1 Here is it not time to raise a protest against the widespread statement that Herodotus I, 94 and Pliny NH iii, 14, 113 prove the identity of the Villanovans with the Umbrians ? Herodotus seems to refer to the historical Umbria on the Adriatic coast, and Pliny probably has in mind Etruria Umbrica, whose capitals, Perugia and Cortona, preserved the memory of their Umbrian origin. Neither passage necessarily involves the Villanovan areas at all.
