Summary
This appendix lists 150 major institutions in democracy assistance. It includes multilateral organizations, government agencies, quasi-governmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations. The list was culled from scholarly resources on democracy promotion as well as the data set of grants funded by the National Endowment for Democracy that was created for this book. Any list of “major” organizations inevitably involves some subjectivity. In the hopes of creating a valuable resource for future researchers, I cast a fairly wide net in creating this list. Of course, I still leave out many important actors promoting freedom in the world. I included NGOs only if they had received grants to work in at least three countries.
