Structural mapping from the Flat Belt into the Tummel Steep Belt of the Dalradian Supergroup of the Central Highlands provides evidence for a new interpretation of the relationship between the two belts and their evolution. The open upright D3 major folds of the Flat Belt intensify into the Steep Belt and are responsible for the steeper dips. These D3 folds refold four newly recognized D2 major folds. It is the recognition of the interference of these two sets of folds that leads to the radically revised structural interpretation presented here. A reconstruction of the pre-D3 structural history shows that the stack of major D2 folds, on the lower limb of the Tay Nappe, originally verged to the northwest, as did three D1 fold-pairs.

A model is proposed for the D2 deformation in a transpressional setting, simplified as partitioned into two sub-horizontal zones. The lower zone is represented by the pure-shear-dominated Tummel Belt with extension parallel to the regional orogenic trend; the upper zone is represented by the simple-shear-dominated Flat Belt where extension is perpendicular to that trend. The curvature of the minor D2 fold hinges supports a more refined model of smoothly continuous partitioning of transpressive deformation between the basement and high-level, southeast-propagating nappes above the Flat Belt.

This paper evaluates four different methods that have been proposed for the estimation of the detachment depth beneath detachment folds. Guidelines are presented in order to use the most suitable method in a particular region deformed by detachment folds. These guidelines are constructed considering the assumptions of each method, the influence of different parameters on the estimation of the detachment depth (folding mechanisms, cross-sectional area variations, position and orientation of the regional datum, number of stratigraphic horizons, bed length and thickness, dip and position of the bounding lines, initial thickness of the ductile unit, single anticlines or fold trains) and the available data (ductile unit thickness, regional datum, detachment depth). Moreover, a new, simple method based on two previous methods is presented. The advantages of this new method are that the calculations are extremely simple and it uses information from more than one stratigraphic horizon; therefore, it does not depend strongly on the accuracy of the data at one level. The precision of the proposed methods is tested by their application to a number of natural and experimental single anticlines and fold trains. It appears that better predictions are obtained when analysing a complete detachment fold train than when dealing with a single detachment anticline. The reason might be that ductile material flow beneath the folds along the cross-sectional plane is taken into account when dealing with a long-enough cross section. We also suggest some hypotheses concerning what the shape and dimensions of the detachment folds indicate about the detachment depth in those cases where insufficient data are available to apply the methods proposed.

Granitoids in the Gabal El-Urf area in Eastern Egypt consist of a monzogranite pluton, belonging to the Younger Granite province, emplaced in granodioritic rocks. Whole rock Rb–Sr dating indicate ages of 650±95 Ma and 600±11 Ma for the granodiorites and monzogranites, respectively. The granodiorites (65–70% SiO2) are calc-alkaline and metaluminous with low Rb/Sr, Th and Nb contents, moderate enrichment in the LILE (K2O, Rb, and Ba) and display most of the chemical and field characteristics of syn-to late-tectonic I-type granitoids described elsewhere in the Arabian–Nubian Shield. The monzogranites (72–77% SiO2) are metaluminous to mildly peraluminous, highly fractionated and depleted in Al2O3, MgO, CaO, TiO2, Sr and Ba with corresponding enrichment in Rb, Nb, Zr, and Y. They can be correlated with the undeformed post-orogenic granites in the Arabian–Nubian Shield that chemically resemble A-type granites emplaced in extensional settings. The mineralogical and chemical variations within the granodiorites and monzogranites are consistent with their evolution by fractional crystallization. The granodiorites have a low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7024) and high ∈Nd values (+6.9–+7.3) and are significantly different from those (initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio=0.7029, ∈Nd values=+5.2–+5.8) of the monzogranites. These data suggest a predominant mantle derivation for both granite types and demonstrate that they originated from different source materials.

