Summary

Nos anos 70 chegou á aldea a televisión. Nos 80 os electrodomésticos. Nos

anos 90 as guitarras eléctricas. Bravura ancestral enchufada nun amplificador.

‘In the 1970s televisions arrived in the villages. In the 1980s it was domestic

appliances. In the 1990s electric guitars. Ancestral wildness plugged to an

amplifier. In each block a rowdy gang, in each village a furious band.’

Xurxo Souto

do monte máis salvaxe.

‘From the thorns and flowers of the roughest gorse,

from the wildest mountain.

From the heat and the smells of moonshine and queimada,

that protect from the persisting rain and frost in the bones.

From the covens in caves, in lost nights,

with witches and goblins dancing over the fire.

From the stones in the hedges, in the heads and the scythe,

whispering the whistling sound of a popular song.

From the guitars bought with the first unemployment check

or the underground economy.

From the contraband tobacco tampered with tropical aromas.

From love, hate, frustration or an intoxication

of watts in a clandestine distillery.

From all those sites and many more, was born,

with a Galician yell in the mouth, this rock of ours … NON-NEUTERED’

Manifesto Bravú (quoted in Valiño)

If the movida galega of the 1980s was fundamentally an urban phenomenon of modern cultural reconversion, centered mostly in Vigo, in a permanent tension with Madrid, the rock bravú explosion of the 1990s was a multicentered movement disseminated throughout the Galician geography, and with strong rural roots, which tried to reconcile Galician tradition and global modernity.
