I suppose that growing up poor in a rough-and-tumble Midwestern town, replete with fist fights and run-ins with police, gave me some of my interest in the legal system and fed my willingness to “dirty” my academic research life with constant forays into the real world of criminal justice. I did not, however, start off my interest in social psychology with the legal system in mind. Bear with me. My story is a little different than most of the narratives in this book because a significant part of my story involves the application of my research findings to the real world of police investigations.