The granodiorite melt was most probably generated through vapour-saturated partial melting of an early Neoproterozoic depleted mafic lower-crust reservoir due to crustal thickening associated with orogenic compression and/or arc magma underplating. The mineralogical and geochemical data of the A-type monzogranites are consistent with their derivation as a residual granitic liquid from a LILE-enriched mafic magma through crystal-liquid fractionation of plagioclase, amphibole, Fe–Ti oxides and apatite. The parental mafic magma was originated in the upper mantle due to crustal thinning associated with extension in the late stage of the Neoproterozoic crustal evolution of north-eastern Egypt.

An episode of remarkable biotic, climatic, sea-level and facies changes took place during the late Viruan (Caradoc) epoch in the Baltoscandian area. We studied the carbon isotopic composition of carbonate sediments from this period. Data on the stable carbon isotopic composition of whole-rock carbonates from three south Estonian core sections, together with those on ostracode, distribution are presented. In two core sections, a positive δ13C shift of 2 ‰ was revealed in the upper part of the Keila Stage (mid-Caradoc). The comparison of isotope and ostracode data in the sections suggested the occurrence of a gap of late Keilan age in the marginal area of the basin equivalent to the North Estonian Confacies Belt. The beginning of the excursion approximately coincided with climatic and sea-level changes in the shallow shelf area. The peak of the late Keilan excursion preceded the biotic crises and maximum black shale accumulation in the Baltoscandian palaeobasin. An approximately synchronous carbon isotopic event has been reported from North America, referring to a possible global oceanographic event in the Caradoc epoch. Although the positive carbon isotopic excursion and related environmental events of the late Keilan age have some unique features, they show more similarities to the end-Ordovician and Silurian events, characterized by oceanic change from stratified state to thermohaline circulation state, than to warm anoxic events related to eustatic sea-level rise.

Wood-grained chert is an unusual type of banded nodular chert that is characterized by alternating thin dark-coloured bands and thicker light-coloured bands, which give the chert a texture reminiscent of the growth rings of wood. The wood-grained texture found in some chert nodules in the Portland Limestone Formation of southern England is the result of variations in the concentration of calcite inclusions within the chert. Light-coloured bands contain more abundant calcite inclusions than adjoining darker coloured chert bands. The Portland Limestone wood-grained cherts formed by the late diagenetic replacement of a highly compacted carbonate sand, in which abundant siliceous sponge spicules were the silica source. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope data (δ18O=27.0 to 29.3‰; δ18O=−71 to −91‰ V-SMOW), indicate that either chert formation or, more likely, the opal-CT to quartz transformation, occurred in meteoric or mixed marine and meteoric pore waters at temperatures in the range of 20–60°C. The wood-grained texture likely formed by a self-organization process. A feedback mechanism is proposed for the origin of the texture in which calcium and carbonate ions released during the replacement of the host limestone resulted in calcite supersaturation along the boundaries of growing chert nodule. Calcite inclusion-rich chert bands formed within the calcite supersaturated zone and inclusion-poor bands formed outside of the calcite-supersaturated zone. Wood-grained chert provides another example of how the coupling of reaction and transport can produce repetitive patterns in otherwise unordered sediments or rock.

A newly measured and sampled section in the upper part of the early Neoproterozoic Visingsö Group, south central Sweden, has been investigated for its stable carbon and oxygen isotope geochemistry. The 30 m-thick succession crops out on the southeastern shore of Lake Vättern, close to the village of Boeryd, and consists mainly of black mudstones with carbonate lenses, some of which have been dolomitized. High H/C ratios of the kerogen preserved in the investigated succession indicate that organic carbon generally is well preserved. The observed δ13Corg values are comparable to previously observed Neoproterozoic organic carbon values, with the exception of a few exceptionally 13C-depleted kerogens, with δ13Corg[ges ]−41.1 ‰. The latter are interpreted to be the result of fermentative bacterial reworking of sedimentary organic matter. The Boeryd carbonates display an unusual array of heavy δ18O values (with δ18O[les ]+3.3 ‰) that are interpreted as reflecting deposition in an arid climate. Geochemical data indicate that the carbonates have been diagenetically altered, but only to a limited extent, and a range of δ13Ccarb values from +2.4 to +4.7 ‰ appears to be representative of the primary seawater composition for the time of deposition of the upper Visingsö unit. Positive carbonate isotope values are typical for lower Neoproterozoic, pre-Varangerian successions elsewhere. The C isotope values obtained from the Boeryd section, although not conclusive by themselves, are consistent with the formerly biostratigraphically and radiometrically inferred early Neoproterozoic age for the upper Visingsö Group.

