Summary
At the time of the Cash for Comment affair you said you felt sorry for John Laws, and I'm curious about that.
I still do in a way, because I don't think Laws has ever made any secret of the fact that he is a salesman, he's a voice for hire, he advertises things, he flogs things, and I think he was probably stunned at the tonne of bricks that fell on him. He actively promotes himself as a super salesman.
Do you think that most of his listeners understand him that way?
I think to a great degree they know that Laws will spruik anything. He's as obvious about it as the demonstrator standing in Coles frying little sausages and handing them to you on toothpicks. He's never made any secret about it.
What about the argument that he was presenting his own opinion?
I think that was really badly handled. He probably can see that now too. It should have been made much clearer that this was verging into editorial, well not verging – that it was editorial.
