Summary
Toscanini's London concert programmes are here set out in chronological order, each followed by a note on any extant recordings with an estimation of their significance in the context of Toscanini's recorded legacy as a whole. The planned programmes for cancelled concerts, including his 1940 series, follow.
All the BBC SO concerts, other than the concert in Oxford on 8 June 1937, were broadcast, and all commenced at 8.15pm, with the exception of those on 30 October 1937 (8.30pm) and 28 May 1939 (3pm). The BBC required that all concerts had an interval except the Brahms Requiem on 30 October 1937 (no interval) and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis on 26 and 28 May 1939, when Toscanini was persuaded to make a mid-work pause for five minutes only. The 1935 and the 1937, 1938 and 1939 series were broadcast on the National Service, save for the following broadcasts on the Regional Service: 28 May, 4 and 14 June 1937; 23 and 30 May 1938; 12 and 26 May 1939. Both 1952 Philharmonia concerts were broadcast by the BBC.
In addition to the works listed below, the British National Anthem was customarily performed at the first and last concerts of a series and also when royalty was present (indicated with an asterisk by the dates below). The American anthem was also played during the 1930 European tour of the New York Philharmonic- Symphony. Both anthems were therefore conducted by Toscanini on 1 and 4 June 1930.