Clastic infills of fractures (here termed clastic veins) in basement rocks immediately underlying sedimentary cover sequences can be used to date fault movements if these demonstrably occurred at the time of infilling or prior to the lithification of the entrained clastic material. This allows reconstruction of the syn-rifting palaeostress system using stress inversion techniques. During Riphean intracontinential rifting of Laurentia, the Torridonian Stoer Group sediments of northwest Scotland were deposited in half-graben basins controlled by faults, e.g. the Coigach and Clachtoll faults. At Clachtoll, northeast–southwest oblique sinistral normal faulting in the underlying basement is associated with extensive development of shear, hybrid and tensile clastic veins filled with Stoer Group sediment, infilled and deformed prior to sediment lithification. Clastic veins initially formed by gravitational infilling of sediment from above, followed by tectonically-driven, forceful hydraulic injection of fluidized sand into new fractures and reactivated pre-existing basement faults. Palaeostress axes, determined from fault lineation data and tensile fracture extension directions in the Clachtoll Fault zone, indicate west-northwest–east-southeast directed extension during rifting. On a regional scale, this implies oblique-dextral extension on the north- to north-northeast-trending Coigach Fault during Stoer Group deposition. Similar orientations, age relationships and kinematics have been obtained from pre-Torridon Group fault arrays developed in the Lewisian basement near Gairloch and Loch Maree. Overall, the faulting patterns reflect a three-dimensional strain (k≠1) formed by east-southeast–west-northwest-directed extension during deposition of the Stoer Group. More speculatitively, asymmetric density patterns of sinistral and dextral faults may indicate that rifting occurred in a regional zone of broadly north–south-oriented dextral transtension.

Fully temperate freshwater, brackish and marine sediments overlying Anglian till and glacilacustrine sediments in the Nar Valley area of northwest Norfolk, UK, have been attributed to the Middle Pleistocene Hoxnian temperate stage on palynological grounds, and basal peats associated with this sequence have been recently correlated with oxygen isotope stage 9 on the basis of a series of 230Th/238U dates (mean 317±14 ka). At Tottenhill these sediments (Nar Valley Freshwater Beds, Nar Valley Clay) underlie a deltaic complex attributed to the Wolstonian ice margin. The lithostratigraphical relations between the major formations in the Nar Valley, and the pollen stratigraphy of the fully temperate sequence, are very similar to the Pleistocene sequence in the Inner Silver Pit area of the southern North Sea, and correlation has been proposed between the successions described from these two localities. However, the Inner Silver Pit sequence has yielded aminostratigraphic data consistent with isotopic stage 11.

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and foraminiferal amino-acid determinations have been investigated from the Nar Valley Clay in order to test further the palaeoenvironmental setting of the sequence and to help resolve the age of the sequence and correlation with the Inner Silver Pit interglacial. The foraminiferal assemblages support previous sedimentological and palaeontological evidence for a transgressive tendency within this sequence. Multiple isoleucine epimerization determinations on Ammonia beccarii and Aubignyna perlucida from five levels within the Nar Valley Clay give mean aIle/Ile ratios of 0.135 and 0.111, respectively. The A. beccarii ratios are much lower than mean aIle/Ile ratios on equivalent species from the interglacial sequence in the Inner Silver Pit (upper Sand Hole Formation), which are close to 0.2, and the two datasets fail to overlap at the 1σ level. The new aminostratigraphic ratios indicate correlation of the Nar Valley Clay with oxygen isotope stage 9, and therefore support the pre-existing 230Th/238U data.

