Summary
By now, dignitarian humanism in political philosophy has become closely associated with several well-entrenched theoretical assumptions which, in my view, conspire to obscure both what is compelling and what is problematic about its place in political evaluation. To begin to open a fresh angle on it, therefore, this chapter flags three assumptions, common in several currently influential genres, that this book refuses. The second half of the chapter describes and defends my own approach.
