This chapter focuses on three sections in the Anthropologie Friedländer: On the Use of Reason with Regard to the Practical, On the Character of Humanity in General, and On Education. One finds that ultimately the education or cultivation of reason is intrinsic to the very realization or nature of the being of reason and speech. In order to understand this, one needs to get a clear understanding of the sense of reason and, in particular, of the sense of the use of reason that is operative in Immanuel Kant's account. The chapter discusses the science of anthropology and its subject of inquiry, the sense of reason and its use, and the resulting need and challenges for education. The distinction between the understanding and reason involves the nature of the relation to experience as well as the ability to go beyond experience.