These results suggest that two temperate stages of Hoxnian palynological affinity are present in the Quaternary record of East Anglia and the southern North Sea basin, a conclusion consistent with independent new U-series data from other Hoxnian sites in East Anglia. An alternative model in which the amino-acid ratios are explained as a function of different post-depositional thermal histories, related to length of cover by ice and water, is discussed but considered unlikely. The conclusions have important implications for the timing and number of glacial events in and around the southern North Sea basin, and help to resolve discrepancies in relative sea-level histories and biogeography in temperate sequences hitherto accommodated within a single stage.

The Ordovician sedimentary and igneous rocks of the English Lake District host a widespread suite of epigenetic metalliferous veins dominated by copper sulphides with abundant arsenopyrite, pyrite and accessory galena and sphalerite. New field and microstructural evidence from examples of this suite at Coniston, Wasdale, Honister, Newlands and Borrowdale shows that the veins were strongly cleaved during the Early Devonian (Emsian) Acadian orogenic event. The principal evidence includes the continuity of wall-rock cleavage fabrics with pressure solution seams in the veins and consistently orientated cleavage through enclosed, rotated wall-rock fragments and chloritic mats. There is also widespread complex intracrystalline deformation in quartz, cataclasis of arsenopyrite and pyrite, fracturing and/or buckling of bladed hematite, and growth of quartz or mica-fibre strain fringes. Chalcopyrite was partially or totally remobilized, enabling it to migrate along quartz crystal boundaries, and invade brecciated pyrite. Previous K–Ar Early Devonian age determinations for the mineralization are considered to have been reset. The pre-Acadian age of this mineralization, its style and relationship to the volcanic rocks permits a genetic link with the final phases of Caradoc magmatism.

Two metabentonite suites occur within the Wenlock limestones and marls of Gotland, one within the Slite Formation (M. belophorus to the C. ellesae biozones) and the other in the Mulde Formation (G. nassa–M. dubius Biozone). Their geochemical characteristics based on rare-earth element (REE) distributions in apatite crystals separated from the metabentonites suggest origins from three separate volcanic sources. One of these sources has an alkaline affinity, reflected in relatively high levels of Th, Nb and Zr, which suggests that it may have lain over thickening continental crust during the waning stages of the closure of the Tornquist Sea, while the other two represent calc-alkaline magmas. The source of the volcanic ash is placed some 400 km to the southwest of Gotland, on the Tornquist–Teysseyre Zone, which is the northernmost expression of the Trans-European Suture Zone. Distinctive differences in REE distribution in apatite from these metabentonites should assist in future correlation studies in Wenlock stratigraphy, both within the Baltic region and further afield.

Deep-sea fan development is generally thought to be controlled by a combination of changes in sea level, the shape and size of the basin in which the fans are growing, and the nature of the source area. The Early Miocene evolution of the eastern Mediterranean involved significant accumulation of deep-water clastic sediment in which the importance of each of these controlling factors can be evaluated. The deep-water clastic system located in the Adana Basin has been studied in detail. Two contemporaneous, small, radial, sand-rich submarine fans (one in the west and one in the east) exhibiting different scales, fan types and styles of deposition have been recognized within the Cingöz turbidite sequence of the northern Adana Basin in southern Turkey. Sedimentological studies indicate that the fans were controlled externally by tectonics and relative eustatic sea-level fall during late Serravallian time, in combination with the nature of the source area to the north. The internal architectural stacking patterns and external geometry of the two fan systems were strongly affected by the interaction of local tectonics and turbidity current pathways, including a major topographic confinement to the southeast that forced a vertical aggradation of the eastern fan and an east–west elongation of the western fan. This paper describes a classic example of a well-exposed deep-water clastic system where (1) tectonically driven sea-floor topography, (2) syn-sedimentary tectonism and (3) eustatic rise in sea level, are the primary controls on its development.

