Translator's note
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 10 November 2010
Summary
For the English translation the original form of the book, written from a general viewpoint without musical examples, has been followed, but notes have been added to provide details of sources. I am most grateful to the author for supplying much of this information. I would also like to thank Professor Philip Yarrow for providing the translations of Readings 2 and 9 and Elizabeth Skinner for that of parts of Reading 11, Hugh Shankland for his invaluable advice on linguistic problems, and Ian Rumbold for suggesting countless ways of correcting and improving the text.
