Size and general color:—Length from vertex to tip of anal plate, 1.88. Head and thorax black, lateral portions of prothorax often a deep brown. Abdomen deep brown to black with black dorsal and lateral bands. Cornicles light brown. Cauda rounded, dark brown to black; anal plate black, bilobed, deeply cleft.

In order to clear up certain doubts which had arisen regarding the identity of several Heptagenine species, placed at present in the genus Ecdyonurus, and described by Clemens from material collected in the Go Home Bay region of the Georgian Bay (1913, Can. Ent. XLV, 246-262), Mr. G. S. Walley spent the months of June and July, 1932, in this same locality, collecting and breeding nymphal material. In the group in question he was most successful in securing both nymphs and bred adults of all the species listed by Clemens; the present article, therefore, is presented with a view not only of rendering definitely recognizable certain of Clemens' species in which the original diagnoses were rather brief and incomplete, but also of correcting some specific misidentifications occurring in Clemens' paper.

In collections made by the writer during the last few years the following new forms have appeared, the types of which are in his collection.

Isoperla fumosa sp. nov.

Adult. Head brown, yellow around eyes and bases of antennae, a yellow spot in the ocellar triangle and another in front of the anterior ocellus; antennae and palpi brownish. Prothorax with angles somewhat rounded, brown with darker rugosities on either side of the broad central yellow stripe. The latter has a narrow brown central line. Wing veins brown. Legs brown. Abdomen brown with a little pale colour at the base and a pair of dorsal yellow dots on most of the segments. These dots are sometimes nearly obscured. Cerci dark brown at base, paler beyond.

Oblong, rather slender, castaneous, elytra pruinose, pronotum and head rufo-testaceous. Head cribrately punctured except hehind the distinct transverse carina on the vertex where there are a number of distinct punctures at the sides separated by their own diameters, clypeal suture slightly impressed, clypeal margin slightly reflexed, a few short erect setae immediately anterior to the carina.

In 1912 the writer published a preliminary list of the Odonata of the prairie provinces of Canada (Walker, 12a ), in which 49 species were recorded, including 40 from Manitoba. Since that time 23 additional species have been taken in this province and our knowledge of the distribution of those already recorded has been considerably extended. Some of these records have already been published in the “Entomological Record” and elsewhere (see list of references) but they are scattered and incomplete and it therefore seems worth while to bring all the available data together into one paper as a basis for future work on the Manitoba fauna.

In the course of the preparation of a paper on the Dytiscidae of Minnesora and Manitoba several new species were discovered. As this paper, though finished, cannot be published for some time, it is felt wise to make these species known and the opportunity to add a few others is taken.

In a collection of Mecoptera belonging to the Canadian National Museum and sent to me for determination by Dr. McDunnough, I was much surprised to find several specimens of an undescribed species of Boreus. In as much as new species of North American Mecoptera are now rarely encountered and especially since this particular species is a most unusual one, I consider it justifiable to devote a separate paper to the description of this insect.

The species here described were collected by Walter R. Sweadner, Department of Zoology, University of Pittsburgh, during 1932. The writer is also indebted to Doctor E. H. Graham, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the identification of the host plant material.

The North American species of this difficult genus are very poorly known. The names of our species, as listed in Leng's catalog, are in need of some revision. One name, mellillus (Say), has escaped the attention of all authors but is valid for the common Drasterius elegans of our literature.

This list is based mainly upon parasites reared from field collected material while the author was working at the Bedford Entomological Laboratory of the Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station during the summer of 1931. Special attention was given to Lepidopterous stem-borers and leaf rollers likely to be found near peach orchards. Several other records, obtained from specimens in the collection of the author, have been included. All records without indication of the year are for the 1931 season.

Male.—Length 12.4 mm. Body feebly convex. Dorsal surface of head, pronotum, and elytra green, not bronzed. Antennae, labrum, mandibles, palpi, scutellum, legs, and entire ventral surface including the elytral epipleura, black; vestiture bright reddish-brown.

Female. Length 5.5 mm.; width 2.8 mm. Dark reddish-brown, the antennae, legs, and side margins of the pronotum and elytra paler.

