An open clinic makes provision for the psychological treatment of children and parents in the presence of other parents and individuals.

It is a matter of fact that love represents an indispensable function in the development of the personality. It is true for the peculiar relation arising out of human contact as well as for the critical processes which passion evokes in our psychic life. The importance of this function has increased concomitantly with our constantly growing consciousness. Analytical psychology has occupied itself at various times with the problem of the development of the personality through love—in a certain sense we might say that this is one of its basic ideas. It is therefore all the more remarkable that the literature offers nowhere a clear expression of this idea. In any event the decisive conclusions to be drawn from the assumption of this conception have never been formulated, much less accepted.

Stage fright is according to our present nomenclature and present-day knowledge, a neurosis belonging to the group of diseases caused by a profession. It may be looked upon as the most classical, sovereign human neurosis. The phenomena of. stage fright demonstrate very well a long series of psycho-vegetative, psycho-organic and psycho-somatic reciprocal effects and correlations. Besides vasomotor, vagotonic and sympatheticotonic relations, serological and humoral alterations, there is also a radical change of matter and various peculiarities of the glandular function associated with this apparently innocuous kind of neurosis which is often treated so lightly. Stage fright as well as other occupational neuroses, oratorical troubles, the “esprit d'escalier”, aphasic disturbances in speaking, stuttering, stammering, etc., which were considered hitherto as “nervous”, “fictitious” functional diseases deprived of an organic basis, cause in every-day life grievous sufferings, and form cultural problems which are too grave to be overlooked.

Next to its physiological function, every organ of our body has still another function, a psychological one. Having mentioned the psychological significance of the circulatory apparatus in general, and the psycho-physiological and psycho-pathological significance of the heart, the author summarizes the results of investigations into the relationship between psychical processes and the vascular system of the heart with normal people and with patients both waking and in hypnosis. The structure of a man's personality and his temperamental qualities play a part in his susceptibility to the contents of psychical experiences and in his psycho-physiological way of reacting.

A cerebral-pathological approach to the hysterical syndrome is presented in contrast to the biological and psychological approach. Hysterical motor and sensory disturbances are discussed, and the great group of the so-called organ hysterias are considered in the light of a typical case of hysterical visual disorders.

The methods of analytic psychotherapy, owing to its intuitive pre-occupation with allegory, have always shown a close analogy to religious experience. Psycho-therapeutic re-orientation leads via disturbing experiences, in the course of which hitherto undreamt-of unconscious psychic relationships become apparent, to the expansion of the conscious mind of the patient. There is a psychic catharsis. This process has clear analogies with the initiation experi ences of the ancient mysteries. In the course of psychotherapy things are evaluated from their beginnings in their relations to reality, and the effect of this is to re-establish normal contact with reality. One plunges into the psyche, however, only as far as is necessary to attain this end.
