Summary
Spirit for heidegger denotes our capacity as humans to understand being and inquire about the sense of being. The German word for spirit, Geist, can also be translated into English as “mind,” and is a term of art for a number of prominent German thinkers, including Hegel, Schelling, Hölderlin, and Husserl.
