Summary
In this essay I work with a theoretical model for writing a history of theater that I have proposed, described, and used in previous essays and books.1 My point of departure is that all theatrical practices are discursive and, as such, are mediated by the context of communication and the preferences of the speaker and the audience. To understand the meaning and the message of any text requires the consideration of the producer, his/her cultural and aesthetic preferences, the specific audience(s), and the context of the communicative act.
