Venerabili in Christo patri et domino Domino Waltero, Dei gratia episcopo Dunelmensi, ecclesiae Eboracensis suffraganeo, Iohannes de Newton legum doctor, ecclesiae cathedralis Eboracensis thesaurarius, reverendi in Christo patris et domini Domini Richardi, Dei gratia Eboracensis archiepiscopi, Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati in spiritualibus vicarius generalis, salutem in eo qui est omnium vera salus. Breve regium nobis per dictum reverendum patrem nuper transmissum recepimus in haec verba:

Henricus, Dei gratia rex Angliae et Franciae et dominus Hiberniae, venerabili in Christo patri R[ichardo], eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Quia sicut clare scitis ad subeundum et supportandum sumptuosa et immensa onera quae nos pro salvatione et defensione regni nostri, ac marchiarum eiusdem, necnon ecclesiae sanctae facere oportebit de bonis nostris absque fidelium ligeorum nostrorum adminiculo non sufficimus nee valemus; vobis in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini rogando mandamus quatenus praemissis debito intuitu attentis et ponderatis, suffraganeos vestros, decanos et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium, abbates et priores, et alios electivos, exemptos et non exemptos, archidiaconos, capitula, conventus et collegia, totumque clerum cuiuslibet dioecesis vestrae provinciae ad comparendum coram vobis in ecclesia cathedrali Beati Petri Eboracensis vel alibi prout expedire videritis, citra duodecimum diem Decembris proximo futurum [12 December 1404] more solito convocari faciatis, et ipsos in hac parte ex causa praedicta ad subsidium in hoc casu competens et necessarium, ad supportationem dictorum onerum nobis concedendum eo specialius et efficacius quo magis sciveritis aut poteritis, solicite inducatis, et partes vestras ad hoc diligenter et effectualiter apponatis; nos in cancellaria nostra de quantitate subsidii illius et de terminis solutionis eiusdem sub sigillo vestro distincte et aperte certificantes. Et hoc sicut nos et honorem nostrum et salvationem et defensionem ecclesiae catholicae ac regni nostri praedicti diligitis, nullatenus omittatis. Teste meipso apud Coventry, secundo die Novembris anno regni nostri sexto [2 November 1404].
