Summary
The subarachnoid space is a true space between the pia mater and the arachnoid mater (mater in Latin means “mother”). It is filled with CSF and is the site of infection in cases of meningitis, which often presents with headache, fever, and neck stiffness. Meningitis is diagnosed by lumbar puncture, also called a spinal tap.
