Summary

In the wake of the Global Financial Crisis, a number of factors have helped to put monetary refom on the public agenda. The crisis put monetary institutions in the spotlight. Crisis management of central banks inspired ideas for going even further, while also nurturing doubts about its effectiveness, given its costs being much more visible than its merits. When the inner life of money, finance and the economy was put on public display during the crisis, observers found it hard to inegrate with prevailing views on how money is supposed to work. The resulting surprise and confusion was intensified by the politics of the crisis, disappointing expectations of adequate burden sharing, retribution and radical change. The call for monetary reform comes from very different perspectives. The proposals with the greatest public visibility are Bitcoin, Regional Money, Sovereign Money and Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). A typological framework is offered to categorize them.
