This chapter explores Wales’ sustainable development journey from the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 to the groundbreaking legislation given Royal Assent in 2015 – The Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015 (FGA). This legislation places a legal duty on the Welsh public sector to maximise its contribution to sustainable development. It also establishes a Commissioner for Future Generations and a Commissioner’s Office, innovations which will hold the public sector to account on its approach to sustainable development.
