Summary
Commentaries on Isaiah 40–66 are an overwhelming abundance and only a selection can be included here. James Muilenburg’s commentary is a landmark in scholarship on Isaiah 40–66 and is still immensely valuable for its literary attentiveness. More recent work on Isaiah 40–55 by John Goldingay and David Payne is insightful and gives comprehensive coverage to the range of scholarship on these chapters along with detailed discussion of its own translation decisions. Joseph Blenkinsopp’s two volumes similarly provide both thoroughly engaged commentary and detailed translation discussion for Isaiah 40–55 and 56–66 respectively. Brevard Childs contributes insightful readings and occupies an important place in the move toward reading these chapters within the context of the book of Isaiah.