The degree of isoleucine epimerization in the benthic foraminiferal species Elphidium excavatum and Bulimina marginata have been measured in four boreholes, penetrating marine interglacial beds, from northern Jutland. The results of these analyses are compiled with results obtained from other sites in Denmark and the North Sea region, and four aminozones (AZs) have been erected. AZ1 (aIle/Ile < 0.05) include the Late Weichselian and the Holocene part of the record. AZ2 (0.08–0.12) includes samples of last interglacial age. AZ3 (0.14–0.16) includes samples from sites that have been previously correlated with the Holsteinian, and marine isotope stage 7 age for this zone is suggested. An age close to 400±100 ka is assigned to AZ4 (0.21–0.26). AZ4 is recorded in corings at Skagen and Nørre Lyngby, and includes the here defined Skagerrak Interglacial, which is tentatively correlated with marine isotope stage 11.

The Skagerrak Interglacial sediments are characterized by boreal lusitanian benthic foraminiferal faunas evidencing strong input of Atlantic water to the North Sea. These faunas are replaced by assemblages indicating cooler conditions at least twice during this period. The sedimentation pattern in northern Jutland during this interglacial seems to be different from the sedimentation regimes in the same area at the classical Eemian sites and during the Holocene, which were characterized by large sediment input from the Jutland Current. This difference may be attributed to a change in the geometry of the sedimentary basin through the later part of the Quaternary, which is a result of repeated periods of intense erosion in the confluence area of the Norwegian Channel ice stream. A strong influx of Atlantic water to the North Sea during stage 11 has been suggested earlier, based on records from the Devil's Hole area. However, the correlation of this event to the classic biostratigraphic based schemes of northwest Europe is still problematic.

The Silurian succession of North Galway is relatively well constrained in terms of environmental analysis and, in its lower half, palaeontologically. The initiation of a late Llandovery marine transgression can be demonstrated over fluviatile red sandstones. The deposition of shallow-water conglomerates at the base of a turbidite sequence within the succession indicates the long-lived presence of a channel system that was probably fault controlled. The back-stripping method allows a subsidence curve to be constructed for this succession. It demonstrates an initial period of rapid rift-related subsidence followed by a short-lived hiatus that may be due to the cessation of subduction in this part of the Caledonides. A comparison of the Galway subsidence curve with that of the Silurian succession at Girvan in Scotland shows strong, but diachronous, similarities. This tends to support an earlier suggestion that they formed part of a single but partitioned basin throughout most of the Silurian period. Although the eustatic fall in sea level at the Llandovery–Wenlock boundary can be recognized, the influence of tectonic regime and sedimentation rates were the controlling factors in determining relative sea levels.

The British Isles lay at a palaeolatitude of 4°S during the Early Carboniferous (Courceyan–Arundian) period. This paper examines fossil gymnosperm wood from ten localities in western Ireland and southern Scotland in order to analyse palaeoclimate. Fifty-two percent of the 77 fossil wood specimens studied exhibit growth rings that possess subtle, discontinuous ring boundaries and ring increments of narrow but variable width. These growth rings are qualitatively and quantitatively analysed, and are shown to bear a close similarity to growth rings in modern araucarian conifer woods; these araucarian growth rings are formed in response to tropical rainfall seasonality linked to monsoonal circulation. The findings of this study therefore support earlier palaeoclimatic interpretations, based on sedimentological evidence, which suggest that the British Isles experienced a monsoonal climate during the Early Carboniferous (Courceyan–Arundian) period.

Unusual mineralized and silicified carbonate-rich geodes were found hosted in Lower Triassic red mudstones in Central Spain. From their borders to their centres, the geodes display (a) a millimetric carbonate crust, (b) a quartz rim, (c) massive dolomite, (d) gold-bearing iron-rich infills (hematite laths and goethite with up to 7000 ppm of gold) and (e) calcite cements that sometimes seal the central hollow. Textural evidence indicates that the geodes were originally anhydrite, which was subsequently replaced by quartz and dolomite. The resultant porosity from this replacement, or by later dissolution, has been filled by epithermal gold-bearing iron-oxide hydroxides, romanechite and calcite.

