Monsieur le Major, 28 Avril, 1861.

Je viens d'apprendre de mes Chrétiens que les soldats Chinois ont projeté de vous massacrer en route, demain matin, quand vous irez voir les mandarins. Prenez vos précautions. J'ai fait dire aux mandarins de la ville de faire veiller à votre conservation. Je prie M. le Major de prendre son plus bel uniforme (épée, épaulettes), outrement les Chinois se moqueraient de leur tenue. Je vous attends, M. le Major, avec MM. vos compagnons de voyage, pour diner. Je crois que ces bruits d'assassinat sont sérieux, et que vous devez prendre les précautions nécessaires pour votre sûreté personnelle.

J'apprends que les soldats Chinois veulent certainement vous massacrer et piller vos barques. Ils ont déterminés de commencer l'attaque pendant le dîner; ils veulent creuser et détruire ma maison; je crois done prudent de remettre l'invitation à demain, jusqu'a ce que les mandarins n'aient pris leurs mesures pour notre sûreté. Si vous veniez aujourd'hui, il y aurait des massacres. Je vous prie donc do vouloir m'excuser. Mon dîner est déja préparé, mais impossible de venir, il y va de la vie.
