Summary

Chapter 6 extends the party fit framework to the decision to seek reelection and explores how disparities in legislator retention also matter for changes in polarization. I use Poole and Rosenthal’s (2007) DW-NOMINATE scores to analyze the decision to retire among members of Congress from 1982 to 2010. I find that liberal Republican and conservative Democratic members of Congress are more likely to leave congressional office than ideological conformists during this time period as well. This relationship is especially apparent in the polarized era, when it became increasingly difficult for moderates to achieve their goals in office. If members no longer receive the party, policy, and personal benefits of the office, they have fewer reasons to stay there. While the exit of moderates only exacerbates the disparity between the parties, it is easy to see why the sacrifice of public service is greater for some than it is for others.