δ13C values indicate the participation of meteoric waters in an environment which was characterized by both a sub-desert climate and a temperate–tropical climate. Oxygen signatures reflect very variable temperatures for all minerals, with the exception of calcite, which appears to have precipitated at <38°C. Iron-oxide temperature values can reach up to 85°C (epithermal stage). The mineralogical assemblages of these unusual geodes denote early diagenetic replacement followed by the epithermal activity. This mineralization is linked to the Late Hercynian, calc-alkaline volcanism of Central Spain (the Hiendelaencina mining district).

High-resolution lithological and magnetic susceptibility logs were made of two sections of the Upper Llandovery Browgill Formation in northwest England: Stockdale Beck, the type section of the Browgill Formation, and Spengill. The Browgill Formation is composed of fine-grained deep marine siliciclastics, which can be divided broadly into two facies: a homogeneous grey mudstone, deposited under oxygenated bottom-water conditions, and subordinate beds of laminated, graptolite-bearing black mudstone deposited under low bottom-water oxygen levels. The latter facies is often partially or fully diagenetically altered to chlorite nodules, occasionally with manganese carbonate nucleii. Magnetic susceptibility logs are shown to reflect variations in the illite–chlorite ratio of the clay mineralogy. Chlorite is a paramagnetic mineral, so the bands of chlorite nodules produce magnetic susceptibility highs. Correlation demonstrates that diagenetically altered beds of laminated black mudstone are continuous between the two sections, now situated 32 km apart. This lateral continuity would favour pelagic fallout in preference to gravity flow as a depositional model for both facies. A correlated sequence within the turriculatus Biozone is 3.8 times thicker at Spengill than at Stockdale Beck, probably reflecting variations in sediment accumulation rates. Correlation also identifies significant non-sequences in both sections: at least 47% of the turriculatus Biozone (including maximus Sub-biozone) is missing at Stockdale Beck and at least 77% of the crispus Biozone is missing at Spengill. The identification of non-sequences may be of value for refining graptolite biostratigraphy.

The mid-Cretaceous sediments of northeast England were deposited at the western margin of the southern North Sea Basin, with sedimentation occurring in a range of tectonic settings. Detailed analysis of the areal distribution and sedimentary facies of Aptian to earliest Cenomanian sediments has allowed the pattern of onlap onto the Market Weighton structural high and changes in relative sea level to be documented. Successive onlap episodes during the Early Aptian, Late Aptian and Early Albian culminated in the final flooding of the structure during the Late Albian (varicosum Subzone). Sea-level curves generated from coastal onlap patterns are difficult to relate to published ‘global’ sea-level curves due to the high frequency of the fluctuations in relative sea level observed. Despite this, detailed correlation and analysis of sedimentological events suggest that even the most expanded, basinal succession is relatively incomplete. This study has also shown that the change from dominantly syn-tectonic to dominantly post-tectonic sedimentation style occurred in the late Early Albian.

More than 75% of heavy mineral spectra of Rhenohercynian greywackes from the Harz Mountains (Famennian–Visean), the Werra greywacke (Frasnian–Famennian) and the Rhenish Slate Mountains (Frasnian–Visean) contain small amounts of detrital chromian spinels. Similar grains have also been proven in sandstones of the Givetian Stiege beds (East Harz nappe). These sandstones are derived from the area of the Mid German Crystalline Rise, which is commonly interpreted as the source area of the Rhenohercynian greywackes. Microprobe analyses have revealed mainly a picotite composition. Presumable source rocks were chiefly Alpine-type peridotites. Due to the onset of spinel sedimentation in Givetian times, these peridotites must be at least partly of pre-Givetian age, and are assumed to be linked to Cadomian subduction. Potential source rocks are not exposed in the present outcrops of the Mid German Crystalline Rise nor in the Rhenohercynian zone or the Northern Phyllite zone, which implies that the presumed mafic to ultramafic lithologies were completely eroded and/or downfaulted during later stages of the Variscan orogeny.

