Summary

The Introduction provides an overview of the book. First, it describes how the global resurgence of religion and the concurrent attempts by states and societies to restrict religious practice in the face of this resurgence have given rise to a third development: violent resistance. Second, it introduces the concepts of “religious terrorism” and “religious freedom” and discusses what makes them worthwhile topics of study. Finally, it provides an outline of subsequent chapters.