Traces to section 27 (females) in Cushman's revision of the genus (Proc. U. S. N. M. Vol. 53, p. 513, 1917). Differs from mordellistenae Cush. in having the wings brownish and the face sub-equal in width to the eye length. Differs from incompletus (Prov.) in the brownish wings, the absence of pale orbital lines, broader stigma, broader radial cell and shorter metacarpus. Resembles fuscipennis Cress., but smaller with narrower face, eyes parallel within and abdomen wholly blackish. The male traces to section 13 (males) differing from the male of mordellistenae in the brownish wings, the absence of orbital rings and uniformly dark abdomen. From incompletus it differs in the brownish wings, broader ocellocular space which is slightly greater than the diameter of the lateral ocellus, and the lack of the orbital rings.

In the May, 1932, number of the Canadian Entomologist, G. Chagnon records observing an insect resembling an ichneumonid walking down the stem of an aquatic plant into the water.

This habit in the genus Agriotypus has been known for many years. These insects are parasitic in the cases of caddis flies, entering the water by walking down the surfaces of stones or plants to parasitize their hosts.

Holotype male. Medium sized, rather elongate; head, prothorax and underside piceous or rufo-piceous, each elytron with a basal and sub-apical dark area much as in subvittata, the remainder of the body testaceous or slightly darker. Head densely, moderately, variolately punctate, rather densely clothed with yellowish hair; clypeal suture slightly impressed, clypeus rather strongly reflexed, truncate at apex, the angles broadly rounded, sides faintly convergent apically, surface closely, coarsely punctate. Antennal club not quite equal to funicle.

Holotype male. Piceous, shining, form of arizonensis but slightly smaller. Clypeus narrowly emarginate and notched at centre of apex, head in front and on sides coarsely punctate; smooth behind, genae acute, prominent, coarsely and rather densely punctate; frontal horn long, arcuate, surface deeply pitted on sides and rear, front smooth. Thorax with a median protuberance triangularly emarginate at apex, the angles rounded and convergently apically; surface of protuberance slightly flattened, with distinct longitudinal impression, very coarsely and rather sparsely punctured at the centre; at each side near side margin a horn-like projection, the surface between these and the median protuberance deeply excavated and coarsely but rather sparsely punctate; between the usual short carina near the side margin and the horn-like projection is at about the middle a shallow fovea which is very coarsely punctured, surface of thorax coarsely punctate at margins, near front angles, and as noted above, the disc very finely and sparsely punctured; front angles obtusely subangulate, lateral margin near the front angles not sinuate, hind angles broadly rounded; fore part of thorax not tuberculate.

In the “Canadian Entomologist” for September, 1915, T. D. A. Cockerell writes of Phyciodes ismeria (gorgone Hbn.) that the “species evidently hibernates as a larva.” Observations in Manitoba have shown this deduction to be correct. A colony of larvae discovered on Helianthus scaberrimus Ell. (rigidus Desf.) in the Aweme district, July 20, 1928, hibernated in that stage, and one specimen successfully completed its development the following spring.

The summer of 1933 was spent by Mr. W. J. Brown of the Dominion Entomological Branch in insect faunal survey work on the Gaspe Peninsula, his camp being located on the slopes of Mt. Lyall, near the headwaters of the Cascapedia river, at an altitude of about 1500 ft. A small but very interesting collection of Ephemeroptera was secured, comprising Blasturus nebulosus Wlk., Leptophlebia adoptiva McD., Leptophlebia debilis Wlk., Ephemerella aurivillii Bngsstn., Baetis vagans McD., Iron pleuralis Banks and Iron gracilis Morg. There were further three undescribed species taken which very clearly link up the Ephemerid species of the Gaspe peninsula with those of the Rocky Mountain region; of one of these the nymphal association was discovered. I describe these species as follows.

Robust, reddish-brown, sparsely clothed with fulvous and white pubescence. Head coarsely, rather densely punctured, sparsely clothed with recumbent white hairs; antennae slightly longer than the body ( ♀ ), segments bicolored, basal portion of each segment clothed with white pubescence, apex glabrous or finely clothed with brownish hairs; scape moderately stout, second segment about one-fifth as long as scape, third segment slightly less than half as long as scape, remaining segments diminishing gradually in length toward apex.