Based on outcrop studies and borehole data, six bedded lithofacies and two reef types are recognized within the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of the English Midlands and Welsh Borderland. The lithofacies are interpreted to represent a series of carbonate shelf environments extending from below storm wave-base to well above fair weather wave-base. In common with many other shallow marine carbonate depositional systems, the principal controls on lithofacies development were hydrodynamic energy, the supply of fine clastic sediment, and patterns of colonization of the sea floor by organisms. Reef distribution was probably controlled by the nature of the substrate, water circulation, and rate of siliciclastic sedimentation. A depositional model is proposed which incorporates biostratigraphical evidence suggesting that the formation youngs to the west on the northern part of the shelf. Deposition of the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation there began in the West Midlands, where 12 m of microbial limestone were lain down in a mid-shelf setting during a local regression. The remainder of the shelf was dominated by low energy siliciclastic deposition at that time. The West Midlands then returned to somewhat deeper water, lower energy deposition, the resulting impure calcareous muds becoming diagenetically changed into the nodular limestone lithofacies. That lithofacies is commonly overlain successively by the interbedded limestone and silty mudstone lithofacies, and then the crinoidal grainstone lithofacies. This vertical lithofacies sequence is uniform over the entire northern part of the shelf, reflecting a gradual decrease in water depth. The crinoidal grainstone lithofacies was deposited as a wave-influenced carbonate sandbody which prograded from east to west. Lithofacies sequences on the southern shelf are laterally impersistent, probably due to greater tectonic instability and topographical variablity.

The scope of this study is to understand better the pre-Early Ordovician history of the west Pontides of northern Turkey by focusing on the best-exposed part of the Bolu Massif, which is located between Bolu and Yedigöller (Seven Lakes). The Palaeozoic rocks of the west Pontides tectonic belt of northern Turkey comprise a transgressive sedimentary sequence known as ‘Palaeozoic of İstanbul.’ In a few areas, the basement of the Palaeozoic sequence is exposed, the largest part of which is the Bolu Massif, which is located in the middle of the west Pontides. The lowermost unit of the Palaeozoic of İstanbul in the Bolu area is the Işığandere Formation, which is made up of fluvial red conglomerates and sandstones of Lower Ordovician age. Three different units are exposed unconformably beneath these continental clastics, forming the Bolu Massif. From the structural base to the top, these are as follows: (1) a high-grade metamorphic unit, known as the Sünnice Group); (2) granitoid intrusions, known as the Bolu Granitoid Complex; and (3) a greenschist meta-volcanic sequence (the Çaşurtepe Formation).

The Sünnice Group is the lowest, structurally speaking. It is a southwest–northeast-trending belt of migmatitic basement, consisting of amphibolites and paragneisses cut by small (< 10 m) metagranitic intrusions. The Sünnice Group is tectonically overlain by the Bolu Granitoid Complex and the Çaşurtepe Formation along the Karadere Fault. In the study area the Bolu Granitoid Complex is represented by two distinct, north-northeast–south-southwest-trending intrusions, the Tüllükiriş and Kapikaya plutons. The granitoids are mainly tonalitic and granodioritic in composition, cut by lam-prophyre and aplite dykes and intruded into the Çaşurtepe Formation. The Çaşurtepe Formation is composed mainly of andesitic and minor rhyolitic lavas, along with a meta-ignimbrite sequence.

The lavas have geochemical characteristics indicative of eruption in a subduction-related tectonic setting. The geochemistry of the intrusions also suggests emplacement in an arc-type setting. Initial Nd isotope data for the Çaşurtepe Formation indicate derivation from a depleted mantle source, whereas those for the granitoids are consistent with greater degrees of crustal contamination.
