Two of my colleagues, in years long gone by, have brought back to me from their journeyings specimens of interesting undescribed mayflies that I have placed in the Cornell University collection to arvait for study a more convenient season. Three of these I now describe. The first two are rather unique species of two well-known genera.

To my knowledge Atlides halesus has not been reported previously as occuring farther north than about thirty-eight degrees N. latitude (southern Illinois), so I believe its presence in north-western Oregon is worth recurding. McMinnville, the location at which I took the examples, is more than seven degrees farther north than points of previous capture. Comstock (Butterflies of Cal., 1927) mentions that this insect is not common in California but that it is recorded from many parts of that state.

Most writers in discussing the food plants of leafhoppers in the past have assumed that the majority of them were grass feeders. In the last few years a considerable amount of careful work has been done with the result that it is now evident that in a number of important groups the food plants are rarely if ever grasses.

Genus Prochloridea B. & McD. This genus has been placed in the Heliothiinae but after a study of the genitalia of a male of madonna B. & L., which is probably only a form of the genotype, modesta B. & McD., I believe it should be either placed next or sunk to Rhizagrotis as the genitalia show an extraordinary similarity to those of cloanthoides Grt., the genotype. I have already commented on the position of Rhizagrotis in the “Canadian Entomologist”, 1927, page 64, and restricted it to the species cloanthoides Grt. and albalis Grt.; the structural details of these two species fit in very well with the characterization of Prochloridea.

General ground color semihyaline to yellowish white marked with orange or red. Vertex with semblance of three white spots more or less surrounded with orange bands. Median white spot elongated. Pronotum with median Y-shaped orange mark, touching both margins, usual angular mark behind each eye. Scutellum with spot on tip, basal angles yellow. Clavi with basal anchor-shaped mark and rectangular spot before tip. Coria with angulate vitta arising on costa midway between plaque and humeral angle, reaching to claval suture. Another irregular-sided, zigzag, vitta arising at anterior end of plaque, more or less surrounding it and ending just before base of cell M4. Black spot in posterior end of plaque and base of cell M4. Tips of tegmina more or less dusky. Cross-veins red. Venter stramineous.

This rather small species was named from specimens taken from apple near Lawrence, Kansas. It has since been taken from the same host near Bentonville Arkansas.

General ground color semihyaline to yellowish white marked with reddish orange. Vertex with semblance of five white spots more or less surrounded with orange bands.

Somewhat similar to C. celeripes Lec, but with fully developed wings. Brownish bronzed, the punctured part on thc elytra greenish white or greenish blue; antennae with four basal joints bronzed, apical joints dark, hairy; palpi pale, yellowish, apical joints dark at tip; elytral markings grayish white, somewhat variable, but usually with a narrow marginal line or dash at middle, an apical line or lunule, the marginal line usually connected with the apical lunule, twelve of the thirty-three specimens have an indication of a humeral lunule and trace of a median spot, suggesting that a median band may be found on some future specimens.

General ground color yellowish white to semihyaline, markings red or orange. Vertex with semblance of three white spots more or less surrounded with red or orange bands. Pronotum with rather short triangular median spot, not touching either margin. Usual angular spot back of each eye. Scutellum with tip red, basal angles yellow outlined on two sides with red. Clavi with usual basal anchor-shaped mark and angular mark before tip. Coria with spot on costa midway between costal plaque and humeral angle, angulate vitta at anterior end of plaque, rectangular spot opposite middle of plaque, two spots at posterior end and blotch before base of cell M4. Cross-veins red. Black spot in base of cell M4. Tips of tegmen more or less dusky. Venter stramineous more or less tinged with pink.

Dr. Horn in his revision of the Galerucini places erosa, morosa and maritima as plain synonyms with puncticollis with the remark that no tangible difference seems to exist. In this he is wrong for on comparing typical puncticollis from Colorado, N. Dakota, etc. with maritima from the Atlantic coast the differences are very obvious. The latter have the prothorax much less roughly sculptured, more smooth, the elytral punctures are larger and more densely placed and the elytral pubescence generally scarcely visible, at least more easily abraded than in the typical form.

