concept, and a UML profile supporting these modelling capabilities is presented. Finally it is shown how, given an ontology in UML, an ontology-specific object-oriented content language can be generated, allowing object structures (viewed in the abstract as UML object diagrams) to be used within message content to represent propositions, definite descriptions or (for classes without identity) value expressions.

Designing realistic multi-agent systems is a complex process, which involves specifying not only the functionality of individual agents, but also the authority relationships and lines of communication existing among them. In other words, designing a multi-agent system refers to designing an agent organisation. Existing methodologies follow a wide variety of approaches to designing agent organisations, but they do not provide adequate support for the decisions involved in moving from analysis to design. Instead, they require designers to make ad hoc design decisions while working at a low level of abstraction.

We have developed RAMASD (Role Algebraic Multi-Agent System Design), a method for semi-automatic design of agent organisations based on the concept of role models as first-class design constructs. Role models represent agent behaviour, and the design of the agent system is done by systematically allocating roles to agents. The core of this method is a formal model of basic relations between roles, which we call role algebra. The semantics of this role-relationships model are formally defined using a two-sorted algebra.

In this paper, we review existing agent system design methodologies to highlight areas where further work is required, describe how our method can address some of the outstanding issues and demonstrate its application to a case study involving telephone repair service teams.

1 Introduction

UKMAS has now been running for six years, in 1996 and 1997 under the heading of FoMAS (Foundations of Multi-Agent Systems) both organised by Michael Luck at Warwick University and then subsequently in its current incarnation, UKMAS, first by Michael Fisher at Manchester Metropolitan University then by Chris Preist at Hewlett Packard Laboratories, Bristol and finally by Mark d'Inverno at St Catherine's College, Oxford in 2000. After the success of the workshop last year at St Catherine's in providing an excellent opportunity for academics and industrialists to come together to discuss current work and directions in the multi-agent systems field, it was decided by the steering committee to use St Catherine's once again as the venue for UKMAS 2001. The workshop was sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and by AgentLink, the European Commission's IST-funded Network of Excellence for Agent-Based Computing.

This survey introduces existing approaches to Agent Communication Languages (ACLs) and particularly Conversation Policies (CPs) which can be viewed as general constraints on the sequence of semantically coherent messages leading to a goal. Then limitations of these CPs are discussed in detail, particularly limitations on flexibility and specification. Finally, ACLs are viewed from the dialectic point of view, and some approaches are introduced in this context: some focusing on commitment-based protocols and others on dialogue-game-based protocols.

This article presents and motivates an extended ontology knowledge model which represents explicitly semantic information about concepts. This knowledge model results from enriching the standard conceptual model with semantic information which precisely characterises the concept's properties and expected ambiguities, including which properties are prototypical of a concept and which are exceptional, the behaviour of properties over time and the degree of applicability of properties to subconcepts. This enriched conceptual model permits a precise characterisation of what is represented by class membership mechanisms and helps knowledge engineers to determine, in a straightforward manner, the meta-properties holding for a concept. Meta-properties are recognised to be the main tool for a formal ontological analysis that allows us to build ontologies with a clean and untangled taxonomic structure.

This enriched semantics can prove useful to describe what is known by agents in a multi-agent system, and might facilitate the use of reasoning mechanisms on the knowledge that instantiates an ontology. These mechanisms can be used to solve ambiguities that can arise when agents with heterogeneous ontologies have to interoperate in order to perform a task.

1 Believable interactive embodied agents

Among the goals of research on autonomous agents one important aim is to build believable interactive embodied agents that are apt to application to friendly interfaces in e-commerce, tourist and service query systems, entertainment (e.g. synthetic actors) and education (pedagogical agents, agents for help and instruction to the hearing impaired).

Event-based systems are developed and used to integrate components in loosely coupled systems. Research and product development have focused so far on efficiency issues but neglected methodological support to build such systems. In this article, the modular design and implementation of an event system is presented which supports scopes and event mappings, two new and powerful structuring methods that facilitate engineering and coordination of components in event-based systems. We give a formal specification of scopes and event mappings within a trace-based formalism adapted from temporal logic. This is complemented by a comprehensive introduction to the event-based style, its benefits and requirements.

This paper focuses on coordination middleware for distributed applications based on active documents and XML technologies. First, the paper introduces the main concepts underlying active documents and XML, and identifies the strict relations between active documents and mobile agents (“document agents”). Then, the paper goes into details about the problem of defining a suitable middleware architecture to support coordination activities in applications including active documents and mobile agents, by specifically focusing on the role played by XML technologies in that context. A simple taxonomy is introduced to characterise coordination middleware architectures depending on the way they exploit XML documents in supporting coordination. The characteristics of several middleware infrastructures are then surveyed and evaluated, also with the help of a simple example scenario in the area of distributed workflow management. This analysis enables us to identify the advantages and the shortcomings of the different approaches, and the basic requirements of a middleware for XML-centric applications.

1 Opening

PKDD 2001, the 5th European Conference on Principles of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD), was held in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, this year (Monday 3 to Thursday 7 September), and co-located with the 12th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML 2001). The proceedings comprised two volumes, one for PKDD (De Raedt & Siebes, 2001) and one for ECML (De Raedt & Flach, 2001); and form part of the Springer Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. The conference was held in the University buildings in the centre of the old town. Freiburg and the surrounding area were for many years part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and thus the university was described to us as being one of the oldest Austrian Universities.

Ontologies are becoming increasingly important because they provide the critical semantic foundation for many rapidly expanding technologies such as software agents, e-commerce and knowledge management (McGuinness, 2002). The Unified Modelling Language (UML)1 has been widely adopted by the software engineering community and its scope is broadening to include more diverse modelling tasks. This paper discusses the recent convergence of UML and ontologies and suggests some possible future directions.

The IEEE Standard Upper Ontology (IEEE, 2001) is an effort to create a large, general-purpose, formal ontology. The ontology will be an open standard that can be reused for both academic and commercial purposes without fee, and it will be designed to support additional domain-specific ontologies. The effort is targeted for use in automated inference, semantic interoperability between heterogeneous information systems and natural language processing applications. The effort was begun in May 2000 with an e-mail discussion list, and since then there have been over 6000 e-mail messages among 170 subscribers. These subscribers include representatives from government, academia and industry in various countries. The effort was officially approved as an IEEE standards project in December 2000. Recently a successful workshop was held at IJCAI 2001 to discuss progress and proposals for this project (IJCAI, 2001).
