The James Ross Island area is recognized as one of the geological treasures of Antarctica. It exposes a section of 5–6 km of Cretaceous and Tertiary marine sedimentary strata with an important content of reworked Upper Jurassic rocks near the base. This succession is probably one of the most important Cretaceous sequences in the Southern Hemisphere.

A technique for moult staging Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) was used in the analysis of field samples to predict intermoult periods and hence assess growth and the effects of seasonal changes in food availability. The proportion of moulting krill was used, in conjunction with laboratory data on the duration of this phase, to predict the moulting frequency (intermoult period, IMP). The moulting frequency was then combined with appropriate daily growth increments from laboratory study to assess overall growth in the krill sampled. The effects of seasonal fluctuations in food availability on moulting frequency were examined for samples taken at five different locations and times of year. Moulting rate was not linearly related to the availability of phytoplankton, although it is likely that this factor has a marked effect. Similarly, although temperature affects IMP, the data indicate that this is not a simple relationship either. These preliminary data indicate the value of utilizing this technique in the analysis of field samples of Antarctic krill.

Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarctica Boulenger) are a keystone species in the Ross Sea. Silverfish eggs and larvae are abundant during spring amongst the sub-surface platelet ice in Terra Nova Bay. It is not known whether the eggs are spawned elsewhere and accumulate under the ice or whether there is mass migration of silverfish to coastal spawning sites in winter. To test the latter hypothesis, an upward-looking 67 kHz echo sounder was moored in Terra Nova Bay to observe potential silverfish migration. The echo sounder was deployed at 380 m in a seabed depth of 550 m and ran for 210 days from 15 May until 11 December 2015. Acoustic reflections consistent with silverfish were observed at depths of 230–380 m during 9–22 September. This timing is consistent with the presence of eggs typically observed in October. Adult silverfish were also detected with an echo sounder and camera deployed through the ice in McMurdo Sound on 10 November 2015. Juvenile silverfish, but not adults, were observed through the ice in Terra Nova Bay during 11–16 November 2017. This paper provides a proof of concept, showing that innovative use of acoustics may help fill important observation gaps in the life history of silverfish.

Pony Lake, at Cape Royds, Antarctica, is a shallow, eutrophic, coastal lake that freezes solid in the winter. Changes in Pony Lake's physicochemical parameters and microbial community were studied during the transition from ice to open water. Due to rising water temperatures, the progressive melt of the ice column and the gradual mixing of basal brines into the remaining water column, Pony Lake evolved physically and chemically over the course of the summer, thereby affecting the microbial community composition. Temperature, pH, conductivity, nutrients and major ion concentrations reached their maximum in January. Pony Lake was colonized by bacteria, viruses, phytoflagellates, ciliates, and a small number of rotifers. Primary and bacterial production were highest in mid-December (2.66 mg C l-1 d-1 and 30.5 μg C l-1 d-1, respectively). A 16S rRNA gene analysis of the bacterioplankton revealed 34 unique sequences dominated by members of the β- and γ-proteobacteria lineages. Cluster analyses on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) banding patterns and community structure indicated a shift in the dominant members of the microbial community during the transition from winter ice, to early, and late summer lakewater. Our data demonstrate that temporal changes in physicochemical parameters during the summer months determine community dynamics and mediate changes in microbial species composition.

Wind fields derived from ERS-1 scatterometer data, acquired over the open water present in the western Ross Sea during the summer season, are used to study the patterns of mesoscale atmospheric flow connected with surges of katabatic air from the Terra Nova Bay convergence zone, located in the coastal region of Victoria Land. These katabatic winds may turn northward but also southward, or divide into separate northward- and southward-turning components; the latter situation is illustrated by a detailed case study. Analysis of concurrent AWS data, suggests that the most likely mechanism for the observed southward turning is the existence of a highly-localised low pressure centre south of Terra Nova Bay. Comparison of multitemporal ERS-1 scatterometer wind fields with AWS wind measurements demonstrate that the satellite data are: (i) able to correctly portray changes in mesoscale circulation patterns, and (ii) suitable for the routine monitoring of winds over open water around the Antarctic coastline, despite a less than ideal temporal coverage.

Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) are responding to ocean–climate variability throughout the marine ecosystem of the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) where some breeding colonies have declined by 80%. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers were used to understand historical population genetic structure and gene flow given relatively recent and continuing reductions in sea ice habitats and changes in numbers of breeding adults at colonies throughout the WAP. Genetic diversity, spatial genetic structure, genetic signatures of fluctuations in population demography and gene flow were assessed in four regional Adélie penguin colonies. The analyses indicated little genetic structure overall based on bi-parentally inherited microsatellite markers (FST =-0.006–0.004). No significant variance was observed in overall haplotype frequency (mtDNA ΦST =0.017; P=0.112). Some comparisons with Charcot Island were significant, suggestive of female-biased philopatry. Estimates of gene flow based on a two-population coalescent model were asymmetrical from the species’ regional core to its northern range. Breeding Adélie penguins of the WAP are a panmictic population and hold adequate genetic diversity and dispersal capacity to be resilient to environmental change.

The Lagrelius Point Formation (?Barremian–Aptian) is the basal unit of the Gustav Group and crops out on the north-west coast of James Ross Island. It consists of about 250 m of coarse-grained siliciclastic rocks. The type section of the Lagrelius Point Formation is defined here from just south of Lagrelius Point. The measured section comprises the uppermost 80 m of the unit and mainly consists of clast-supported, boulder, cobble to pebble conglomerates; very coarse to medium-grained sandstones occur rarely. Four sedimentary facies are recognized. A disorganized conglomerate facies (1) is interpreted as having been deposited from non-cohesive debris flows and high density gravelly turbidity currents. Inversely graded conglomerate facies (2) and normally graded to graded stratified conglomerate and pebbly sandstone facies (3) reflect sedimentation from high density gravelly turbidity currents. Massive and parallel stratified sandstone facies (4) is thought to record deposition from high density sandy turbidity currents. Two types of facies assemblages have been recognized. A major channel assemblage, represented by the lower part of the measured section and the minor channel assemblage forming the upper part of the section. The total succession is thought to represent the aggradation of a major submarine braided channel followed by the establishment and subsequent infill of a series of minor channels in a marginal terrace.

We add comments to a recent series of publications in peer-reviewed journals concerning the distribution of large Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) found over the inner shelf of the Ross Sea. We note that earlier fish ecologists advanced innovative hypotheses invoking physical–biological interactions with life history, and that these, far from being disproved, have been relegated by more immediately pressing management concerns. We argue that, despite the considerable advances achieved by research groups working on D. mawsoni, an understanding of distribution and abundance is incomplete without reference to the physical structure that supports their life history. We briefly consider hypotheses highlighted by the recent literature in the context of major features of the shelf circulation in the Ross Sea, in particular intrusions of modified Circumpolar Deep Water along trough systems. We suggest physical–biological interactions that may be involved and call for improvements in the monitoring programme that can help test between the competing hypotheses.

Species distribution modelling studies the relationship between species occurrence records and their environmental setting, providing a valuable approach to predicting species distribution in the Southern Ocean (SO), a challenging region to investigate due to its remoteness and extreme weather and sea conditions. The specificity of SO studies, including restricted field access and sampling, the paucity of observations and difficulties in conducting biological experiments, limit the performance of species distribution models. In this review, we discuss some issues that may influence model performance when preparing datasets and calibrating models, namely the selection and quality of environmental descriptors, the spatial and temporal biases that may affect the quality of occurrence data, the choice of modelling algorithms and the spatial scale and limits of the projection area. We stress the importance of evaluating and communicating model uncertainties, and the most common evaluation metrics are reviewed and discussed accordingly. Based on a selection of case studies on SO benthic invertebrates, we highlight important cautions to take and pitfalls to avoid when modelling the distribution of SO species, and we provide some guidelines along with potential methods and original solutions that can be used for improving model performance.

