Summary
Dear Dave,
Have you seen the enclosed table, which appeared in ‘The Radio Times'? Perhaps it might be of use to you in deciding just what constitutes a Chamber Orchestra, a Small Orchestra, an Orchestra, a Full Orchestra and a Grand Orchestra.
Let me know when you return as I want to see you. How have you got on in the country, or haven't you? I have finished the Sonata [Violin Sonata No.1], thank God. Blessings on you for 1932. [H.F.]
[Dear Dave]
So sorry to bother you again. Is Lambert [Herbert, not Constant] a vegetarian? If he is, could you possibly give me a ring any time today: if not, don't bother. I should hate to produce a mutton cutlet if he happened to be one.
By the way, I have got all muddled up in my dates and am free this weekend: if you are still unattached let's talk about it on Wednesday. H.
[Dear Dave]
It would be worth coming to have a look at both the Willoughby Road houses; they might be possible. I think ‘To Joy’ [G.F.'s setting of Edmund Blunden's poem] is a most moving and beautiful song. H.
Dear Dave,
I was most disappointed not to be at Bournemouth on Wednesday afternoon [for G.F.'s ‘New Year Music’]. The 5.15, on which I had planned to return to London, turned out to be a Summer train only - fortunately I thought of ringing up to enquire - and the one after that would have brought me back too late for what I was doing that evening. As my wireless is still at the works I went over to the ROs and listened there. It did not come through entirely satisfactorily, for they amplified the beginning and end to such an extent that the whole work was mffrom beginning to end. However, one could imagine that and make allowances for it. Musically it sounded splendid. I like the work very much - it sounded just as I had imagined it - and think it seems absolutely satisfactory. Did you? See you next Monday 11.0 a.m. H.
