Summary
The ancient Greek writings ascribed to Hippocrates criticised the traditional understanding and description of epilepsy as a form of supernatural possession and insisted it was a physical problem located in the brain. In the late nineteenth century the mind doctors were still hoping for the anatomical and physiological explanations and remedies that their more medical brethren had achieved.