The genus Lycaota was placed by MacGillivray (1908) in a separate subfamily closely related to the Tenthredininae. Rohwer in 1911, transferred it to the subfamily Blennocampinae (Empriinae of Rohwer) on the basis of the position of the medio-cubital cross-vein. A study of the Selandriinae, Emphytinae and Blennocampinae indicates very strongly that the three subfamilies form a compact unit and that the predicellate condition of the first anal cell in the Blennocampinae arose from the condition existing in the Selandriinae and Emphytinae, not from the condition exhibited by Lycaota, which is very typical of the condition found in a large number of the Tenthredininae.

The following stucly is based on the material in the Canadian National Collection supplemented by specimens from the collections of Messrs. Carl G. Siepmann, F. S. Carr, and G. Stace Smith. No new characters for the separation of closely allied species are offered in this paper. The most valuable characters known are those of the so-called flagellum of the male genitalia; the most useful for key purposes are presented by the elytral markings.

An Arizona race nearest to reakirtii Edw. in which the under side design of the secondaries is uniformly dense, dark olive green and the cell bar on the upper side primaries is noticeably thick, rectangular, clear cut and conspicuously black, forming on the reverse side of the wing clear-cut, dart-shaped spots. of the secondaries of the females are generally yellowed on upper sides and rarely are all wing surfaces entirely yellow or white. Both sexes averzrge in size reakirtii as found in Los Angeles County, Calif.

In connection with studies on the biology of T. blondeli, condnctec in the years 1926 to 1930 inclusive, at Pender Harbour, British Columbia, red cedar trees were inclosed in cheese-cloth cages with a view to determining the duration of the larval stage. The cages were constructed prior to April 30, 1926, and the emergence of bettles from the trees was recorded.

In July 1931, while collecting beetles of the genus Donacia on rushes growing on the border of Lake of the Two-Mountains, near St. Placide, Que. I noticed a Hymenopterous insect alighting on one of these plants. It immediately walked down the stem, entering into the water and continued walking down, clinging to the stem of the plant, until it disappeared from view. Its movements under water were quite rapid. The water was about 24 to 30 inches deep.

Cheliferini tribus nov.

Diagnosis. Male: coxal sac entire, lacking a sharply differentiated atrium; statumen convolutum of male genitalia (with a few doubtful and rare exceptions) anteriorly deeply invaginated or retracted and bearing medianally in the depression an anteriorly projecting sclerotic “rod” (see Chamberlin, 1931). Female: median pair cribriform plates separate and distinct.

In November, 1930, spruce stands throughout a great deal of the interior of the Gaspe peninsula were found to have been partially defoliated by a sawfly. In some areas the greater part of the foliage had been eaten; about ten cocoons per square foot were found in moss and litter on the ground, beneath the trees.

This species was described several years ago (The Lepturini of America North of Mexico Pt. I. p. 62) from specimens labeled “Iowa”.

The occurrence in Canada of that unique and interesting species, Thylodrias contractus Mots., which Felt (2) has dubbed “the odd beet1e”, is a matter worthy of note.

This species was first discovered in North America, in May, 1902, by Mrs. Annie Trumbull Slosson, who found the insects in a box of neglected entomological specimens stored in an old closet in her home in New York.

Length, apex of head to tips of wings 5.75 mm.; width of wing at apex of clavus 1.75 mm.

Vertex broad, transverse, resembling pini, median length distinctly less than half as great as width at middle of posterior margin; anterior margin very broadly arcuate, posterior margin scarcely less so. Frons almost twice as long at middle as is clypeus, slightly transversely elevated just before lower margin; greatest width equal to median length. Pronotum with posterior margin slightly obtusely angulate at middle. Mesonotum tricarinate, median carina well defined anteriorly but obsolescent at apex, lateral carinae entire, distinctly divergent posteriorly.
