In the spring of 1857 a ploughman on The Law Farm, in the parish of Urquhart, Morayshire, Scotland, turned up a group of gold ornaments. The exact number of objects is uncertain, and the relics were widely dispersed. This paper records the results of an attempt to discover the whereabouts of the surviving pieces, and makes some suggestions about the significance of the find. Although a considerable number of the torcs have been located, several still remain hidden to view, and it is one of the purposes of this paper to publicize the find in the hope that the missing objects will be identified and made known. The marble monument of Tobias Rustat in Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge, has never been attributed to a designer or sculptor on documentary evidence. From a review of Rustat's career and connections, it can be concluded that Grinling Gibbons and his studio were responsible for it, with parts carved by Arnold Quellin and possibly John Nost.

Even if the number of bronze bowls which constitute one of the brightest spots in the art of our Dark Age had remained at the respectable figure at which it stood a few years ago, British art could still boast of having furnished a most valuable contribution to the art of the period. But when we find added to this number two splendid examples in the space of three years we may well wonder what fresh revelation of the art may still be in store for future discovery, destined to illumine further the mystery that surrounds them and their origins. In 1931 the archaeological world was delighted by the Winchester bowl, as much on account of its perfect state of preservation as for the intricate workmanship of the scrolled designs on its escutcheons, even though these belonged to a type already familiar from numerous examples discovered in the past. Even so the variety of the patterns offers, as Mr. Kendrick has demonstrated, a most fascinating problem, one which he has gone far to solve, and yet, as he would be the first to admit, there are many points in their history that still remain obscure.

It might have been thought that after eight campaigns—extending back to 1900 and supplemented by minor investigations—the Palace site of Knossos would have been pretty well exhausted. The work indeed on my first volume about the House of Minos had brought out certain lacunas in the evidence which it was of the first importance to fill in, and the probings that it had been possible to carry out in the period immediately preceding the Great War led me to the conclusion that the site, if seriously attacked, might still be productive of archaeological surprises.

The northern end of the Isle of Man is a low plain, a legacy of the Ice Age, consisting of boulder clay, sands, and gravels, bordered round the coast by a range of sandhills rising from 100 ft. at the break made by the Lhen to over 300 ft. where they cluster around the little village of Kirk Bride. The mouth of the Lhen at a distance of five miles from the foot of the hills, the pre-glacial coastline of the Island, is the reputed landing-place of the Scandinavian settlers who came sailing down from the western isles of Scotland; and for their small and shallow vessels the gravel beach, still known by their name of ‘the Ayres’, was admirably adapted.
