Summary

Mental disorders represent 22% of the total burden of disease in Latin America and the Caribbean. This chapter presents a set of indicators on the status of mental health systems in six Central American countries and the Dominican Republic. The World Health Organization (WHO) Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (WHO-AIMS) consists of a tool and methodology developed by the WHO for collecting essential data about the mental health programs and services of a country. WHO-AIMS facilitates the evaluation of weaknesses in the mental health system and clarifies how to make the needed reforms. The evaluation process can promote reflection among decision makers and government officials. Psychotropic medicines are practically inaccessible to people with low income levels. The mental health care model is still predominantly institutional, centered on psychiatric or mental hospitals. There are positive experiences in Central America that may be used as examples to follow in this field.