At two localities adjacent to Hatherton Glacier, Darwin Mountains, a thick glacio-lacustrine sequence underlies the main diamictite facies of the Darwin Tillite (Metschel Tillite), and at one of these locations a glacio-lacustrine sequence also conformably overlies the diamictite. These deposits record the initial advance and final retreat of the Gondwana ice cap. Other, pro- and periglacial phases within these sequences record several minor advances and retreats of the ice sheet. Carbonaceous sediments above and below the main diamictite phase show that vegetation was established near the ice margin, suggesting that present-day ice margin temperatures are colder than those experienced during the Permo-Carboniferous (Gondwana) glaciation. It appears that there was little or no erosion of the Devonian Taylor Group which underlies the glacial sequence. The apparent erosional nature of the contact between the Permo-Carboniferous glacial sequence and the overlying Permian coal measures is attributed to surface winnowing of unconsolidated tills and locally the units are conformable.

Twelve saline lakes 5-35m above sea level in Bunger Hills (66°10'S, 101°00'E) were investigated from January to April in 1987-89. Some lakes may be relict and all were subject to wind-borne marine salts with present salinities between 3.4-79.0°/‰ and δ18O values mostly between -10 to -14%. Temperatures up to 17.7°C were measured at the bottom of Lake Polest where a sharp thermohalocline was observed during the period of open water. Mg2+ dominated over Ca2+ in all the lakes. Phosphates concentration was 3-10 μgP I-1 and total phosphorus 8-16 μgP I-1. The concentrations of nitrates and nitrites were often equal, ranging between 1-4 μgN I-1. Dissolved O2 was usually near saturation levels but peaked at more than 230% of saturation in the hypolimnion of Lake Polest as a result of temperature-enhanced photosynthesis with an assimilation rate of 23.9 mgC (mg Chl a)-1h-1. The values for chlorophyll a were 0.26-1.93 mg m-3 and for primary production 0.013-0.171 gCm-3d-1, the latter being an order of magnitude higher than in the fresh water lakes of the Bunger Hills.

Trematomus eulepidotus and T. loennbergii are two of the most common epibenthic fish in the waters of the High Antarctic continental shelf. Since the reproductive biology of these species has not been studied in the Ross Sea, we provide a macroscopic and histological analysis of the reproductive effort and gonadal development in both sexes. Most samples were collected during benthic trawl surveys in the south-western Ross Sea in the 1996 and 1997 summer seasons. The aim of the study was to define the reproductive characteristics of these two sympatric species and to examine the hypothesis that different reproductive strategies mitigate interspecific competition. We found that, in common with most Antarctic notothenioids, both species possess a suite of similar reproductive strategies including delayed sexual maturity, prolonged gametogenesis, group-synchronous oocyte maturation, a single spawning event per year and iteroparity. Both species show a comparable reproductive effort in terms of potential fecundity with between 2000 and 20 000 eggs per female per season. Nevertheless, the two species exhibited a considerable difference in the timing of the breeding season, spawning in summer (T. eulepidotus) and in autumn (T. loennbergii). This gives rise to a mismatch in the time of appearance of larvae in the environment and probably leads to reduced competition.

Bothrometopus huntleyi is a flightless weevil endemic to the volcanically-formed sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands archipelago that arose approximately 0.5 million years ago (m.y.a.). Since emergence, a series of volcanic and glaciation events have occurred on Marion Island, whilst Prince Edward Island, the second island constituting the archipelago, has remained largely unaffected by glaciation. Cytochrome oxidase I gene analyses indicate that major historical dispersal events in this species are linked to the geologically discrete histories of these islands and underlie the high haplotype diversity (0.995) recovered for the Prince Edward Islands archipelago. The estimated time to haplotype coalescence of ∼ 0.723 m.y.a. is in keeping with estimated dates of island emergence, and the majority of individuals appear to have descended from a relict, high-altitude population that is still present on Marion Island. The first major inter-island dispersal event occurred ∼ 0.507 m.y.a., coinciding with the oldest dated rocks on Marion Island. Apart from this early inter-island colonization, only one other between-island dispersal event was detected. The genetically discrete B. huntleyi complexes on each of the islands of the Prince Edward Islands archipelago together with the low levels of inter-island gene flow reaffirm the need to control alien invasive mice, which are restricted to Marion Island, and which prey on this weevil species.

