Summary
Introduction
KinaUganda means ‘of Ugandan origin’. It refers to that which is typically Uganda: bearing indigenous cultural characteristics and articulating a Ugandan point of view. It is the prefix kina- (of), that invokes the question of cultural identity in the word and expresses the meaning of home movies. Conversely, EkiNigeriya is its opposite in that it describes Nollywood home movies in Uganda. The genre rejects the old binary ideologies that divided theatre between indigenous and Western, local languages and English, to create hierarchies of audiences and complexities in its reception. It has emerged as a performance space, benefiting from the peace and economic growth of National Resistance Movement's government, and in addition, displacing theatre as a critical form of cultural entertainment. In this space, Ugandans re-examine perceptions of katemba (theatre/performance) as they strive to reconceptualise their traditional understanding of performance and communal entertainment. For this paper, I transcribed and translated interviews with two home movie directors, Mariam Ndagire, working in English, and Ashraf Simwogerere, working in Luganda and other Bantu languages.
A Conversation with Mariam Ndagire
Filmography
Down This Road I Walk (2007)
Strength of a Stranger (2008)
Hearts in Pieces (2009)
Tendo Sisters (2010)
Mariam Ndagire has been producing films since Down This Road I Walk (2007). For this study, I wanted to write about her career up to date. In particular, I wanted to hear her story in relation to other developments in the home movie industry.
