The Cariboo region comprises that section of Central British Columbia between the Fraser river and the mountains of the N. Thompson river, extending northward from Clinton to Quesnel; through it the old Cariboo trail (now a motor road) passes and railway communication with the south is afforded by the P. G. & E. Ry. Its altitude is around 2500 ft. and it consists largely of rolling, wooded country interspersed with numerous lakes; in the southwest in the vicinity of Jesmond, Mt. Bowman, a northern spur of the mountains back of Lillooet, rises to a height of about 7500 ft. The summer rainfall is slight, and the area belongs in the so-called “dry belt”.

In entomological investigations it is frequently desirable to use varying temperatures rather than constant temperatures. The apparatus herein described, when installed in a rearing or storage chamber, makes it possible to control temperatures in any desired graph pattern over a period of twenty-four hours, and to repeat the same pattern any desired number of times. This is accomplished by removing the usual adjusting mechanism from a DeKhotinsky-thermo-regulator and substituting for it an automatic adjuster operated by a synchronous electric clock.

Much paler in the ground-color of the forewing than the typical form, the olive-gray shades being replaced by whitish; this is particularly evident between the reniform and apex of wing and along the inner margin. The broad blackish shading through central portion of wing from base to outer margin is heavy and a similar shade patch occurs on costa above the orbicular and reniform; the former is filled with white and in consequence is quite a prominent feature of the maculation, the latter is also largely white-filled with a slight ochreous shade in central portion and a strong black border-line on basal side. Secondaries almost pure white with faint traces of smoky terminal shading (somewhat more pronounced in the female) and indications of a smoky postmedian line in costal half of wing. Expanse 35 mm.

In classifying several collections of Mycetophilidae I have found six species which appear to be new. In addition I wish to report two interesting variations in wing venation which I observed.

The Mallophaga listed were collected from birds and mammals in various parts of Oklahoma as indicated. Included in the records of the material collected by the author during the past three years are numerous records from material furnished by various students in the Entomology Department of Oklahoma A. and M. College. Previous records of lice taken from hosts in this state are very few, although there are numerous papers on species of this group found on birds and mammals of the states north and east of Oklahoma.

Length 14 to 16 mm., the size large as in formosa manitoba Leng. Halotype, allotype, and eight paratypes the humeral lunule, middle band, and apical lunule completely confluent, the dark part of each elytron reduced to a triangular area extending to the apical third on the suture as figured; four paratypes similar but with feeble dark suffusions at the junction of each middle band with the humeral and apical lunules; one paratype with the middle band well separated from the lunules, the pattern in this specimen as in an average specimen of manitoba.

Odynerus dorsalis, one of the largest of North American Eumenine wasps, may be recognized by the following characters.

Clypeus of female about one and one-third times as wide as long, the straight apical margin about one-fourth of the grearest width, with slight, blunt edges, the surface flattened medially and with scattering, medium-sized punctures; of male, slightly wider than long, the apical margin very slightly curved inward or almost straight, with the edges more prominent and sharper than in the female, the surface flattened medially and much more sparsely punctate than in the female.

The following key and descriptive notes have been prepared in an endeavor to lessen the difficulties involved in the identification of the various species of Ptinid beetles that occur, usually as pests of stored products, in dwellings and warehouses in Canada. For a number of years, Mr. H. E. Gray of the Division of Entomology has been collecting these beetles from flour sheds and other types of warehouses throughout Canada. Most of the material on which the key is based was supplied by Mr. Gray, and much of the data on the distribution of several of the species is a result of Mr. Gray's observations.

Studies of stream bottoms as a factor in the abundance of aquatic insects is usually accomplished by random sampling of different kinds of pools and riffles. Various types of apparatus and methods are used. Ludwig (1922) used the hand-dip method in his studies. The Needham trap (1928) has also been used extensively in the study of rocky riffles. Gersbacher (1937) used the Peterson trap (1911) and the Ekman dredge (1911) for sand and mud bottom pools. At present the United States Bureau of Fisheries one foot trap, described by Surber (1937), is very popular in studying riffles.

For many years the writer has been endeavouring to obtain collections of Odonata from all parts of Canada as a basis for a study of their distriburion.

Preliminary lists have been published for most of the provinces but very little has hitherto appeared on the odonate fauna of Saskatchewan. The nearest approach to a list of the species from this province is contained in an early paper by the writer ('12b) in which records of nineteen species from Saskatchewan are given.

The remarkable nymphs of Baetisca rogersi were first found in the streams of northwest Florida in April, 1938. Several other nymphs were collected in June and November, but it was not until March of the following year that I was successful in securing adults. The nymphs are very hardy; those collected March 17 withstood an automobile trip of nearly three hundred miles and confinement in a small jar for almost three days with only a few casualties. In the laboratory at Gainesville, one male and two female imagoes were reared from the survivors.

It is the purpose of this paper to add a few hitherto unreported species of Ontario Orthoptera to the list of those already recorded for the province. The majority of the species here recorded were taken by the junior author in Essex County in the extreme southwestern portion of the province of Ontario and are the result of an expedition sponsored by the Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology.

The North American species of the large and complex genus Oscinella Becker (sens. lat.) were reviewed by Sabrosky (1936, Annals Ent. Soc. Amer., 29:707-728) in a synopsis based on his study of the types. Since that time, a large quantity of material has been examined, with the discovery of several undescribed species populations. Because of their close resemblance to known species, some of these have probably been confused with them in past determinations.

While studying the undetermined sawfly material in the Cornell University insect collection, the author discovered what he believed to be a species new to science in the genus Neurotoma. This belief was kindly confirmed by Dr. H. H. Ross who said that he likewise had a single specimen. Since that time four years ago, the author has collected this same species in considerable numbers and has also collected the larvae from the host plant which is Crataegus sp. It is therefore proposed to name it Neurotoma crataegi.

For many years the authors have been studying the butterflies of the Riding Mountains and of the Sand Ridge and have found numerous forms and races new to science. In a paper read some time ago at a meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, many of these forms and races were described. To make these descriptions available to more students, Dr. J. McDunnough suggested that we use the “Canadian Entomologist”. All the holotypes will be deposited in the Canadian National Collection and the allotypes in the Carnegie Museum.

In April, 1939, a trial was made of feeding the honey-sugar-agar mixture, formula 3, devised by Holloway (1939) for feeding adult parasitic insects. The test was made with the laboratory propagated Microcryptus basizonius Grav., a parasite of conifer-feeding sawflies. The routine food used in this work is seeded raisin, in addition to water, as reported by Green (1938). An initial investigation indicated that the parasites preferred the prepared food to raisin and that they devoured it avidly.

In several small collections of myriopods recently made in North Carolina, and chiefly in the Duke Forest at Durham, by Mrs. Nelle Bevel Causey, and by her transmitted to me for identification, occur representatives of the species listed below. The purpose of the present paper is primarily to diagnose the several new forms represented; bur because of the interest of some of the other records it seems desirable to give the complete list here as supplementary to the catalogue of forms previously known from the region. The types of the new species are retained in the author's collection.

A series of specimens of this genus from Churchill, Manitoba, includes males of piniphilus Esch., of heteronychus Fall, and of two species which are described below as new. I am unable to distinguish the females, all of which have each claw of each tarsus supplied with a broad basal tooth.
