Summary

On his way to Pitcairn Island, Joshua Hill made stops at Hawai‘i and at Tahiti. In each of these places, he connected with missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and the London Missionary Society. These groups were working with the new Kamehameha and Pomare dynasties in two of the Pacific Ocean’s most dynamic emergent states. This chapter investigates Hill’s involvement with these transnational missionary movements, movements that framed Europe’s engagement with the Pacific, and it argues that Hill saw Pitcairn as the lynchpin for British evangelical and imperial work in the Pacific. Encouraged by the work he saw being done in Tahiti and Hawai‘i and by the work he himself did at those islands, Hill landed at Pitcairn certain that it could be made into the evangelical center of the British Pacific.
