Summary
N.B. This conversation book was used chronologically in the following order: Blätter 25r–57v; Blätter 1r–24v. It seems to follow directly after Heft 22, probably late afternoon of Thursday, February 6.
[Blatt 25r]
BEETHOVEN [writing so as not to be overheard, possibly in a coffee house on the Spittelberg; probably late afternoon of Thursday, February 6]: Were you at Gallenberg’s? //
SCHINDLER [continuing; probably late afternoon of Thursday, February 6]:
Aren't you closely acquainted with Spohr; he is in Cassel at the Elector's Court. //
The students are suffering a rough blow, because it was decreed that, from here on, there is to be only one examination per year, where now there were 2. Very sad, in that many [Blatt 25v] will have to stop, because their intellectual powers do not allow such an extraordinary temptation. // But everyone among them suffers, the good as well as the weak-headed. //
I was at Bach's in the morning; he is already out of bed today. //
Don't you remember the flutist Keller? He is chamber virtuoso at Prince von Fürstenberg’s. [//] [Blatt 26r] Prince von Fürstenberg is one of those who still has a splendid Kapelle, a beautiful theater, and does a great deal for Art. // Keller is a very intimate friend of mine; he is now opera director and stage director, and favorite of the prince, all rolled up into one—that much is certain. [//] [Blatt 26v] I’ll write to him today and therefore send a note to the prince. He will do his part. //
You know the poet Fürst, though; he is from Copenhagen and is writing to his friends at Court on behalf of the Mass [Missa solemnis]. //
What do you think of Wähner, then? [//] [Blatt 27r] What do they have, two together[?] I heard something concerning Herr von Janus. // A calm, unassuming man. // I often meet him in the coffee house Zur Krone [Crown] on the Graben. //
I shall now affix a seal to a dispatch. [//] [Blatt 27v] At the Three Lions. // Sold, I hear—unter den Tuchlauben. //
