Popular resorts, and how to reach them. Combining a brief description of the principal summer retreats in the United States, and the routes of travel leading to them … Illustrated by one hundred wood-cuts by the best engravers, many of them from original sketches by John B. Bachelder. Boston: John B. Bachelder, publisher, 1874.
viii, 9-192 p. : ill., maps ; 21 cm.Second edition. In assisting his readers to select sites and routes congenial to their tastes in traveling, Bachelder does not neglect to inform them of the merits of climate or the mineral springs to be found in many locales. Most of the book is arranged not by region per se, but by the railroads that serve these regions. For example, a traveler planning a visit Portland would consult the section devoted to the routes of the Boston & Maine Railroad; those wishing to enjoy the White Sulphur Springs in Pennsylvania would consult pages devoted to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, etc. A table of contents and an index of place names assist the reader.
