Summary

The characters in the Homeric poems perform various ritual acts (sacrifice, prayer), which would have been familiar to Homer’s audience. But the epics also reveal an intimacy between gods and mortals through divine interventions and interactions that belong to a bygone heroic age. Nevertheless, the poems are deeply engaged with issues of the nature of the gods and the human condition and these views had a profound impact on subsequent Greek thought.
