We consider variational properties of some numerical invariants, measuring convergence of local horizontal sections, associated to differential modules on polyannuli over a nonarchimedean field of characteristic 0. This extends prior work in the one-dimensional case of Christol, Dwork, Robba, Young, et al. Our results do not require positive residue characteristic; thus besides their relevance to the study of Swan conductors for isocrystals, they are germane to the formal classification of flat meromorphic connections on complex manifolds.

Let C be a family of curves over a non-singular variety S. We study algebraic cycles on the relative symmetric powers C[n] and on the relative Jacobian J. We consider the Chow homology CH*(C[∙]/S) := ⊕n CH*(C[n]/S) as a ring using the Pontryagin product. We prove that CH*(C[∙]/S) is isomorphic to CH*(J/S)[t]〈u〉, the PD-polynomial algebra (variable: u) over the usual polynomial ring (variable: t) over CH*(J/S). We give two such isomorphisms that over a general base are different. Further we give precise results on how CH*(J/S) sits embedded in CH*(C[∙]/S) and we give an explicit geometric description of how the operators and ∂u act. This builds upon the study of certain geometrically defined operators Pi,j (a) that was undertaken by one of us.

Our results give rise to a new grading on CH*(J/S). The associated descending filtration is stable under all operators [N]*, and [N]* acts on as multiplication by Nm. Hence, after − ⊗ ℚ this filtration coincides with the one coming from Beauville's decomposition. The grading we obtain is in general different from Beauville's.

Finally, we give a version of our main result for tautological classes, and we show how our methods give a simple geometric proof of some relations obtained by Herbaut and van der Geer–Kouvidakis, as later refined by one of us.

Since any function f(x1, … , xm) from {0, 1}m in a finite field k can be uniquely written as a multilinear polynomial, we associate to it its inverse dual f*(x1, … , xm) expressing the coefficients of this canonical polynomial. We show that the unlikely hypothesis that the class P(k) of sequences of functions of polynomial complexity be closed by duality is equivalent to the well-known hypothesis P = #pP, where p is the characteristic of k.

In a first section we expose the result in the frame of classical Boolean calculus, that is, when k = ℤ/2ℤ. In a second section we treat the general case, introducing a notion of transformation whose duality is a special case; the transformations form a group isomorphic to GL2(k); among them, we distinguish the benign transformations, which have a weak effect on the complexity of functions; we show that, in this respect, all the non-benign transformations have the same power of harmfulness.

In the third section we consider functions from km into k, and in the last, after introducing #P = P to the landscape, we compare our results with those of Guillaume Malod, concerning the closure by ‘coefficient-function’ of various classes of complexity of sequences of polynomial defined in Valiant's way.

We describe equations of the universal torsors over del Pezzo surfaces of degrees from 2 to 5 over an algebraically closed field in terms of the equations of the corresponding homogeneous space G/P. We also give a generalization for fields that are not algebraically closed.

Igusa varieties are smooth varieties in positive characteristic p which are closely related to Shimura varieties and Rapoport–Zink spaces. One motivation for studying Igusa varieties is to analyse the representations in the cohomology of Shimura varieties which may be ramified at p. The main purpose of this work is to stabilize the trace formula for the cohomology of Igusa varieties arising from a PEL datum of type (A) or (C). Our proof is unconditional thanks to the recent proof of the fundamental lemma by Ngô, Waldspurger and many others.

An earlier work of Kottwitz, which inspired our work and proves the stable trace formula for the special fibres of PEL Shimura varieties with good reduction, provides an explicit way to stabilize terms at ∞. Stabilization away from p and ∞ is carried out by the usual Langlands–Shelstad transfer as in work of Kottwitz. The key point of our work is to develop an explicit method to handle the orbital integrals at p. Our approach has the technical advantage that we do not need to deal with twisted orbital integrals or the twisted fundamental lemma.

One application of our formula, among others, is the computation of the arithmetic cohomology of some compact PEL-type Shimura varieties of type (A) with non-trivial endoscopy. This is worked out in a preprint of the author's entitled ‘Galois representations arising from some compact Shimura varieties’.

A factorization formula for certain automorphisms of a Poisson algebra associated with a quiver is proved, which involves framed versions of moduli spaces of quiver representations. This factorization formula is related to wall-crossing formulae for Donaldson–Thomas type invariants of Kontsevich and Soibelman.

The statement of Theorem 2.7.6 in the indicated paper is incorrect. For instance, if m = 0 (i.e., the base field K contains no additional derivations), it is inconsistent with Theorem 2.7.4 due to the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic generic radii of convergence. Theorems 2.7.12 and 2.7.13 are incorrect for similar reasons.
