Governments have often used deportation to limit their populations of refugees and asylum-seekers. The purposes of deportation include preventing people from filing asylum claims at all, removing those whose claims have been rejected, transferring responsibility for refugees to other countries, and repatriating refugees who have already been living in a country for some time.
