Summary

When he arrived at Pitcairn Island in 1832, Joshua W. Hill lied to the islanders. He told them he had been sent by London to be their colonial governor. He had no such permission. In addition to telling a lie, though, he also presented the Pitcairn Islanders with a collection of paperwork that documented his career up to his arrival in their midst. Unlike previous histories of this period in Pitcairn’s history, this chapter interrogates those papers, discovering that many of Hill’s claims about his pre-Pitcairnese life were, in point of fact, true. The result is an interesting picture of a man with profound and important colonial, and indeed global, connections, a man London might have asked to be the governor of Pitcairn Island, if London had wanted a governor for Pitcairn in the first plae.
