He report on a series of observations of Cyg X-2 obtained with EXOSAT in September 1983 at five phases in a single orbital cycle (P = 9.8 days, see Cowley et al. 1979). Here we present spectral data obtained with the Argon counters of the Medium. Energy experiment (HE) (see Turner et al. 1981), together with the search of Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in high tine resolution data.

We present preliminary results of the EXOSAT X-ray observations and quasisimultaneous and simultaneous optical photometry of the X-ray source EX0020528+1454.8 = 1E0205+149 found independently as an serendipitous source both with Einstein and EXOSAT satellites. The optical counterpart is a pair of dMe stars, Our results indicate that the object is variable both in X-rays and optical wavelenghts, and probably belongs to dMe flare stars.

The X-ray heating light curve of the binary X-ray source 4U2129+47/V1727 Cgy is synthesized. A reliable solution is obtained only after accounting for the influence of an accretion disk. Model parameters achieved by the best fit are discussed. The solution is also discussed in the context of an extended OFF state.

A model for a symbiotic system is presented which is not spherically symmetrical. The system consists of a cool, mass losing giant and a hot star. The stellar wind from the cool star is radiatively ionized by the hot companion, and the resulting nebular lines are emitted mainly close to the cool star. Due to the elliptical orbit, the line fluxes change with time because of the varying separation of the stars. The line profiles vary from symmetrical to asymmetrical, depending on the angle between the line of sight and the axis of symmetry. The calculated line profiles are compared with observed UV lines of the symbiotic star HBV 475.

Periodic variations of emission line intensities and radial velocities in three S-type symbiotic stars: BF Cyg, CI Cyg and AX Per are presented and discussed. The behavior of emission lines is different in these objects and suggests that significant differences in physical conditions and geometry may occur in these seemingly similar systems.

Variations of the UV continuum have been analyzed. The observed UV continuum may be reproduced by a superposition of a Kurucz model atmosphere (log g=2), Teff ~ 8500 - 15000 K) and optically thin hydrogen bound-free and free-free emission (Te ~ 1000 K). The temperature of the Kurucz atmosphere is the lowest at the maximum of brightness. The flat minimum in the UV integrated flux was observed in May-October 1985.

Some arguments for the explanation of the spectroscopic and photometric behavior of CH Cyg in terms of an eclipsing binary with P=5700 days, consisting of M6 III star and an accreting white dwarf, are presented. Physical and geometrical parameters of the system have been estimated and discussed.

Rapid variations of the radial velocities of absorption components of Ti II lines in CH Cyg are presented. The periods of these variations are determined to 1.89 and 41.07 days in 1982. The variations are interpreted through oscilliations in the mass transfer from the M component onto the accretion disk of the companion during periastron passage.

Photometric observations of the symbiotic star EG and confirm that the binary system is eclipsing. The epoch of primary minimum is computed. The new period 474 days instead of 470 days is estimated by a comparison of line profiles of Balmer lines taken in 1967–69 and 1982–84. The new ephemeris is

The mass accretion process onto the hot component of AG Dra and its explosive phenomena are discussed. The hot component seems to be a massive white dwarf (M > 1 M⊙). The mass accretion rate is estimated to be about 10−7M⊙/year. Many properties of the explosive phenomena agree with those of mild hydrogen flashes expected from this rapid mass accretion.

We describe the first X-ray monitoring of a symbiotic star during phases of enhanced activity. AG Dra is a Pop II object with a composite spectrum, characterized by a cool K-type component, prominent high ionization emission lines and a strong UV continuum which is attributed to a hot dwarf companion. Periodic variability of the UV radiation during minimum could be attributed to the orbital motion of the system. In April 1980 HEAO-2 detected an intense, soft X-ray flux from AG Dra, stronger than in other symbiotic stars. After one major outburst of November 1980, which continued until 1983, two more outbursts occurred in February 1985 and January 1986, and coordinated X-ray (EXOSAT) and ultraviolet (IUE) observations were organized to study the behaviour of AG Dra during different activity phases. EXOSAT observations made during decline after the 1985 outburst, revealed a weak X-ray flux in the Thin Lexan filter of the Low Energy dedtector. Observations made during minimum, in June and November 1985, at phases 0.22 and 0.50 of the UV light curve, disclosed the presence of an intense X-ray flux, which was not occulted in November. AG Dra was again observed with EXOSAT in February 1986 when the stellar luminosity was still at maximum. No X-ray flux was detected, in spite of the prominent, high ionization UV spectrum observed with IUE.

A detailed discussion of the X-ray and ultraviolet results on AG Dra in the light of possible models is in progress.

Satellite observations, from Einstein, IUE, and IRAS, have been combined with ground-based observations to derive the quiescent energy distribution of the symbiotic star AG Draconis. A detailed comparison is made between the combined observations and various steady-state composite models, including blackbody accretion disks.

Coordinated IUE and EXOSAT observations of the symbiotic Mira R Aqr, made in June and December 1985, at phases 0.0 and 0.5 of the Mira light curve, are discussed. A weak X-ray flux has been for the first time unambiguously detected without any significant change with the Mira light curve. Also the UV spectrum of the central object has not varied, while the presence of high ionization lines (NV and HeII) in the spectrum of the jet-like feature is confirmed. The data are discussed in the light of a model in which the jet is preexisting material illuminated by the recently increased X and UV radiation from the inner edge of the accretion disk around the degenerate companion of the Mira primary.

The profiles of the emission lines of Hα, HeI 587 6 and HeII 5411 in the spectrum of AG Peg obtained in the minimum of 1985 are described. The light curves in UBVRI system are presented. No indication for the presence of a magnetic field exceeding the error of observations (200 gauss) has been found.

Optical spectrum of AS 201 is presented: this object shows emission lines of moderate excitation (exc.class 5) and absorption spectrum of a G2III star. For the interstellar extinction and distance the values c=0.45 and d=1.5 kpc were estimated. The hot components of AS 2Ol, Cn 1–1 and M 1–2 are located on the Harman-Seaton sequence in the region of evolved central stars of PN. It is suggested that the hot components of some SS are evolved nuclei of PN; high el.density of their nebulae may be explained due to mass loss from the respective cool stars of the binaries.

The close binary system Am CVn consists of two helium white dwarf stars in close orbit. Strong flickering in the optical light curve and the observed spin-up in the rotation period indicate that mass transfer takes place (Solheim et al., 1984). The optical spectrum shows broad helium absorption lines (Robinson and Faulkner, 1975) sometimes partly filled in by emission (Voikhanskaya, 1982). The optical spectrum shows no sign of hydrogen, and the line profiles are interpreted as due to an accretion disk of intermediate angle of inclination with a temperature of the order of 20.000 K (Robinson and Faulkner, 1975). Another possibility is direct accretion onto a magnetized BD white dwarf (Voikhanskaya, 1982). In the latter case a magnetic field B ≃ 106 to 109 gauss is needed. Voikhanskaya also reports significant changes in the absorption line profiles from 1978 to 1980.

Kitamura sensei, ladies and gentlemen: the remarks which follow will be the last communication by which our colloquium on cataclysmic variables is to be brought to its conclusion; and I appreciate the invitation of its organizing committee to use the remaining time we have together in the congenial atmosphere created for us at Bamberg, in an attempt at a summary of what we heard here in the past few days from several hundred colleagues who gathered here from many parts of the world - to survey the present state of our subject, and consider together where do we go from here. The time for this purpose makes it impossible to touch upon all exciting developments in the field of cataclysmic variables reported at Bamberg in the past few days; but certain general features have emerged from the programme of our colloquium which it may be appropriate to recall.