This study presents an arsenic concentration time series from 1964–2009 at Dome Argus, Antarctica. The data show a very large increase in arsenic concentration from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s (by a factor of~22) compared with the values before the mid-1980s. This increase is likely to be related to the increased copper smelting in South America. Arsenic concentration then decreased in the late-1990s, most probably as a result of environmental regulations in South America. The sudden increase in arsenic concentration observed at Dome Argus coincides with similar increases observed at Dome Fuji and in Antarctica Ice Core-6 (IC-6) at the same time, suggesting that arsenic pollution during the period from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s was a regional phenomenon in Antarctica. Investigations of arsenic concentrations at these three Antarctic locations show that, during this time, regional arsenic distribution followed dust transport pathways associated with general climate models with South America as a major source region for the half of Antarctica facing the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

An ice dam with a former impoundment volume of 1.1 × 106 m3 is reported from the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The ice of the dam was derived from wind-drifted snow subsequently changed into ice by normal summer melt and freeze processes. The reformation (after 1979 and 1987) and failure of this ice dam (during 1987 and 1990) indicates the potential for the release of geomorphologically significant flows in a polar climate. The origin of a nearby fluvially eroded channel is attributed to the release of an ice-dammed impoundment. The potential of such flows for reworking glacial debris may be important when considering the sedimentology of former proglacial areas.

The Latady Group (southern Antarctic Peninsula) hosts the most diverse assemblage of Jurassic molluscs from this continent. A new gastropod mollusc, Silberlingiella latadyensis sp. nov. and three forms assigned to Rissoidae, Pseudomelaniidae and Bullinidae from the Middle-Late Jurassic, Bathonian–Kimmeridgian Hauberg Mountains Formation, Ellsworth Land, Antarctic Peninsula are described here. Silberlingiella is transferred to Eustomatidae and is the first confirmed record of this family in the Southern Hemisphere, indicating a much more widespread Jurassic distribution. The Triassic and Jurassic species of Silberlingiella are compared with the coeval European genus Diatinostoma. Eustomatidae is proposed as an ancestral group for Potamididae and Batillariidae. The composition of the gastropod association described herein differs markedly from the only other Antarctic Jurassic fauna from Alexander Island.

A weather episode, characterized by the passage of synoptic disturbances, is investigated for Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Due to the sparsity of observations, information about the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation at high resolution can be gained only by modelling. The simulations presented here are performed with the high-resolution, non-hydrostatic weather forecast COSMO Model with a horizontal mesh size of 7 km. The comparison with observations at four stations shows that the simulation captures the general meteorological conditions well, while a warm bias and a weak daily cycle are found in near-surface temperatures. With regard to precipitation, the timing relates well to the observations; the amount of precipitation, however, is that of an extreme event and possibly overestimated in some regions. The horizontal distribution of precipitation is dominated by topographic effects. The simulations show the general decrease of precipitation toward the interior, as seen in the accumulation climatology, however, the decrease is not monotonous. For example, in the simulations horizontal structures such as precipitation bands of some 100 km width appear on the plateau, which can only be resolved by models with mesh sizes of 10 km or less.

The study of polychaetes from the Marion Dufresne expedition to the Îles Crozet in 1982 provided 45 species from depths ranging from 50–1055 m. The most abundant was Eunice pennata, found at all depths and in all types of substratum in about 66% of the samples. This species with Laetmonice producta, Harmothoe spinosa and Lanice marionensis made up over 50% of all polychaete specimens. A homogenous polychaete assemblage dominated by the above mentioned group of species was encountered in the shallower stations (100–300 m). A mosaic-like and less abundant polychaete fauna with some characteristic, abundant species: Amage sculpta, Laetmonice wyvillei, Leanira quatrefagesi and Melinna cristata was encountered in the deeper stations (300–1055 m). Clear similarities between the polychaete fauna of Îles Crozet and soft-sediment polychaete assemblages of Marion and Prince Edward Islands were noticed. No such affinity was encountered with the polychaete fauna of Îles Kerguelen. Their position in relation to the Polar Front as well as possible differences in bottom deposits (calcareous versus siliceous) may in part explain these dissimilarities. The biogeographical status of Kerguelen Islands is also discussed.
